The second part of the evening was held in theschool gym. Acts included vocal trios, musical skits, musicwith sign language, a hand clap routine, a silent comedyskit, piano, guitar, cello, violin, vocal solo, an actionvideo, and more. “The Chosen” video with Josh (NAS)was voted Most Unique, and Best Performance was themusic with sign language by Heather (NAS). The AudienceFavorite was “Statue in the Park,” a silent comedy skit byLuis Leonor, Doug Taylor, and Jamie Bennett (picturedright, by Don Hales).

A big thank you to all of the participants! All of your

hard work and efforts were very much appreciated.

True Freedom

Freedom’s cost has been great. Think of the millionswho have died in wars for the cherished freedom in theircountry. Think of the total desire for nothing more or lessthan freedom when enslaved. Recall the incrediblemoment when the Israelite slaves’ first born children wereuntouched when the Angel of the Lord passed over Egypt, and the Egyptians thrust them out with much wealth.Imagine that taste of freedom, true freedom from slavery for more than 400 years! Howlong do we have to wait until we taste the true freedom that the Lord offers us? This mayreally depend on how soon we surrender and trust His timing to begin, and complete, thegood work He began. Just as the Israelites experienced total freedom from Egypt onlyafter walking through the sea on dry land, freedom may take a process and need God’s

work, a miracle, before we are totally free too. We don’t often think what it costs God to get our freedom, as we are sofocused on our freedom. Look at the bloodstained doorpost and get a glimpse of what that real Lamb of God would do,not just for the firstborn, but all who desire His total freedom. True freedom is free, but at a great sacrifice, especially toGod. Don’t take it for granted, and use this gift to remain free.

Enjoy being free, God’s way.

Ben Nicholsby Gina Meekma with Ben Nichols

Ben Nichols and his wife Madoka live in Berrien Springs, where Benis a Master of Divinity student at the Seminary. Madoka is a teacher andworks at the Crayon Box daycare on the Andrews University campus.Originally from Florida, Ben met Madoka in Okinawa, Japan. They havebeen in this area since June 2012.

Madoka and Ben got married in August 2011. They met when Benwent as a missionary English teacher to Okinawa, Japan, to the Adventistjunior high school, where Madoka was also working at the time. Theytaught a class together and felt a connection early on.

The Nichols family heard great things about Niles Westsidechurch–that the members are very active, the church is very youthful, and there are always great things happening here. They visited and found every word of that to be true.

Ben is helping out here at Niles Westside, partly because it's the best way to really be a part of the church body andfellowship with others, and partly because it's a part of his M.Div. education. Madoka is still working on improving herEnglish, as this is her first time in the U.S., but she’s enjoying the warm welcome from Niles Westside.

Ben says, “Thank you all for letting us be a part of this community. It’s really a joy for us to be here!”Welcome, Ben and Madoka! É

iPerceive Comes to Niles

Westsideby Nicole Koenigshof

When I got involved with theiPerceive evangelistic series, littledid I know what a blessing I wouldend up receiving myself! Manyprayers and a lot of planning led usup to the big day when iPerceivewith Pastor Dwight Nelson started atNiles Westside on February 8, 2013.Looking back, I can see how the HolySpirit was able to work in miraculousways to bring just the right people tothe event. I feel so blessed to havebeen a part of that. I was in awewhen I arrived on the first day andsaw how beautifully transformedour school gym was. I was lucky tobe involved closely with the TableHosts for the iPerceive meetings, and I believe that God led theperfect people to volunteer to dothat important job. I admit thatthere were some nights when Iwould arrive exhausted after a fullday of work, wishing that I could justgo home and relax, but thenDwight’s message would rechargemy batteries. It was so exciting tosee the same guests returning nightafter night. The format with theTable Hosts was a new experiencefor the iPerceive team, and I wasthrilled that it turned out to be avery warm experience for thoseinvolved. I heard many complimentson how well-organized the eventwas, and I can just praise God thateverything was such a success. Itwas amazing to see so many fromour church (and other localchurches) step up to meet the needsof this event, from outside in theparking lot, to registration, tohelping in the kitchen, to thechildcare rooms, to being in themeetings assisting guests, andeveryone in the background. Evenour school had to sacrifice being ableto use the gym all week. Some of the

teachers helped every night, andthen got up early to teach our kidsall day long. What commitment!

I think I smiled more at iPerceivethan I did the whole previousmonth! But they were genuinesmiles, smiles at returning guests, smiles at volunteers’ willingness tohelp, and smiles that Dwight’smessage cut right to the core of eachspiritual matter. Dwight Nelson wasable to start our spiritual lives on firewith his messages, challenging us tostudy for ourselvesthe truths in theBible, and I praythat our church cancontinue to fan theflames that were litin the hearts ofthose who attended. More than 400people attended the series, includingthose who volunteered their time ashelpers, and everyone I have talkedto felt blessed by the experience. Asa third generation Adventist, I wasn’tthe target audience, yet to have theexperience of seeing the Holy Spiritat work in such a huge way hasstrengthened my relationship withGod in incredible ways. In my effortsto join with those in my church toreach out to others, I found that Godreached even me. I’m glad thatevery week isn’t an iPerceive week, but I am excited at the direction thatthe Niles Westside Adventist Churchis taking and am looking forward towinning more hearts for God.

