April 2005 April Section Event UCI Central Plants Tour The UCI Central Plant staff with conduct a tour of the facility at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 16th. The tour itself will last approxi- mately 2 hours in duration or longer if the group wishes to discuss further. The Central Plant is the heart of the utility infrastructure of the Campus. From a central location we provide chilled water, high tempera- ture hot water (High Temp), compressed air, and 24-hour monitoring and control of the campus utility systems. These systems are used to for environmental conditioning and research support in over 3.5 million square feet of usable space. High Temp is generated by two heat exchangers. The exchangers installed in 1996 replaced the original direct contact heat exchanger that had served the campus since 1964. The two heat exchangers have a com- bined capacity of greater than 100,000,000 Btu/ hour. Chilled Water is generated by five large centrifugal chillers. Four of the chillers are electrically driven. One is driven by steam turbine. Together, they have a combined nominal capacity of 8500 tons. For more information about the university’s centrally located utility please see www .fm.uci.edu. Access to ISA standardsWhen you ask an ISA member their

reasons for being a member, each one willhave their unique list. But somewhere onthat list will be “Access to ISA Standards”.Have you ever wondered what an ISAstandard is and what goes in its develop-ment and implementation? Let meindulge….

Established in 1945, ISA has been astandards writing organization, developingconsensus standards for manufacturing andcontrol systems security, factory automa-tion, power plants, computer technology, communication and more. ISAis accredited by ANSI- American National Standards Institute. There aremore that 150 standards currently published and practiced around theworld. Many governmental agencies have also endorsed or adopted ISAstandards.

As we know, ISA is a volunteer organization; hence, the standardsare also developed by volunteer committees. There are currently over2000 volunteers involved in various committees helping develop thestandards of the future. If you attend ISA’s national conference andexhibits, you will see the committees at work. Most of them meet severaltimes a year via teleconference and typically one face-to-face meetingduring the ISA conference. Each of the committees has different goalsbut following underlying commonality --

• Promote safety, environmental issues, and technical excellencethrough standards

• Cover symbols, definitions, process measurement and control, signal transmission, and industry-specific applications providepractical guidance to engineers, designers, and technicians, enabling them to meet the mandates of increased competition andto work better, faster, and more economically

• The standards should be of global nature so that it can beimplemented and adopted through out the world

ISA has over 20 divisions that support committees in their areas ofexpertise. Over the years the standards committees have helped indeveloping ISA training and assisted in developing ISA conferences. Some of the recent ISA standards have involved multiple divisions to tapthe skills and backgrounds of individual necessary to search and writesuch standards.

You think you are ready to contribute or you think there is anopportunity to create a standard? One can start by contacting a divisionvice president and setting up a survey committee to explore the need fora standard. Survey committees can be formed to research related work inthe industry, to establish the need for a standard, to identify committeemembers, and then, based on the results of their study, to recommend ascope and a purpose to the ISA’s Standards and Practices Board.

As an ISA member you have access to the ISA standards forviewing for annual fees of $25. Printed copies of ISA standards can beordered from ISA. Let me know if you want to participate or see a need.I can certainly facilitate.

Standards and Practices

New committee to focuson wireless technology

Research Triangle Park, NC (17 February 2005) - A new ISA standards committee, ISA-SP100, has been established to create standards, recommended practices, and/or technical reports to define procedures for implementing wireless systems in the automation and control environmentat the field level. Committee Chair Wayne Manges of Oak Ridge National Laboratory expects their work to “assure the confidence in and integrityof wireless technology, and provide criteria for implementing it in manufacturing automation and control systems.” Technology covered will include:

* Field sensors used for monitoring, control, alarm, and shutdown. * Wireless technology whose uses include real time field-to-businesssystems. * Fluid processing, material processing, and discrete parts manufacturing.

The committee will address various aspects of wireless manufacturing and control systems technology, including the environment in which it isdeployed, the technology life cycle, and applications. According to Manges, the new standards will “assure successful system deployment, help

identify and address any vulnerabilities, andimprove overall system performance byeliminating failure modes.”

ISA recognizes that in order to exploitemerging wireless opportunities to improveindustrial systems, collaboration amongvendors, R&D communities, and end users isessential.

Committee members include:3e Technologies International Inc.,Adaptive Instruments Corp., ApprionInc., BP America Inc., CMC Associ-ates, Emerson Process Management,Endress+Hauser, ExxonmobilResearch & Engineering, Honeywell,Invensys I/A, Medida Inc., MotorolaLabs, Oak Ridge National Laboratory,Oceana Sensor, Omnex ControlSystems Inc., OPTI Canada Inc.,Shell, and Syncrude Canada Ltd.

