From the Pastors 7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the

sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a

multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has

received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11

whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by

the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through

Jesus Christ. To Him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

“The end of all things is at hand…” From these words, Peter communicates an urgency for

Christians to live according to the command to “love one another earnestly.” Does your

faith have this urgency? Do you really expect the end to come any day? Whatever your

answer, the New Testament writers all agree: the end is near. And it’s getting nearer every

day.

Why does this matter? Because if the end is truly near, then we have good reason to

change the way we live today. People who are told they have a terminal illness live life

differently. They stop doing things which they don’t find fulfilling. Their every action is

filtered through a new lens: “If I died tomorrow, would I be happy that I am doing this

today?”

The apostles urge us to ask something similar: “If Christ returned tomorrow, would He be

happy with what He saw you doing today?” Or maybe equally important, “If Christ

returned tomorrow, would you be happy with what He found you doing today? Are we

bringing Him glory?” If kids get home from school before their parents get off work, do they

dutifully get started on homework right away? Or do they relax until right before mom and

dad get home? It depends on the kid. Do employees work harder when their boss is

around? Again, it depends on the employee. But the motivation is the same: “Let’s work

later… and enjoy ourselves now.”

This is a powerful temptation, and maybe you’ve given into it from time to time. Peter

treats it as a matter of self-control and sober-mindedness. Do we have the self-control to

restrain these temptations? Are we sober-minded enough to see the world as it really is—as

if it’s ending soon—or do we waste the precious time which has been given to us? Time

isn’t the only gift which we are encouraged to use wisely. We each have talents and

treasures as well, gifts which we are urged to use to love others and bring glory to God.

I don’t believe Peter means to scare us with these words; he wants to encourage. All

Christians are called to be responsible with their lives, because He will return soon. But we

live this way not because we fear being caught; we live this way, because we hope.

When our Lord comes again, we are promised that our work will be tested and our

sacrifices proven worthwhile (see 1 Corinthians 3). On that day, our service will truly bring

Him glory.

And this means that our lives in the present age matter. As we wait for His return, may God

richly bless your work. It may not be easy. But it is worth it. To Him belong glory and

dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Easter Breakfast—April 21 Calvary’s high school youth will be serving Easter Breakfast on Easter morning from

9:00-11:00 am. Stop by the gym for egg bakes, coffee, juice, and more. This meal will be

offered for a free will donation. All proceeds will go towards the National Youth Gathering.

Lutheran Marriage Encounter Lutheran Marriage Encounter is bringing a weekend experience

to your community Friday, April 5th—Sunday, April 7th, at the

Comfort Suites Indianapolis, 2750 Fortune Circle West. This is a

wonderful occasion for a meaningful experience for married

couples.

Community Garden

Spring will arrive...sometime. And we will be ready for our Community Gardeners!

Our Raised Bed Garden will be opened by April 15th; our In-Ground Garden depends

on getting the soil tilled and is usually not available until May 1st.

The Raised Bed Garden this year will be located over by the south parking lot and signs

will indicate its location. The In-Ground Garden site remains off of Orinoco Avenue at

the east end of the easement property.

Applications will be available April 1st in the Church Office.

Community Garden Work Day is Saturday, March 30th from

9:00 a.m. until 12 noon. All hands on deck as we mulch the

beds, set up benches and picnic table, construct a new water

tower, and other prep work for the Garden. Meet in South Lot

near shed. Wear your gloves. Back up day is Saturday, April 7th.

Amazing

What amazes you? What do you need to see or experience that causes you to say, “That’s

amazing!” One thing that amazes me is that every time I hit PRINT all these dots, letters, and

illustrations can be reproduced in a matter of seconds through the printer. Computer to printer

amazes me. One would think after thousands of PRINT clicks I would get over this amazement. I am

also amazed at the brilliance of a child’s smile, the glorious sunrise and sunsets, the speed and

agility of a cheetah, the sheer elegance and grandeur of a 100 story skyscraper, Apollo 11, the span

of the Golden Gate Bridge, the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs, the love of family, the Grand

Canyon, and an endless list of the gifts that God has blessed me with over the years. It is truly

amazing when we stop to create a list of amazing things in our lives.

I am amazed of the love that God has for us that He would send His One and only Son to suffer and

die for sinful people. Amazed that God calls us His children and that we are heirs with Christ. I am

amazed that He never stops loving me even when I have doubts and do not fully trust Him. All this

He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For

all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. We are able to STAND FIRM in His

amazing grace.

