Return to LearnMonday, March 22, 2021,  was one of the most exciting days  for me in  recent  months because it was the day we returned to full-day classes.  It represented almost one full year since we had our traditional block schedule, and all KMC students were back in the building. Even though we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year, it felt like the first day of school all over again.  The building came to life as students arrived, and they spent their time greeting friends that they hadn’t seen in months.

While the return date was anticipated by many, we recognize that there is still much to do and many steps to take for a full return to “normal.”  Our commitment throughout the pandemic has been to provide a safe learning environment (no matter how that looked) for our students, faculty and staff, and we will continue to do so, while still providing an outstanding educational experience.

Throughout this school year on the hybrid schedule, we have followed several mitigations to limit the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health of our school. We have followed social distancing guidelines, conducted temperature checks, encouraged the use of hand sanitizer, and required the wearing of masks.

Due to the excellent health of the building and the community, the returning to regular block schedule (Schedule 1), increased COVID testing, shorter quarantine time frames, staff and student vaccinations, these previous mitigations may slowly be relaxed over the coming weeks. This will only be done as the health of the building allows.

The one mitigation that continues to protect us is the wearing of masks. Per CDC guidelines, we will continue to ask our students, faculty, staff and guests to the building,  to wear masks. This precaution will help us to provide a  safe learning environment, and student activities like all-school Mass, spring athletics season, retreats, prom and graduation can continue. We have found that students would much rather wear a mask then miss out on these important opportunities and events.

Lastly, there is no way that our school year could have been as successful as it has been without the support of our  students, parents, faculty and staff. The compliance with our mitigations and the flexibility with our rules and scheduling have helped us maintain the health of the building and allowed for us to provide our students with the best education possible. While the transition to normalcy will be a process that will continue long into next year, we’re so grateful and blessed to have such great support from our families and the Kapaun Mt. Carmel community.

A Tradition of Giving

A Tradition of GivingTradition plays an important role in our culture. Holiday family gatherings are built around it; universities tout it as a marketing point; and our Catholic faith relies on it to bolster our rich faith and connection to God.

At Kapaun Mt. Carmel, tradition abounds. In our 133-year history, we have developed a tradition of excellence in Catholic education that has spanned generations. Over the past several decades, that tradition has been extended to all Wichita Catholic high school students, because the gift of stewardship grants all the opportunity to receive a Catholic education regardless of their economic means.

The passing on of this tradition is only possible, however, through the generous support of our community to the Crusader Annual Fund. This fund allows us to meet our demanding operating budget each year, supplementing the resources afforded us through our parishes and their faithfulness to the stewardship model. It all works together, and the result is a tradition of giving that bolsters and perpetuates the traditions of excellence for which our school is rightly known.

Your gift - at any level - allows you to participate in A Tradition of Giving

that invests in our future.

For those that say they do not give annually, here’s some food for thought, and hopefully some points of clarification on where the money goes, why it’s critical to our success and how it benefits all 900 students at KMC.

Q: Why does KMC have an Annual Fund?A: Simply put, it takes significant resources to operate a Catholic high school; even more than a parochial primary or middle school. The high school is larger, the curriculum is more complex and the needs of the faculty are more extensive in the high school setting.

The education income that KMC receives from its feeder parishes, all of which comes from the tithing of the faithful, does not fully cover the costs of a Catholic high school education. Like other parochial high schools, KMC relies on donations to help meet annual operating expenses.

For 2020-21, the gap between educational income from parish tithing and expenses was $450,000 or about 8% of the budget. $6,700 is the basic cost per student and on average, we receive $5,900 from parish support, fees and other revenue, leaving a $800 gap per student. Annual giving helps fill this gap.

Q: What does the Crusader Annual Fund do for KMC?A: The Crusader Annual Fund provides resources for the operating budget, which supports everything from the latest technology and hardware, to the best teaching tools and classroom equipment, athletic and arts programs, safety and security for the campus, maintenance and upkeep, financial assistance, as well as faculty salaries and compensation (maybe the most important!) - all aspects of the school from the nitty-gritty to the inspiring.

Q: I tithe through my church, why am I asked to give more?A: By helping to cover the gap between the actual cost to educate a student at the school each year and parish support, your gift to the Crusader Annual Fund directly influences the educational experience students have at KMC. The availability of more resources equals access to more educational tools. It’s the difference between good and great. Also, contributions to KMC are tax-deductible, whereas fees are not. When you donate to the Annual Fund, you help keep fees lower and your gifts could entitle you to a tax benefit.

From the foundation of the United Catholic Stewardship model for educational funding, the intention was for the Catholic high schools, which are not owned by a parish, (as opposed to the primary and middle schools that are directly connected to a parish), to have three funding sources:

1. Parish direct support and subsidy (your tithe to your parish)

2. Fees (i.e. tuition of non-Catholic students, grants, athletic/activity charges)

3. Development, primarily from the Annual Fund and other donations

Some illustrate it as a three-legged stool- without all the legs, it would surely fall.

If you have any other questions about the Crusader Annual Fund, we have created a FAQ. Visit www.kapaun.org/giving/annual-fund to learn more.

Now more than ever, as a donor of your time and resources, you want to be sure that it’s making a difference and that every dollar counts. You can direct your dollars to a specific area - Education, Formation or Total Person. You can also designate your gift to “wherever the school needs it most.”

You are welcome to donate online. Otherwise, we look forward to talking to you during our phone-a-thon that starts soon. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Leadership ListThank you to the following KMC Parents who have donated to the 2020-21 Annual Fund through March 31, 2021:

Cross Bearers“Proud to be a Crusader.” We hear that time-and-again from alumni across the generations of Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School. The Crusader mascot has carried our athletics teams and activities from the very first days of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial, and it seems a fitting mascot for the type of young gentlemen that the Jesuit priests and brothers desired to turn out from CKM, just as it is fitting for the current Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders. It is fitting not necessarily because of its first known use, or even the common popular use of the term, but rather for what it truly and literally means.

The first known use of the term “Crusader” was in 1742, and was used to describe a person who participated in any of the military expeditions undertaken by Christian powers in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries to win the Holy Land from the Muslims (“Crusader.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Accessed 16 Feb. 2021). In modern times, the term is also used to describe a person who makes an impassioned and sustained effort to bring about social or political change (“Crusader.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, “b”). For example, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was often referred to as a “Crusader” for civil rights in America (Reddick, Lawrence D., Crusader without Violence: A Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. New York, Harper, 1959.).

The literal translation, however, and the one that makes the Crusader a fitting mascot for our school, comes from the Latin noun, “crux,” meaning cross, and verb, “cruciare,” meaning “to mark with the cross.” (“Crusade.” Online Etymology Dictionary, Douglas Harper. Accessed 25 Feb. 2021). Quite literally, then, a Christian Crusader is one who is marked with or bears the Cross of Jesus Christ.

Thus, a modern day “Crusader,” a Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusader, is one who daily bears the Cross of Jesus. The modern day Crusader’s principles must be grounded in the precepts of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for all of humankind. With this in mind, the modern day Christian Crusader is the type of person that we want our graduates to be; someone who, in the face of secularism, adversity, division or ridicule, still upholds and defends the Cross and the example of love that Christ gave upon it.

In today’s society, where criticism of mascots or adoption of symbols by groups of hate make headlines, it is our sincere hope that our modern day understanding and emulation of the Crusader would be in concert with and not in any way inhibit our ability to fully advance the mission of our school to educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ.

We are proud to be the Crusaders. We are proud of the heritage that our Crusader alumni have built for us, and we strive daily to carry forward that heritage and the legacy of excellence that comes with it. We pray that God be with us and that He continue to bestow His bountiful blessings upon our entire community.

Go Cross Bearers!

Reminders for students in the full-time scheduleSchool day hours are 7:50 am - 3:00 pm. The school office is open 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.

Masks are still required at all times. They must be tightly woven, two-ply, properly fitting, and worn over the mouth and nose. Gaiters are single-ply and cannot be worn unless they are folded over to be two-ply and completely cover the mouth and nose. The KMC Spirit Store will have new two-ply gaiters available for purchase in the coming weeks.

Student IDs must also be worn at all times.

Students were emailed a Google form to request a locker. They should check their KMC emails and fill it out only if they NEED a locker. Information regarding lockers were emailed to students’ KMC emails over spring break.

There are now four lunch periods. Students have received their lunch assignments from their third and seventh block teachers. Seniors with A, B, or C lunches will not have free lunch and must stay on campus. Seniors with D lunch are free to leave campus.

The school dress code will be enforced. See the agenda book for detailed information. Boys must be clean-shaven under their masks and hair should not touch the collar, ears or eyebrows.

Students must park in their assigned parking spots. Failure to do so will result in a $30 parking ticket. If they do not have an assigned parking spot, they should not park on campus. Contact [email protected] with any questions.

The senior door is ARMED during the school day. You are NOT allowed to enter or leave through that door between 7:50 AM and 3:00 PM. Violations will result in a detention and a demerit.

Walk In Sister’s Shoes SuccessWalk in Sister’s Shoes kicked off on February 5 and ended March 12. It included a pep rally, a week of super spirit days, and class donation jars. All funds together raised approximately $8,500 toward the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Education Fund. Seniors raised the most at approximately $3,300, then sophomores, then juniors, then freshmen. The fund provides financial support to those parishes that struggle financially to carry out the mission of Catholic education in a parish school. The students earned a students vs. staff basketball game, pajama days, among other incentives. Thank you to all the students and parents who participated.

Remains of Fr. Kapaun IdentifiedThe U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced on March 4 that the remains of Fr. Emil Kapaun, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, as well as the namesake of Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, have been identified.

A native of Pilsen, Kansas, Kapaun served as a priest in the Diocese of Wichita in addition to an U.S. Army Chaplain. His cause for sainthood is currently being reviewed by the Vatican; he is currently categorized as a Servant of God. To read more about this story, go to CatholicDioceseof Wichita.org.

Graduation InformationWe are happy to announce that, with the approval from our diocesan office and Hartman Arena, we are able to keep our previously scheduled Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2021 at Hartman Arena on Sunday, May 23, at 3:30 PM. We know that there has been speculation and other information out there, but we believe this arrangement for your graduation is in your best interests and provides you with the best opportunity to enjoy a ceremony that you deserve.

In working with Hartman Arena, we know that there will be restrictions put on us in terms of crowd size, the wearing of masks, and social distancing requirements. Those restrictions are as yet not fully known, but we hope to have more information soon. As of right now, we believe that we will be limiting the number of tickets to your Commencement Ceremony to seven (7) tickets per student. If that number changes, we will let you know as soon as we know, but please note that we will not be able to offer any additional tickets more than the final number set for us by Hartman Arena. We look forward to celebrating this special day with you!
