Gospel (Luke 24:13-35)

Now that very day two of them weregoing to a village seven miles fromJerusalem called Emmaus, and theywere conversing about all the things thathad occurred. And it happened thatwhile they were conversing anddebating, Jesus himself drew near andwalked with them, but their eyes wereprevented from recognizing him. Heasked them, "What are you discussingas you walk along?" They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, namedCleopas, said to him in reply, "Are youthe only visitor to Jerusalem who doesnot know of the things that have takenplace there in these days?" And hereplied to them, "What sort of things?"They said to him, "The things thathappened to Jesus the Nazarene, whowas a prophet mighty in deed and wordbefore God and all the people, how ourchief priests and rulers both handed himover to a sentence of death andcrucified him. But we were hoping thathe would be the one to redeem Israel;and besides all this, it is now the thirdday since this took place. Some womenfrom our group, however, haveastounded us: they were at the tombearly in the morning and did not find hisbody; they came back and reported thatthey had indeed seen a vision of angelswho announced that he was alive. Thensome of those with us went to the tomband found things just as the women haddescribed, but him they did not see."And he said to them, "Oh, how foolishyou are! How slow of heart to believe allthat the prophets spoke! Was it notnecessary that the Messiah shouldsuffer these things and enter into hisglory?" Then beginning with Moses andall the prophets, he interpreted to themwhat referred to him in all the scriptures. As they approached the village to whichthey were going, he gave the impressionthat he was going on farther. But theyurged him, "Stay with us, for it is nearlyevening and the day is almost over." Sohe went in to stay with them. And ithappened that, while he was with themat table, he took bread, said theblessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and

they recognized him, but he vanishedfrom their sight. Then they said to eachother, "Were not our hearts burning(within us) while he spoke to us on theway and opened the scriptures to us?"So they set out at once and returned toJerusalem where they found gatheredtogether the eleven and those with themwho were saying, "The Lord has trulybeen raised and has appeared toSimon!" Then the two recounted whathad taken place on the way and how hewas made known to them in thebreaking of the bread.

This is the truth. Peace be with you.

A reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy (2,8-13)Your blessing father,

Brothers and sisters,

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is mygospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the wordof God is not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who arechosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together witheternal glory. This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live withhim; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. If weare unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

Praise be to God always.
