Message from Your President Since the Old Time Gathering will not be held this year, we have lost one major fund-raising

activity. To replace this ‘lost’ income, several fund-raising events will be scheduled throughout

the year to raise the money needed to purchase books for the Wisconsin Bookworms™

program and for budgeted donations and organizational expenses. The fund-raising activities

that were approved at the January county HCE meeting are printed on page 5 in this newsletter.

Watch for newsletter and email notices as these fund-raising events are scheduled and

additional details are announced.

This year’s “On the Move and in the Groove” exercise challenge runs from February 28th

through May 28th. Copies of the activity chart were distributed to club representatives

attending the January and March county HCE meetings. This program isn’t just for HCE

members. Ask your friends and neighbors to join you on your daily walks. Please submit

completed activity charts to Marianne Zastrow by June 3rd. A county report will be compiled

and sent to WAHCE.

All HCE members are asked to complete an “Impact of HCE” report again this year. The

timeframe for reporting your volunteer activities and donations is June 1, 2015 to May 31,

2016. Copies of the report forms were distributed to club representatives attending the January

and March county HCE meetings. Please submit all completed reports to Diane Koch by June

3rd. A county report will be compiled and sent to WAHCE.

The Southeast District WAHCE Spring Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 27th at

Generations in Plymouth (Sheboygan County HCE hosts). Put it on your calendar and plan to

attend this gathering of HCE members from nine counties in southeastern Wisconsin! Contact

Diane Koch or Linda Feucht by April 5th if you plan to attend. Meeting details and

registration fee will be provided to you as they become available.

The Emerald Clovers HCE Club is making plans for a spring trip to an Amish community in

May. Details for this trip will be announced at Spring Council on Monday, April 25th.

Let’s get “on the move” and get more people “in the groove” with HCE. Ask your relatives,

friends and neighbors to attend Learning Sessions with you and to volunteer with you for club

community service projects. The “impact of HCE” will expand as we learn new things, share

what we’ve learned and care about others in the community and around the world!

County Administration Building, 127 E. Oak Street, Juneau WI or as noted in the calendar.

All Learning Sessions need five or more persons to sign up to attend.

Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the date of the program.

If fewer than five people sign up by that date, the session will be cancelled.

Hello from Pattie

Dear HCE Friends,

With longer days and warmer weather, I feel a sense of anticipation. Spring represents a time of rebirth

and awakening. Before our very eyes, we watch the gray of winter and the brown of early spring

transform into a glorious bloom of color as trees bud and perennials bloom. Along with the anticipation

of springtime changes, I feel a deep anticipation for changes that are eminent for UW Extension. By now,

most of you have heard and read about last year’s state legislators approved $250 million cut to the UW-

System. UW-Extension falls under the umbrella of UW and is subject to these cuts. Given the nature of

the cut, a complete re-design of the way UW-Extension serves the communities of Wisconsin is

necessary. I want to take the time to reassure you that as our organization puts into place a model to deal

with the enormity of the cuts, my dedication and commitment to you and my other work responsibilities

remains strong.

This spring look for a survey from me. The survey is a tool for us to take a close look at Dodge County

HCE and examine our strengths and weaknesses and areas to improve. I will also be attending local club

meetings. This is an attempt to get to know people and to understand members’ needs, wants, and

concerns better.

I sincerely invite you to this year’s Focus on Women Resource Fair. We are moving the event this year to

the Juneau Community Center April 28 from 3:30 to 8:00 P.M. The theme this year, “Live, Love, and

Laugh” will focus on empower ing women to live the best life they are able. Par ticipants will learn

more about Blue Zones, the Five Love Languages, and have the opportunity to laugh with Magic

Entertainer and Hypnotist Nino Cruzillini. Please join me.

Klub Korner

Indian Garden December

The Indian Garden Club held it’s Christmas Party in December. After eating at

Perkins, a dice game was played, and members exchanged Secret Pal gifts and drew names for next year.

Some members volunteered at Ruby’s Pantry in Lebanon.

January

The Indian Garden Club enjoyed a four course Swedish meal, with members bringing foods chosen for the

Study of Sweden. New President is Carol Lenius. Sharon Greenwald told of volunteering at Ruby’s Pantry in

Lebanon. Some members are doing gel pictures. Projects were chosen band plans made for next year. We

will have a Valentine’s exchange in February.

February

The Indian Garden Club held it’s annual Valentine’s Exchange, with each member bringing homemade or

handmade items to exchange. The club gave a gift of a flowering plant to Margie Eickelberg, who is ill.

Members learned about America’s First Ladies, with additional information, clippings, and books from the

Library show, which included what they wore and did.

Country Neighbors January

Members ate food from Sweden. Barbara told members about the First Ladies - some were very nice.

Mother Hubbards February

We had a “Special Luncheon” with members bringing “Healthy Snacks”. We enjoyed Apple Cider made by

one of our members, Toasted Whole Wheat Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches, Cheeses, Deviled eggs,

Whole Wheat Rollups with bananas and Nutella, pumpkin muffins, assorted fruits and veggies as well as

yogurt with granola and fruit for dessert.

Emerald Clovers Emerald Clovers made a donation to the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas. We challenge others

clubs to do the same in supporting this Statewide HCE Program. We had our Sweden Program with Laura

Schoenike as our speaker. She student taught in Sweden during the fall semester 2015 and shared her personal

experience in the country and made us Lussebulle, a traditional Swedish treat. Several members are involved

as volunteers with the Ruby’s Pantry Food Ministry in Lebanon. The club is holding a Community Service

Work Night and is making plans for a Spring Educational Experience to the Amish.

Ledgeview

Our main event in February was the Swedish dinner at the home of Mary Fogarty, who was dressed in a period

outfit. She shared a lot of information about the country and their mealtime traditions, including how they give

a toast. After dinner a short movie was watched on Sweden.

There were no other HCE Center submissions with club minutes for this newsletter edition.

FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES These fund-raisers were approved by members attending the county HCE meeting on

January 27th:

-- Quilt raffle with clubs donating additional items with a minimum $25 value

-- No-bake ‘Bake Sale’ (members donate $10 each). Members are asked to submit donations to Treasurer

Linda Feucht by the July 12th county HCE meeting. Club treasurers are asked to collect member donations

and submit one check for the entire club.

-- Glenn’s Market brat fry on September 9th, 2016 - all proceeds for Wisconsin Bookworms™

-- Culver’s work night and calendars – all proceeds for Wisconsin

-- Thrivent Choice® Dollars (add our organization to the list of possible

Suggestions for additional fund-raising or grant-writing opportunities are

always welcome. Bring your ideas to the next county HCE meeting or

HCE SUPPLIES

If you are storing any supplies that were purchased for an HCE event (and paid for by HCE), please contact

Diane Koch. We want to collect and do an inventory of all HCE supplies, and then store everything at one

location so they can be used at county HCE meetings.

SPRING COUNCIL, CULTURAL ARTS CONTEST,

SILENT AUCTION

The schedule for the evening’s activities on Monday, April 25th:

-- Cultural arts entries will be received from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm and judging will start at 6:00 pm.

-- Refreshments will be available from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. (Host: Juneau Center)

-- Silent Auction items should be in place by 6:00 pm and bidding will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

-- Presentation of the Dodge County HCE Scholarship will take place at 7:00 pm.

-- The business meeting will begin about 7:15 pm and adjourn by 8:30 pm.

-- View Cultural Arts entries after the business meeting adjourns. All entries must stay in place until

everyone has a chance to see them – about 30 minutes. (If judging is completed prior to adjournment, the

meeting may be recessed for a half-hour so all can view the cultural arts display.)

-- Top bidders must pick up and pay for their Silent Auction purchases after

the business meeting.

SILENT AUCTION Bring an item (or two) – new or gently used – that you no longer want to

keep stashed away in a drawer or closet. Bring some cash, too, and be ready

to bid on the items that others have brought. Join in the fun and help raise

money for the Sunshine Fund! (This fund pays for annual HCE social events

– the summer picnic and the Christmas party – and other non-budgetary

expenses.)

SUMMER PICNIC:

All HCE members, spouses and family members are invited to attend the HCE Summer Picnic at

Juneau City Park on Thursday, June 9th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm – with potluck supper at 5:00 pm. Each

person (family) attending is asked to bring a dish of your favorite food, with any necessary serving

utensils, and any non-alcoholic beverages you wish to drink. Plates, napkins, eating utensils and

beverage cups will be provided. Take a break from the summer heat and join your fellow HCE

members for some delicious food, socializing and a chance to vote for your favorite “Let’s Make

Music” entry. (Rain location: Dodge County Administration Building, Auditorium)

“Let’s Make Music” Bonus Category guidelines are on page 11.

COLLECTION FOR NICARAGUA LEARNING CENTERS:

Donations of sewing, baking and other supplies that are needed in Nicaraguan Learning Centers can be

brought to the HCE summer picnic on June 9th. These donations will be packed by members of the

Emerald Clovers Club and taken to the warehouse at Stevens Point. Copies of the list of needed

supplies were handed out at the county HCE meeting on March 10th.

Contact Diane Koch if you need additional copies of the supplies list.

PROGRAM PLANNING:

The 2017 Program Planning meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 15th

at 6:00 pm in the County Administration Building. All club Vice

Presidents (or another club member) and all County HCE Executive Board

Members are encouraged to attend. Each club should have at least one

representative attend this meeting to assist in choosing the educational

programs to be offered by Dodge County HCE in 2017. Give your

program suggestions to Sandy Peirick, Program Coordinator, by April 15th.

