CONTENTS
Welcome to the Rose and our latest season of theatre, music, comedy, dance, opera and more.
I would especially like to draw your attention to the three Rose Productions featured in this brochure - Hetty Feather, Translations and Single Spies – offering family entertainment, drama and comedy, all chosen to appeal directly to our local audience. Of course their authors – Jacqueline Wilson (adapted by Emma Reeves), Brian Friel and Alan Bennett – are among the greatest working in the English language.
The Rose is now attracting world class touring work too. Having recently hosted both the RSC and Propeller, we’re delighted that Shakespeare’s Globe is starting its national tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with us. This is affirmation that we are an integral part of the UK’s drama scene.
We’re also delighted to welcome Northern Broadsides, Barrie Rutter’s fine and ever-popular touring company, back to the Rose, this time with two productions – An August Bank Holiday Lark and She Stoops to Conquer. And brilliant comedy is represented by The Play That Goes Wrong, a sell-out hit both in the West End and at the Edinburgh Festival.
When choosing from this rich and varied programme, please remember the Season Saver, designed to help you save pounds when you book for more than one production - and many pounds if you book as many as six (see p38).
The Rose aims to be at the heart of the local community, a commitment celebrated by our own Take Part programme (see the pages to the left) as well as the Let Me In Festival, Creative Youth’s International Youth Arts Festival and the Festival of Stories. See p27–28 for details of how these strands of work open doors to those with learning disabilities and offer great opportunities to thousands of young people.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Rose and another season of world class theatre on your doorstep.
Robert O’Dowd Chief Executive
HELLO
Roll up and join Hetty on her escape from the Foundling Hospital. Tremble as she faces Matron Stinking Bottomly. Thrill as she discovers the squirrel house and Tanglefields Travelling Circus. Gasp as she endures a night locked in the attic. Quake as she braves the scary streets of Victorian London and cheer as she overcomes all in her search to find her real mother and a true family of her own.
From best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson, the tale of plucky Hetty Feather is brought thrillingly to life on stage for the Rose Theatre by award-winning script writer Emma Reeves (CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker) and the Olivier Award nominated director Sally Cookson, whose many five star productions include Peter Pan, Bearhunt, Stick Man and, most recently, Jane Eyre.
With live music, circus skills and a huge heart, Hetty Feather is a terrific adventure story – the perfect Easter treat for the whole family.

A play about a clash of cultures and a love that dares to cross the border.
1833. Rural Ireland. The British Army arrives to translate Gaelic place names into the King’s English. Farm girl Máire finds herself torn between the affections of the local school teacher and the love of a British soldier, between her native tongue and a new language, between the comfort of the world she knows and the excitement of foreign possibilities.
The resulting clash of cultures strikes at the heart of the community as they struggle to interpret a new language, and each other. What gets lost in translation?

Join Shakespeare’s famous lovers as they take refuge in the woods and wander into the midst of a dispute between the king and queen of the fairies.
Shakespeare put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface.
Created by the Globe Theatre in 2013, this ‘gripping’ (The Daily Telegraph) production comes to the Rose for just three days in September before embarking on a national tour. Renowned as 'the leading place to celebrate our greatest playwright', (The Guardian) the Globe brings its unique performance style to Shakespeare’s most loved comedy.
This production will employ Renaissance costumes and staging.

The award-winning double bill - An Englishman Abroad and A Question of Attribution
Alan Bennett takes a wry, poignant look at the comprised situation of the ‘Cambridge spies’ and the shadows lying behind even the most familiar facades.
An Englishman Abroad is the touching story of actress Coral Browne’s chance encounter with disgraced spy Guy Burgess in a Moscow theatre. Invited to dine at his flat, she receives just one simple instruction - ‘bring a tape measure’.
A Question of Attribution follows Anthony Blunt, esteemed art historian and Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures. As he tries to solve the riddle of an enigmatic painting, Blunt finds himself the subject of a more official investigation by MI5. Will he be exposed for what would later be revealed to the world - that the man who worked in the heart of the Royal Household was also a Soviet spy?
Alan Bennett’s plays include The History Boys and The Madness of George III.