The cooperation of this diverse group willalso assure that components are available toprovide for successful deployment.

ISA is globally recognized as a standardswriting organization, developing consensusstandards for automation, security, safety, batch control, control valves, fieldbus, environmental conditions, measurement, andsymbols. Accredited by the American NationalStandards Institute (ANSI), ISA has publishedmore than 135 standards, recommendedpractices, and technical reports, through thededicated efforts of a network of industryexperts.

previously thought possible with calorimetric technology. The traditional calorimetric technology utilizes two PTC Ther-

mistors, one of which is heated a predetermined amount above the other, which monitors the medium temperature. Flow of the medium conductsheat away from the sensor probe and the corresponding change in theheated Thermistor’s resistance value is then amplified, linearized andconverted into an output (switching or analog depending upon sensortype) proportional to the rate of flow.

The fact thatcalorimetric sensorsdo not require themedium to beelectricallyconductive (aswould a mag meterfor example) makesmeasurements ofpolymers, oil, grease, andnumerous othermediums possible. The technology also is not based upon suspended particles for measure-ment accuracy (as would be the case with doppler type meters). Theaddition of optional specialty metals for use in the calorimetric construc-tion (such as Hastelloy, Monel, Titanium etc.) allows measurements ofinnumerable aggressive medium such as chemicals and acids.

North Hills, Calif — Moore Industries-International, Inc., a worldleader in interface instruments for industrial process control, systemintegration, and factory automation has earned the San Fernando ValleyEngineers’ Council Distinguished Engineering Project AchievementAward for exceptional commitment to safety and successful completionof IEC 61508 Certification.

The Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Awardrecognizes organizations that have completed engineering projects which, because of their scope or unique character, are outstanding and deservingof merit. Joseph Hage, vice president of engineering and MooreIndustries’ IEC 61508 Safety Team leader accepted this award on behalfof the team at the Engineers’ Council 50th Anniversary NationalEngineers Week Honors & Awards Banquet on February 26, 2005 at theSportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, Calif.

IEC 61508 is a process based standard that applies to the entire lifecycle of a product, from conception and design stages, through itsmanufacturing, application, maintenance, and ultimately final decommis-sioning. Moore Industries is the first US company to successfully obtainIEC 61508 certification to design and manufacture process instrumenta-tion hardware for safety related applications and has used this achieve-ment as a driving force to educate industry leaders, government bodies, manufacturers, end users, system integrators and other entities on theimportance of safety. In addition, Moore Industries is a founding memberof an IEC 61508 consortium in Europe.

by Larry Flanagan, weber SensorsIn the $3 billion dollar world market of flow metering, a little

known jewel is gradually finding its way to acclaim, the calorimetricflow sensor. Pioneered by weber Sensors’ founder, Mr. Gunther Weber, the use of the calorimetric principle in flow is now a standard in theindustry. Significant advances over the past decade have enabled thecalorimetric sensor to assume a very active and respected role in flowswitching and flow metering of both liquids and gaseous mediums.

The most common use of these sensors is in flow-no flow applica-tions for detecting the movement of air or liquids. Popular for their solidstate construction with no moving parts, the calorimetric flow sensor isimpervious to particulate matter that spells doom for mechanical typedevices.

Historically, the calorimetric switching devices have been costly incomparison to mechanical switches, but with new technological break-throughs in both electronic and mechanical construction, there are, nowavailable, units that compete directly with their primitive counterparts.

Flow metering has also become a substantive part of the calorimetricsensor’s function. The sensing technology, having no moving parts,

allows measurement of flows so low asto be below the inertia threshold ofturbine or paddlewheel sensors. This hasmade them very popular for chemicaldosing, leak detection, etc. Also, extended range calorimetric sensors arenow available that can enable measure-ments of much higher flow rates (up to60 feet per second for some liquids) than

Wireless Technologies in Industrial ApplicationsThe ease in deploying wireless technologies in our offices and

homes has contributed to massive growth on a global basis that is notexpected to slow down any time soon. Applying and installing wirelessproducts in industrial environments, though, requires a little morethought and planning. The trick is determining which technology ‘bestfits’ a specific application requirement. This presentation will reviewthe available technologies, current application successes, and futuretechnology directions. We will compare proprietary spread spectrum, the emerging 802.xx standards, and other long standing technologyimplementations.

