Dear Friends,

Our Greatest Week!

We begin the most solemn week of the liturgical year. In it we witness the total self-giving of Jesus. Saint Paul describes it as ‘self-emptying’ by which Jesus made himself entirely receptive to the divine will. “He emptied himself taking the form of a slave”. Paul goes on to affirm the total vindication of Jesus. “God highly exalted him and gave him the name above all others.”

Our liturgy this week invites us to follow Jesus every step of the way, beginning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. There he was applauded, welcomed and acclaimed by a crowd of well-wishers.

And Thursday we will join him at the table to receive the gift of himself in the form of the Eucharistic bread and wine. After dining with him, we will in our reflections, go with him along the trail from the upper room to the garden of olives. There we will see him struggling with fear and anxiety about the cruel death that awaits Him.

On Good Friday we will be standing in spirit beside his mother at the foot of the cross, while he hands his spirit back to the Father who sent him.

And Saturday we will be quiet and silent around his tomb, as we remember the injustices and cruelty of humanity for which he died. Late on Saturday we will move from the darkness of our passion journey to the place of the great Easter fire. There we will join the procession of the Paschal candle, representing the risen Christ, as he lights the darkness of our church and lives.

The pain of our compassion with Jesus at Calvary will give way to the hope and joy of Easter! Jesus is not dead and gone. No, He is risen, strong and powerful, alive in himself and alive in us. Then we can hold in our hearts the assuring words of Juliana of Norwich in her vision of Christ crucified. From his own lips, she heard this promise: ‘all will be well, all will be well, all manner of things will be well. ‘ (Taken from the Association of Catholic priests)

HOLY THURSDAY ADORATION

On Holy Thursday, we will again have the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following the 7:30 PM Mass until midnight. By doing this, we fulfill the command of Our Lord to keep watch with him on the eve of his passion. Please consider committing some time to pray with our community in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament before Good Friday.

HOLY THURSDAY BUS PILGRIMAGE

Also on Holy Thursday, following the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Saint John Berchmans will continue the beautiful tradition of visiting the Blessed Sacrament in seven churches around Chicago. Transportation will be provided, so reserve your spot on the bus by signing up in the vestibule. Suggested donation is $5, payable on the bus.

BLESSING OF THE EASTER FOODS/ EASTER EGG HUNT

Please join us at 12 noon on Holy Saturday, April 20th for the traditional blessing of the Easter Food. All are welcome to bring their Easter meal for a special blessing.

St. John Berchmans Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Easter Sunday immediately following the 9:45am & 11:30am Masses. Come out after Mass and join us in the courtyard. Parents, please be mindful that many small children participate in this event. This is the perfect opportunity to share a lesson in Christian charity with your children, by asking the older ones to help the little ones. This way it will be enjoyable for all.

Queridos Amigos,

!Nuestra semana más especial!

Comenzamos la más solemne semana del año litúrgico. En ella presenciamos la entrega total de Jesús. San Pablo lo describe como una “entrega total” por la cual Jesús se volvió totalmente receptivo a la divina voluntad. “Se anonadó a sí mismo tomando la condición de siervo “. Pablo continúa afirmando la vindicación total de Jesús. “Dios lo exaltó sobre todas las cosas y le otorgó el nombre que está sobre todo nombre”.

Nuestra liturgia esta semana nos invita a seguir a Jesús en cada paso del camino, comenzando con su entrada triunfal en Jerusalén. Allí fue aplaudido, bienvenido y aclamado por una multitud de seguidores.

Y el jueves nos reuniremos con él en la mesa para recibirlo como el don de sí mismo en forma de pan y vino eucarísticos. Después de cenar con él, en nuestras reflexiones, iremos con él por el sendero desde la habitación superior hasta el huerto de los olivos. Allí lo veremos luchando contra el miedo y la ansiedad por la cruel muerte que le espera.

El Viernes Santo estaremos parados en espíritu junto a su madre al pie de la cruz, mientras Él le devuelve su espíritu al Padre que lo envió.

Y el sábado permaneceremos callados y silenciosos alrededor de su tumba, recordando las injusticias y la crueldad de la humanidad por la cual Él murió. Al atardecer del sábado nos trasladaremos de la oscuridad de nuestra jornada de la pasión al lugar del gran fuego de Pascua. Allí nos uniremos a la procesión de la vela pascual, que representa a Cristo resucitado, mientras se enciende, Él desaparece la oscuridad de nuestra iglesia y vive.

¡El dolor de nuestra compasión con Jesús en el Calvario dará lugar a la esperanza y alegría de la Pascua! Jesús no está muerto y no se ha ido. No, Él ha resucitado, fuerte y poderoso, vivo en sí mismo y vivo en nosotros. Luego podremos tener en nuestros corazones las palabras de Juliana de Norwich en su visión de Cristo crucificado. School NewsMarch at SJB

In March St. John Berchmans School partnered up with Big City Readers. Our students participated in “March Mad Minutes,” a two week reading contest for Read Across America. At SJB we know reading everyday is so important to our children’s education. In this challenge our students received a reading log, picked up a book and read at school, at home and at local business sponsors around the neighborhood. Our kids were excited to READ, READ, READ! The grand total time spent reading by our SJB students was a whopping 105,000 minutes!! Great job, Eagles, and thanks to Ms Beth for organizing such a fun event for our students.

En marzo, la escuela San Juan Berchmans se asoció con Big City Readers. Nuestros estudiantes participaron en “March Mad Minutes”, un concurso de lectura de dos semanas para Read Across America. En SJB sabemos que leer todos los días es muy importante para la educación de nuestros hijos. BERCHMANS! This seminar will provide you with an all-inclusive and comprehensive appreciation and knowledge of the Vocation and Sacrament of Matrimony. Our goal is to present both the theology and practical “tools” of Christian Marriage so that you will come to a deeper understanding of how marriage is a participation in life together here on earth.

The sessions for Spring 2019 will take place on the following dates. Couples are expected to attend all four sessions in order to fulfill the PreCana requirement:
