An upcoming broadcast of Inside Edition willfeature the unlikely pairing of Jill Viles of Gowrie andOlympic bronze medalist, Priscilla Lopes Schliep. Viles, and her husband, Jeremy, will travel to western Nebraskafor filming, along with a producer and film crew from thenews magazine show. Taping will occur early in April, with the show to air shortly thereafter on a date yet to bedetermined.  Jill and Priscilla gained international attentionas it was reported they share a mutation in the same gene, nuclear lamin, at nearly the same genetic location. Thisgenetic alteration alters steroid signaling in the cell.

In the case of Viles, this leads to muscle weak-ness, specifically a condition called Emery-Dreifuss

uscular dystrophy, but in the case of Priscilla, greatly

enhanced muscle development and strength. Scientistshope to learn more, not only about Emery-Dreifuss mus-cular dystrophy, but a great deal about muscle develop-ment in general.

By studying the very rare muscle presentationsof Viles and Schliep, scientists hope to gain understand-ing of how to direct the body’s cells toward an anabolic, rather than catabolic pathway. Perhaps these studiesmay serve to help not only Viles, but millions aroundthe world who could benefit from enhanced anabolicdevelopment of muscle.  Since the release of their story on an episode ofThis American Life, a radio program that airs on NPRstations in January of 2016, as well as a ProPublica story,

Jill Viles, Gowrie, Olympic medalistfeatured on Inside Edition; taping this weekShare mutation in same gene. . . .

Landus Cooperative was established today withfinal merger agreement signed by farmer board members

of Farmers Cooperative Company (FC) and West CentralCooperative.  Landus Cooperative is a farmer-owned agri-cultural cooperative, headquartered in Ames, Iowa thathas a global reach and a local touch with more than 725full-time employees at locations in more than 70 com-munities in Iowa and Minnesota and approximately 7,000member-owners.  “While today’s signing ceremony to formalizeLandus Cooperative is historic for our employees, ourcommunities and the greater cooperative industry, we arefocused on what this merger means for our customers andmembers going forward,” said newly appointed ChiefExecutive Officer, Milan Kucerak who formerly servedas President and CEO at West Central.  “Merging two strong cooperatives allows further

diversification throughout the supply chain and opens lo-cal and global opportunities for added value and growthon behalf of our members,” added Kucerak. “In short, thepurpose of this merger is to make two cooperative orga-nizations better than either one could be separately foremployees, members and customers.”  The cooperative’s interim website, now avail-able at LandusCooperative.com, includes profiles of the

newly named executive team, board member listing, aswell as an explanation of the company name and logo.

Kucerak noted that, like any merger of two or-ganizations, full integration is still underway. “We havebeen preparing for this integration date since the member-ship vote was announced,” he said. “While our customersand members will immediately begin to see our new logoon vehicles and at locations in addition to equipment andservice sharing, complete integration of our accountingand operational systems is likely to take many months.”  Kucerak stressed the cooperative’s transitionplans for customers. “We plan to make this transition aseasy and streamlined for our customers and their opera-tions as possible.”

The merger was approved by a vote by each co-operative’s membership finalized on Dec. 18, 2015. Eachmembership met Iowa’s state voting requirement for asuccessful cooperative merger as certified by indepen-

dent auditing firm Gardiner Thomsen. Iowa law requiresat least 50 percent of each membership (plus one) to vote, with two-thirds of those casting ballots to approve themerger.  Landus Cooperative becomes one of NorthAmerica’s largest grain storage companies and has shut-tle-loading access on all seven, major Iowa rail lines. Thediversified farmer-owned cooperative offers precisionagronomy services with more than 50 agronomists onstaff; a proprietary, member-owned brand of soybeans;expert grain marketing services; as well as corn and soy-bean processing including a facility in Ralston, Iowawhich manufacturers SoyPlus®, a high bypass protein

soybean meal for dairy herds across theglobe.

By Jill Viles  The March 21st Gowrie city council meeting of-fered pleasant discussion and exchange of ideas. Therewas a genuine feeling of goodwill throughout the meet-ing, and those present left feeling positive about how

events unfolded. The Gowrie City Council, after much discuss-sion, voted to renew the contract with TCB Sanitation atcurrent prices.  There was some discussion regarding the lengthof the next contract with the Blair family with MayorRedman and councilmember Keith Streit preferring a oneyear contract. Additional discussion moved on to that ofa single barrel set-up for garbage pickup. Concerns wereraised that not enough residents are taking part in recy-cling.

Councilmember Terry Willardson suggestedethods for monitoring adherence to recycling, are often

unpractical. “You can’t go digging through people’s gar-bage,” he said. However, Mayor Redman had a differentidea. “You can tell,” she countered.