Ethernet Basics & Considerations for the Plant FloorEthernet has long been used as the de-facto network solution for

front office environments all over the world. Its acceptance and popular-ity have slowly found its way to the plant floor and factory automationenvironments. Although considered a total solution, Ethernet is merely asmall part of the overall network solution. This presentation will covernot only the physical components used with Ethernet but will look at theprotocols that run over Ethernet and give you a broad perspective aboutwhat you should consider before implementing Ethernet at the plant floorlevel. Ethernet, when applied properly, can be a very efficient andpowerful solution for process control and data acquisition.Industries-International, Inc.

Field Buses and the Controls TechnicianBus technologies are now commonly specified for new projects and

it is likely that the controls technicians will have to maintain both thedevices on the bus and the bus infrastructure itself. The presenters willprovide an overview of the more common buses and the most commonapplications for each. They will address troubleshooting techniques, configuration and diagnostic tools and best practices for maintaining boththe bus infrastructure and the instruments, valves and I/O that areroutinely connected to the buses.

Reviewed by Nick Sands, [email protected] book, by Raytheon project engineer and manager Michael Whitt, covers the basics

of instrumentation and control (I&C) design for projects in a way unlike any other. Only atruly experienced project leader could reveal the secrets that Whitt shares. Even after a halfdozen major DCS projects, I found new insights in Successful Instrumentation and ControlSystems Design. If you want to excel in I&C project work, this is a must read.

The book, like many projects, is divided into three parts, each more detailed than the onebefore. The first part gives an overview of the project process. In the second part, Whitt sharesdesign basics, from background information to good design practices for instrumentation andcontrol systems. Part three is about execution of design. Using an example problem, Whittcompletes the engineering documentation for the project, highlighting the connections to goodproject management and good design covered in the earlier chapters.

Projects 101 is the first part, giving an overview of the organization and process of aproject. Whitt explains the different types of projects and why the old adage is true: a projectcan meet any two of three objectives; cheap, good, or fast. Project structure, flow, and deliver-ables are outlined. The roles and the responsibilities for the team are defined.

The basics of project management, scope, estimate, and schedule, are discussed, along withwhy they are important to the project.

Design 101 is the second part, giving many practical tips. Whitt starts with some back-ground on ranges and scaling, then covers wiring practices, with some good information on elec-trical classification. A whole chapter is dedicated to control systems, including background onPLCs, typical system functionality, I/O count and arrangement, networking, and HMIs.

While this is a very good section there is no comment about ensuring the right upstreamand downstream diameters for flowmeters.

Documentation 101 is the third part, using an example to apply the design practices in PartII and the management practices in part I. These chapters are full of the design documents gener-ated as instruments are added, cables and conduits are selected and sized, I/O blocks are speci-fied, and construction design package is assembled. Whitt uses the project tools to coordinateinformation and generate estimates and bill of materials. Its clearly a project design book sinceconstruction, checkout and startup are covered in less than three pages at the very end.

Whitt filled a void in the library of control books by writing Successful Instrumentation andControl Systems Design. Too often designers, engineers, and project managers learn good projectpractices the hard way, by first doing it wrong. Whitt shows the project as a product in itself, and how the many parts are connected. Even project management is critical to the success of aproject despite what you may read about project managers (see G K McMillan’s early books). There is an optional CD of project tools. This is a book definitely worth buying , and it’s avail-able from ISA for $79 (member price) or with the toolkit CD for $89.

The calorimetric sensor’s minimalpower requirements have enabled thedevelopment of battery operated flowsensors for remote locations. These canbe paired with wireless transmissiondevices to enable internet based monitor-ing or dial up fault alarming for such applications as loss of flow topumps, leaking of pipes, and loss of lubrication oil or coolant flow.

Microflow technology in calorimetric sensors has also enabledheretofore unrealizable low flow metering of less than 2 milliters perhour of liquid flow.

In summary, the calorimetric flow sensor is the rising star of theflow sensing industry and offers capabilities unmatched by other flowmeasurement technologies.

Calorimetric, continued from page 7Training course descriptions, continued from page 12other inert gases, a method of detecting hydrocarbons in the parts perbillion range is needed. One method will be presented which uses apacked gas chromatograph column to separate aromatics in conjunctionwith a flame ionization detector to obtain 0-100ppb full-scale sensitivity. The ability of the analyzer to detect aromatics such as benzene and totalhydrocarbons in one analyzer is expected to offer significant advantagesover the use of two separate analyzers, one for aromatics and the otherfor THC. The details of one analyzer will be presented as a microproces-sor-based instrument used in the on-line measurement of gases. Thepiping schematic, column and the detector and results showing the spanand zero stability, response time, linearity, low detectability limit will bepresented.