Ourtime on thisearthwaiting forthe Lord tocome isvery muchlike ourhope in the

soon coming of Spring. Living hereon this planet controlled by the evilone, it is hard at times to be able tosee the Spring through the snow fallof trials and hardships. We all haveour degree of sadness and pain, regret, and guilt. Breaking awayfrom the bondage of fear andmemories of pain is one of the mostdifficult trials a woman canexperience. Recovery can be slowand frustrating if attempted withoutthe Lord in control. We have abeautiful example of this struggleshared by one of our own members,Jacquelyn Hope Barney. She haswritten a book called Shattered, ofwhich we have several copies in thelibrary to check out. Her struggle isdeeply touching and recognizable. Here are some excerpts from thebook:

The Bible says trials come tomake you stronger, but where doyou get the strength from to endurethe trials? Where does the strengthcome from for a person strugglingwith cancer, or a girl being xxxx byher dad or mom’s boyfriend? Howabout when you lose your job, yourcar, your house? Where does thatstrength come from? Where does thestrength come from for the crackaddict addicted to drugs and thesingle mom prostituting herself forstability, that young men findingfamily and comfort in gangs, Whereis their strength?

Jacquelyn’s answers arecompelling and deeply touching. Thisis a book we can all relate to in someway. The book is also filled with themost wonderful poems, some ofwhich she has shared with us inchurch. Here is an excerpt from oneof them:

You walk by faith, and getdepressed when

The storms of life come headedyour way

You tell others to hold on and beencouraged

Yet get blown away by the winds of your adversitiesYou can say thank you, when someone compliments

youBut fail to give God the GloryYou can say you’re saved, sanctified and filledWith the Holy Spirit, but yet find it hard to forgive . . . You will have to check out the book to read the rest

of the poem.In our video collection, we have some new adult

stories. One of them is Journey to Jama. This is a tear-jerker, and a most wonderful true mission story. It is atrue testimony to Our Lord’s gracious mercy and guidancefor all His children.

The library ladies would like to extend a warmwelcome to those new members and visitors who mightlike to become members. We need volunteers to checkbooks and videos in and out, to keep track of the tablesand make sure the kids are taking their choices to theirparents to be checked out, and someone to put thereturned items away. Working in the library is one of thebest ways to get to know the congregation on a wholeand to become involved right away. Just ask for PhyllisShupp. We are putting out a plea for funds, as there areseveral series that we would like to add to the collection. The Love Comes Softly series is one for adults andchildren alike, and there are several books for juniors andteens that we would like to add. If you feel that the Lordis laying it upon your heart to give, you can give in theoffering plate (mark the envelope “Library”), or hand it toPhyllis personally. Hope to see you all over a book!

Spring is coming in right on time. The ground is stilltoo cold to turn and till, but it is time to start some ofyour seeds. Peppers and tomatoes take the longest. Mostpeppers and tomatoes need about 75-80 degrees togerminate, though you can get some heirloom varietiesthat take special care (the instructions should come withthe seeds).

Starting seeds indoors is very easy and not very timeconsuming. There are many ways to make a germinationchamber. You can buy a small plastic one at most gardenstores, and they work well if you have a VERY brightwindow to set them in–bright enough to createcondensation on the inside of the plastic lid. If you planon doing a lot of seeding, either vegetable or flowers, you

can make a medium to large germination chamber. Youneed one or two sets of heavy plastic shelving units (mostcome with three shelves), three florescent light fixtures, one power strip, one or two rolls of medium weight 6 milclear plastic, and one misting spray bottle. Put the shelves together, then take one to two lightfixtures each and hang them underneath each shelf.Leave the chain long–you will want to adjust the lights asthe plants grow. Take some of the plastic covering andcut it two inches over the length of the shelves (this is tohelp keep drainage off the floor). Then cut two morepieces of plastic to fit the size growing trays you have.(You will cover the trays with plastic when the seeds arefirst germinating to keep even moisture for the process.Once your seeds have germinated, you do not put thetray plastic back on.) Take the rest of the plastic andcover the shelving unit. (This does not have to be air tight, but you want to keep the heat and the moisture in andunder the plastic.) Sew your seeds following theinstructions on the packaging. The soil should be moistbut not wet. Place the trays in your germination chamberand mist down well (the first misting is very important).Once misted, place the tray plastic on the top of the trayscreating a kind of seal. Make sure your chamber iscovered to the floor, and the hard part is done. Now youonly need to mist down your seedlings/plants twice aday–once in the morning, and once at night between 8-10p.m. Depending on the seed and variety, you will do thisfor 7-15 days, twice a day. Remember once yourseedlings pop up out of the soil, take the tray plastic offand do not put it back on. If you have any questions, come to the gardening class or give us a call, and we willbe happy to walk you through it.

This month the Gardening Class will be held onSunday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at the church, in theJunior/Earliteen Sabbath School classroom. For ANYONEwho would like to use the church garden to grow theirown vegetables this year, we will be having our firstmeeting right after the Gardening Class on April 21. If youcannot make it to the meeting but would like to use thegarden, please call Kerry or me at 574-271-4229. If we arenot home, please leave a message with your name andphone number. Remember that there are no garden feesthis year.

The church garden is looking for a donation of fencing to keep the beautiful deer out. If you havesomething we may be able to use, please contact Kerry.