“We’re happy to educate the community aboutrecycling,” offered Staci Blair. She explained that a doorto door education program was introduced in Moorlandand this has led to much more participation in recyclingin the community. Terry Willardson commented that inCalifornia, residents are provided one large barrel for re-cycling, and an additional small receptacle for other re-fuse to induce participation in recycling.Gowrie parks  The parks committee announced that soccer willcommence April 16th. Also, basketball backboards areup. There was some discussion regarding the purchase ofplay equipment for Laurel Park, but estimates are in therange of $13,000 even with a substantial discount. How-ever, the committee emphasized we do need to look into

more for this park as the little children have only a singleslide and a play motorcycle.  Jeff Strutzenberg announced the situation withthe city pool is in the lawyer’s hands. The gap they aretrying to cover is substantially larger than what was first

anticipated.  In other news, it was suggested clearer instruc-tions are needed with regard to the burn pile.

The state of the property at 905 Lincoln is stillof concern to the city and residents. It was suggested thehomeowner has someone helping him improve condi-tions. The homeowner claims, “progress has been made.”

However, when Police Chief Monaghan pa-trolled the property, he was concerned not enough refusehad been removed from the house. He does not believe adumpster has ever been put in place. According to MayorGayle Redman, there is nothing more the city can do atthis time. The next deadline for clean-up assessment ison or about April 1st.

Gowrie City Council renews garbagecontract; recycling discussed for cityPlayground equipment needed for Laurel Park. . . .

SV girls track teamcompete in outdoor meet

The girls ran their first outdoor track meet. Itwas a very windy night but that did not slow the girlsdown. SV won 4 of the 19 events and placed 2nd in 4more. Coach Swieter was very happy with the girls timesfor their first meet. There are 30 girls out for track thisyear and that really helps with the depth of the team andallows it where you do not have to have the girls run in aton of events every meet and get worn out.Varsity Results...  Shot put - Jaiden Ackerson, 32’ 3”, 2nd place; Dis-cus - Jaiden Ackerson 83’ 10”, 3rd place; H.J. Cub Scouts are“Scouting for Food”Saturday, April 9...

In a time when one in five children live in a foodinsecure home, no community is immune to hunger. CubScouts make a promise to help other people and to dogoodwill; in line with these values, Cub Scout Pack 42will be “Scouting for Food” again this year.

Scouting for Food, which began in 1985 as aSt. Louis Eagle Scout project and has spread nationwide, begins Saturday, April 2nd. Members of the Cub ScoutPack 42 will go to homes in Gowrie on April 2nd to dis-tribute door hangers asking people to leave donations outon April 9th to be collected for local food pantries.  On Saturday, April 9th, the scouts will be outagain, collecting any donations left on the front porch orsteps of people’s homes. The scouts will begin collectingat 10 a.m. on April 9th.  Anyone interested in donating should leave theitems in a bag on the front porch or front steps of theirhome to be picked up April 9th.

Jeremy Viles, Pack Leader, said that if possible, people should staple the door hanger to the bag to notifythe scouts passing by that it needs to be picked up. Also,

Viles asks that people please put bags out early, as scoutsbegin collections at 10 a.m. and likely will finish in theearly afternoon.  Marla Stokesbury, spokesperson for the area’s“Community Pantry”, said donations should be non-per-ishable, unexpired items. The pantry’s current “high pri-ority” needs include cereal, peanut butter, canned meat, canned fruits, beans (not green beans), pasta, pasta sauceand boxed meals.

The pantry cannot distribute expired items, soplease check your dates. Stokesbury also indicated that

onetary donations are very useful as they can be usedto purchase specific items when they are needed and/orspecialty items for families with special dietary needs.

In addition, monetary donations can be used toprovide special gifts to individuals such as Holiday food

boxes.  The Cub Scouts will not be collecting in sur-rounding communities this year; but there is still an op-portunity to help!

Farnhamville residents are asked to take theirdonations to Landus Cooperative in Farnhamville.

Callender residents are asked to take their itemsto the Callender Library.  In addition, you can also help make a big differ-ence in the lives of hungry children by donating directlyto the Scouting for Food campaign.

A donation of just $5 can provide 15 meals; $10will provide 30 meals. If you would like to donate di-rectly to the Scouting for Food program, please visit thiswebsite: http://www.mac-bsa.org/ScoutingForFood

Ms. Rasmussen’s 1st and 2nd grade multi-ageclass at Southeast Valley’s Prairie Valley Elementaryparticipated in the “Flat Stanley Project” this year. Thiswas a fun concept based off of the books about a fictionalcharacter named Flat Stanley who is two dimensional (orflat). Flat Stanley was able to go on many exciting ad-ventures all over the world. The class decided that theywould also like to go on adventures all over the worldso they sent their own Flat Stanleys out to friends andrelatives living all over the United States. They receivedmany pictures and letters back telling all about the adven-tures of their very own Flat Stanleys. The students wereable to share their letters and pictures with all the class. They really enjoyed showing off what their Flat Stanley

