HOP, HOP EASTER BUNNY

By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

Hop, hop Easter Bunny. Hop on down to my house. My basket is sitting empty so fill it if you will. I would like a hollow chocolate bunny and lots of old-fashioned, plain jelly beans, and a few brightly col-ored dyed eggs.

Does the Easter Bunny come to your house? Bunny has skipped ours for many years now, ever since I reamed out the six foot white bunny that was blocking our driveway prior to our subdivision’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. But one year, he made the biggest surprise visit of all. It was the year after we moved from Camden County to Marietta.

Following years of owning/publish-ing a weekly newspaper with no time for a long vacation, we decided it was time for a really good family trip. Peter and Katie were in their early elementary school years and the week-long Spring Break was just the time we needed. The break fell just the way it does this year, beginning with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter.

We enjoyed an amazing week in Hawaii, doing all the tourist things on Oahu and the Big Island. We played in the Pacific, took in the Hawaiian Cultural Center, the Dole Pineapple Plant, and the USS Arizona Memorial. On the Big Island of Hawaii, we visited the volcano park, and drove the entire island – from beaches, to villages, to ranches.

We arrived back in Marietta early Easter morning. And lo and behold, the Easter Bunny had left two magic baskets of goodies on the dining room table. How had the Bunny come when no one had been in the house while we were away: we all left at the same time; and arrived at the same time?

That’s the magic of the Easter Bunny. He can excite and surprise children with simple gifts. A few weeks ago, on a short trip to Charlotte to hug granddaughter Addie, the stuffed bunny from that magical basket went along and stayed behind for a new generation of Easter gifts.

This secular symbol of our most Holy Christian holiday perhaps makes no sense. But it is, for some of us, a tradition that began in our own childhood. We brought

it forward for our children and now wait to see if, like the dying of the eggs, will continue as a tradition. So hop, hop Easter Bunny. Will you bring us all some special treats?

JACKSON STARSWITH SYMPHONY

Cobe Jackson will be starring as young Farkle McBride, a musical genius, in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theatre production of “The Remarkable Farkle McBride.” Jackson is the son of Zanethia Eubanks of Ma-bleton. He is a 6th grader at Lindley 6th Grade Academy. John Lithgow, Star of 3rd Rock from the Sun, pens a comical verse story about a prodigy whose quest for the perfect instrument leads him through virtually every section of the orchestra. After his debut, the easily dis-satisfied diminutive genius trades in his fiddle for a flute, then a trombone and subsequently percussion, all to no avail. Not until he steps in for an ill conduc-tor does he finds his niche. The show will be at Woodruff Arts Center, April 29, at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20.