2019-20 School Registration

Registrations for the 2019-20 school year are currently being accepted. Staffing and other needs are

being planned as we open the doors to a new school year in August. Please contact the school

office for additional information. Inquiries are to be directed to our Director of Admissions, Jennifer

All Indianapolis Lutheran Elementary School Track Meet

The Lutheran Elementary School Community will gather on Friday, April 12 during the school day for

our annual track meet. Calvary’s 5th-8th grade co-ed track team will be competing in this meet.

The meet is being held at LHSI.

Good Friday Chapel

The students will gather for chapel at 2:15 p.m on Good Friday, April 19. We will be dismissed in

silence following chapel. All are invited to attend this Good Friday chapel service.

Easter Monday- No School

Calvary will be closed on Monday, April 22 for Easter Monday. This day is established to help assist

families with Easter travels. Please note: this day will be a snow make-up day if needed.

Fine Arts Fair

The 6th – 8th grade choir and 5th – 8th grade band students will spend part of the day at the Lutheran

High School of Indianapolis on Friday, April 26. The students will be under the watchful eye of a

clinician. Students from the other Lutheran Schools in the area will join them. We invite you to

attend the choir and band concert that evening at 7:00PM.

Student art projects will also be on display during this fine art fair. We thank God for the gift of these

talents. An evening of music and art await you. We thank Mrs. Judy Morrison, our choir director, Mrs.

Heather Alexander, band director, and Mrs. Ruth Armao, art department head for their work in

preparing this opportunity for our students.

ILEARN State Test Window

Students in 3rd-8th grade will take the ILEARN test between April 22 and May 17. Students will be

taking their ILEARN tests online on their Chrome books. We thank our Tech Committee, Dustin Smith

and Ethan Strange, for their expertise and efforts enabling this to occur.

National Day of Prayer

Thursday, May 2 is the National Day of Prayer. A special chapel service will be held on this day

beginning at 8:10AM. We are so blessed to live in a country where freedoms allow for a day such as

this. The service is being coordinated through our Prayer Ministry Team. Everyday is a day of prayer.

We take it to the Lord.

Save the Date

Our Walk Run Ride event is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, May 10-11. On Friday evening, May 10,

we will have our Bike Rodeo for the younger children. On Saturday, May 11 the 5K walk and run is

being held. Many additional activities are part of this weekend. More details to follow.

Salvatore and Marjorie Gioe Memorial Scholarship

The $2000 Salvatore and Marjorie Gioe Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating

senior or Lutheran High alumnus who is attending or plans to attend a Lutheran college, university, or

seminary to prepare for a career in full-time church work. Gioe Memorial Scholarship applications

Extravagant Sharing Many families received paper towels and tissues through

the Sharing Place of Lutheran Child and Family Services

because so many at Calvary care about meeting the

needs of others.

During the month of April please continue to share

extravagantly by purchasing and bringing boxes of

breakfast cereal to the Extravagant Sharing shelves in the

narthex. Bless others as God blesses you!

Ladies’ Saturday Bible Study Sat., April 6, 8:30 a.m. This month’s study will be from the LWML Spring Quarterly led by Ruth Remetta. Join

Compassion Ministry

Spring is Here! Bottles for Babies and Book Collection

Each Spring, Compassion does Bottles for Babies, collecting

money for Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the area. Be looking for

these bottles in the coming weeks. Compassion is also helping

Shepherd Community Center in downtown Indy by collecting new

and gently used books for their preschoolers that are going into

kindergarten. Watch for the notice in the bulletin

on both. We will start collecting books in May.

Fellowship Ministry

Ash Wednesday Dinner—Thank You!

Thanks to all who attended the Ash Wednesday dinner and supported the youth

going to the National Youth Gathering. We are thankful for the Thrivent Grant to

help cover the cost of the dinner so that $521.17 was raised for the National Youth

Gathering. A special thank you to Mr. Suresh Reddy for preparing the delicious

meal! How awesome to see the youth and their parents alongside the Fellowship

Team sharing the love of Jesus through cheerful service.

FLIGHT—High School Youth Group

FLIGHT meets Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm in the youth

room. Events typically include food, Bible study, small group

discussion, and an activity. This group is open to all students

currently in grades 8-12.