got to do while away on his adventures. Some of them

In 1902, the telephone exchange was set up, firstas an experiment. Private lines were set up on fence postsby Theodore Stromblad in Harcourt. The first office wasin the Wassgren home and Ada Wassgren was the firstoperator. The street address of this house is 115 SouthWood Street, the home of Keith Moenck. (The houseacross the street from this one was also one of the earlyhomes in Harcourt. It is the Bruce Harrison home at 110Wood Street.)  Ada, as a child of eight years, moved with herparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Wassgren and family into thecommunity in 1886, three years after the founding of thevillage. When she came to Lost Grove Township, all onecould see for miles were prairies, ponds and swamps.  Lost Grove, a group of trees, was the landmarkfor miles around and people knew where they were when

they saw it.  Ada was telephone operator for many years andwas well known for saying “Allow, Allow” when an-swering calls. She knew her patrons by name and oftendid special favors for them.  All three of Ada’s nieces worked for her at dif-ferent times. They were Le Ila Nelson Wassgren, JeanetteNelson Larson and Velma Nelson Kling. Tillie Engquist,

Christine Johnson, Phyllis Lundvick, Ethel Phipps, andLily Peterson were also telephone operators.  Ada’s father August Wassgren was born inSweden on Sept. 9, 1847, and died Dec. 8, 1920.  Stina Lotta Johnson Wassgren was also born inSweden. They were united in marriage on May 18, 1877.  In May, 1881, they and their oldest childrencame to America and settled near Dayton, Iowa. In 1886,they moved to Harcourt.  In 1893, they joined the Lutheran Church inHarcourt.  Their children were Ada, Carl, Emma, Hannah, and Mamie.  The daughter, Emma, married Andrew Nelson,a long time resident of Harcourt.

Iowa Legislature Focuseson Budget for School Aid

Leaders of the Republican-led Iowa House and theDemocrat-controlled Senate are pledging to pass a statebudget and adjourn in advance of the April 19 target date.  Last week, leaders announced a deal on couplingstate and federal tax law, a breakthrough that could leadto a budget deal within the next week to 10 days. HouseSpeaker Linda Upmeyer, R-Clear Lake, said the plan for

the next two weeks is clear.  “Once we accomplish the supplemental state-aid num-ber and agree on that,” she said, “then we will be able toagree on the size of the entire state budget.”  That will allow school districts to accurately plan forthe fiscal year, which starts July 1, as opposed to lastyear when legislative delay and a governor’s veto forcedschools to cut from their budgets when anticipated dollarswere not forthcoming. Bills signed by the Governor this week:House File 2386, an Act relating to grounds for

termination of parental rights of an individual relative tosexual abuse. This bill passed the Iowa House 95-0 onMarch 7 and the Iowa Senate 49-0 on March 16.

House File 2269, an Act providing for certainexcise taxes imposed on the sale of cattle and includ-

ing effective date provisions. This bill passed the IowaHouse 96-0 on March 2 and the Iowa Senate 49-0 onMarch 16.House File 2353, an Act removing prohibitions on emer-gency management organization employees from hold-ing elective office. This bill passed the Iowa House 97-0on March 7 and the Iowa Senate 49-0 on March 16.Medicaid Modernization goes into effect Friday

This week the Senate Human Resources Commit-tee again had a meeting to get an update on the transitionfrom state-run to managed care for Medicaid. Present-ers included Mikki Stier, Iowa’s Medicaid Director, JeanSlaybaugh, Iowa’s DHS CFO, and Liz Matney, the Man-aged Care Bureau Chief. This is the third of these meet-ings with others focused on CMS Readiness Criteria anda panel of MCO Representatives.

More than 560,000 Iowans are covered by Medicaid,a $4.5 billion program operated by the state of Iowa. To-tal spending on Medicaid has gone from $2.5 billion inFY 07 to $4.5 billion today. Despite the dramatic growthin spending, Medicaid members’ health outcomes havefailed to improve. The rising Medicaid costs promptedthe state to explore modernizing how it delivers servicesto Iowans utilizing the program through managed careorganizations.  The intent of Medicaid modernization was tocontract on a statewide basis with companies which hada demonstrated capacity to coordinate care and providequality outcomes for the Medicaid patients. Under theterms of the state contracts, the managed care organiza-tions cannot immediately cut services or pay providersless than a base rate in order for those companies to earn

profits. Those Iowans currently in a nursing home willsee no change for at least two years.

Since Governor Branstad’s announcement aboutmoving to managed care there have been more than 350

public meetings, trainings and listening sessions withmembers, providers and stakeholders. Not all of thesewere conducted solely by the Iowa Medicaid Enterprise(IME). A whole host of stakeholders were involved, suchas the Departments of Human Services, Public Health,Aging, Inspections and Appeals, Insurance Division, andOffice of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman.  By going to a managed care model for its Medicaidprogram, Iowa is utilizing nationally-experienced com-panies to coordinate care in a way that makes Medicaidmembers healthier and fits individual needs.
