Hi my name is Dee Dee Dug-stad. I am the Infant Toddler Specialist at the Early Child-

hood Training Network. My job is to train child care providers and parents on the development, care and envi-ronments that infants and toddlers need to grow up healthy. CPR and First Aid are important classes that I teach to the community also.

My husband’s name is Jeff and we have 7 children and one on the way. Wes, Adrienne, John, Jenna, Justee, Javin and Ava are their names. Life is always exciting at our house.

I love being outdoors… fishing, boating, snorkeling, swimming, and playing at the river are some of my favorite things to do. I like to play softball and volleyball too.

Observation and Documentation as the Foundation

of Relationship Based Care.

This series will help you see the image of the child, the teacher & the family a little differently. You will learn to re-think the curriculum you

use with children based on the observations you see daily. You will see the child as an individual & see each with their own set of skills & knowledge at their own level of development. You will learn to provide a responsive environment using open-ended materials. You will be asked to look into the natural world for inspiration and explore children’s rights as a member of their community. This class will get you excited about your role as a teacher, facilitator, and caregiver.

For those of you who have been to many of the trainings offered by the Early Childhood Training Network we would like to kick it up a notch. We are proud to be offering some

new and exciting training that will help you take the next step up that ladder to professionalism. Keep your eye open for these trainings. These series classes will also have a Continued Education Unit offered with them. Call The Right Turn, Inc if you and your staff are interested in setting up an in house training at your facility. Spring Fever??Spring Fever??Spring Fever??Spring Fever?? Spring is around the corner, and time to clean

out!! When you are cleaning your car seat, make sure to check the expiration date on the seat.

Seats expire after 5 to 6 years depending on the manufacturer.

When washing your seat, make sure to read the directions for that seat for proper cleaning. Not all covers can be washed in the washer or dried in the dryer. Covers are made with fire retardant materials and washing them improperly may damage them. Also, do not iron

the straps— they will melt!!

If you have taken your seat apart for cleaning and can’t get it back

together, please contact me and I would be happy to help!!

Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Training Institute targets professionals, parents

Fostering children’s mental health is as important to overall well-being as shelter, nutritious food and health care. That has prompted South Dakota Voices for Children’s work in the field of children’s mental health, which continues with a training institute designed for all professionals who work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families.

South Dakota Voices for Children’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Training Institute is set for Wednesday, May 6 and Thursday, May 7 at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel & Convention Center, Pierre. Reservations are limited to 100 participants.

Faculty for the institute includes Gerald Costa, Ph.D., founding director of the YCS Institute, which operates New Jersey’s only licensed, Medicaid-approved mental health clinic specializing in children birth to 6 and their families. A developmental psychologist, he has a special interest in relationship-based approaches to autistic-spectrum disorders. He has been a consultant to the ZERO TO THREE and Early Head Start National Resource Center, serving as a national consultant to the Pathways to Prevention project infant mental health initiative.

He will be joined by Lorri Sullivan, M.Ed., YCS Institute Associate Director for Training and Consultation. A former director of child development services for the Early Head Start and Head Start programs, she also serves as project director for the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at the YCS Institute.

The institute is designed for mental health clinicians, home visitors, early childhood educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, family practice physicians, pediatricians, policymakers and parents. Continuing education/professional training hours are pending for counselors, social workers, early childhood educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, family practice physicians and pediatricians.

The registration fee of $35 per day includes lunch. The registration deadline is April 22, 2009. Complete information about the institute is available at sdkidsmentalhealth.org and at sdvoicesforchildren.org.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. The theme of Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is "Bring Communities Together for Children— Children Bring Communities Together" and it's time to start planning your WOYC 2009 events.

Some ideas from previous years include neighborhood parades, family fun fairs, art displays, and collaborations with local organizations and businesses. For more inspiration, please visit the website at http://www.naeyc.org/about/woyc/