SAIL—7th-8th Grade Youth Group

SAIL will meet next on Wednesday, April 17th from 5:30-7:00 pm. This

event is open to all youth in grades 7 and 8. Friends from outside

Calvary are always welcome!

Stewardship Update By Rachel Daeger, Chair, Stewardship Ministry Team Thrivent Choice Dollars Benefit Calvary

Thrivent members have the ability to donate Choice Dollars each month and Calvary

Lutheran School has already received $1,015 in 2019! Members become eligible for Thrivent

Choice Dollars based on insurance premiums, contract values and Thrivent volunteer

First Student Scholarship Awarded from Wessler Endowment

The primary purpose of Wessler Scholarship Endowment Fund for Education of LCMS

Church Workers is to provide financial aid to Calvary students, former students, and their

families in LCMS colleges, universities, pursuing a full-time church work career within the

ministry of the LCMS. The fund was established in 2018 through the generosity of Mel Wessler

and the Distribution Committee is pleased to announce that Calvary’s Youth and Family

Director Sam Troemel is the first recipient. Sam is enrolled in the LCMS Specific Ministry

Pastor which enables students to take seminary courses from a distance as they prepare

for ordination. This program was made specifically so that congregations could rise up

leaders for positions within their congregation. For Calvary, this means Sam Troemel, who is

currently serving as Youth and Family Ministry Director, is receiving pastoral training for his

involvement within Calvary’s Connect contemporary worship services.

Interested in Financial Peace University curriculum?

The Stewardship Ministry Team has heard from several members interested in participating

in a Financial Peace University group and are actively looking for an instructor. Classes

meet once a week for nine weeks. Stewardship Ministry Team would purchase the leaders

materials. If you are interested in leading a class or attending the program please email

stewardship@clcs.org.

LCFS Stained Glass Window Dedication

Late last year, Lutheran Child and Family Services raised funds to

purchase 12 stained glass windows for the Chapel at Lutherwood

to assist with the spiritual growth of the resident children and staff.

That project was successful and a dedication of the installed

windows is set for Saturday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. at 1525 N Ritter

Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46219.

Have you been asked to serve or has the list of Calvary’s open volunteer positions in the

bulletin sparked your curiosity? I personally struggled for years to try and discern what

God’s calling was for me. While I was waiting to figure that out I volunteered for the

Communications Ministry Team since that is the work I did every day at my job. That just

seemed logical. Along the way Calvary started projecting the service details on a screen

and they needed helpers. That didn’t seem like much of a calling but it was something I

knew how to do. If there is something you know how to do, chances are there is a fit for

that ability somewhere in the body of the church. Have a question – connect with

Spring 2019 Update

Calvary supports a missionary couple serving in West Asia doing Bible translation work. This

couple lives in a country with no churches. Even though they live in an apartment in the

capital city, they still only have electricity about 50% of the time and lack some modern

amenities.

They have been doing well and staying pretty healthy this year, for which they're thankful.

The spring means removing coal and wood stoves and enjoying the warmer weather. It

also means picnics with friends and co-workers. Please pray for fruitful conversations during

these times of visiting.

In addition to language and culture learning, which is essential to their witness in their

personal relationships as well as their office work, they've been researching a group of

language varieties. It can be hard to imagine, but they're actually not sure how many

languages are spoken in their country! They've been transcribing data from several villages

and towns who claim the same ethnic identity and ancestry. They're trying to evaluate if

the people speak dialects of the same language or different languages altogether. This is

important because it lets them know who will need a separate Bible translation. It also helps

them know where and how to distribute these resources once they're available. Currently,

another organization is running primary schools in one of these languages. Their research

will also show them in what ways this curriculum will need to be altered for the other regions

and how much, if at all, the writing system would need to be adjusted. They're hoping to

finish this particular research project by the end of the year.

“Cornerstone of Salvation” - Sermon Text: Luke 20:17b - Rev. Shayne Jonker

"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" (Luke 20:17b). The Messiah of

Israel, Jesus, is a rejected Messiah. One of the architects and builders of Israel thought unfit

to be the cornerstone, but God sizes up the angles differently. This Jesus, born of the Virgin,

crucified and risen, reigning at the right hand of God, the One who baptizes you and

forgives you and feeds you is the rejected Rock of Israel and the Cornerstone of your

salvation.