After a list of topics is compiled and distributed, all members will be asked

to vote on their favorites – with the top choices being considered for

inclusion in the 2017 Learning Session schedule.

Learning Session: Meet Alice in Dairyland

Meet Teyanna Loether and learn how she promotes Wisconsin’s diverse

agriculture industry during her travels around the state as the 68th Alice in

Dairyland.

Learning Session: Acupressure

Dr. David Milbradt will share how acupressure can help to reduce stress, and

how we can add it to our daily lives.

Learning Session: Aquaponics

Date: Wednesday, August 31 Time: 1:30 pm

Place: County Administration Building, Auditorium, Room F & G

Mark Krause will give us a virtual tour of the family’s new aquaponics farm near

Horicon. Aquapoinics combines the raising of aquatic animals (fish) with

hydroponics (the cultivation of plants in water).

Learning Session: Composting

Date: Wednesday, September 21 Time: 1:30 pm

Place: County Administration Building, Auditorium, Room H & I

Learn about the benefits of composting. Learn what to compost, and what

not to compost, using different composting methods.

Registration is required at least two weeks prior to the date of each Learning Session.

If fewer than five people register for any session, that session will be cancelled

A new Service of Love project for Dodge County HCE is clipping

coupons to support military families. Military families stationed over-

seas can use manufacturer coupons up to 6 months after the expiration

date. This program has been alive and doing well since 2007. Military families can save thou-

sands of dollars each year, making life living overseas more affordable for them. This project is

supported by the American Legion Auxiliary 146 Beaver Dam. They have sent coupons to To-

kyo, Japan, Germany and Italy. The military families can only use regular manufacturer's na-

tional brand coupons such as from newspaper inserts, coupon mailings, store displays & cou-

pons you may receive directly from the manufacturer. There are two grocery categories of cou-

pons, food and non-food. They can't use restaurant coupons. Note: Food, baby and pet coupons

are the most requested coupons and usually needed more than non-food. Food item ideas are

dairy, bread, food, canned goods, beverages, water, candy, meats and frozen foods etc. Non-

food idea items are baby/child cleaners, toiletries, make-up, paper products, vitamins, medi-

cines, pet foods, etc. Start clipping those coupons regularly and you can drop them off at a

learning session or any county HCE meeting. Just be sure to clip them neatly first, so they will

be easier to sort, and to mail. Make sure that the expiration date is visual or they will be rejected

at the grocery stores. Also clipping the coupons neatly will help us to keep the costs down in

shipping. We prefer the coupons to be no more than three months expired because of the time to

mail them overseas and for the families to receive them in time for use. Laurie Hron and Mari-

anne Zastrow will be in chairperson for this new activity.

NOTE: Please inform them how much time you spend clipping the coupons.

We have the following Dodge County schools involved with the Book

Worms Program: Schurz School, Watertown; St. John’s Juneau; John

Hustis, Hustisford; St. John’s, Fox Lake; and the Head Start Programs

in Beaver Dam. Thanks to our dedicated Book Worms Volunteers for

reading to the students and doing the related activities with the class.

Dodge County HCE received a slot at Glenn’s Market in Watertown to

do a Brat Haus Fund-raiser with the proceeds going to the Book

Worms project. The date is Friday, September 9,. 2016 – and the loca-

Dodge County Association for Home and Community Education 2016 Cultural and Textile Arts Contest Guidelines

The Dodge County HCE Cultural Arts Contest will be held on Monday, April 25, 2016. Bring your entries to the Dodge County Administration Building Auditorium between 5:30 and 6:00 pm. Entries must be in place by 6:00 pm.

Complete and attach an entry form to each entry. Additional forms will be available.

Up to twelve (12) winning entries will advance to the State Cultural and Textile Arts Show

held at the WAHCE Conference in Eau Claire on September 12-14, 2016.

1. All work must be done by entrant and completed after last year’s county contest. 2. Kits and patterns may be used as long as entrant does all the work.

3. All items must be clean or laundered or will be disqualified by the judge. 4. Photography must be an 8” x 10” photograph -- unmatted only -- put into an 8½” x 11”

plastic sleeve – slip in tag board or cardboard behind picture. Double-sided tape will hold picture to your tag board. Photographs matted or framed will be disqualified.

5. Poems, essays and short stories/plays must be typed. Use plain paper and 12 pitch

font. All entries must not be framed or in book form. Staple a cover sheet with the category/title which is to be centered on the entry. Name should appear only on the

back side. (Winning entrants will be asked to sign a permission form if they agree to have their piece printed in WAHCE Update.)

6. If bringing an easel for your painting or drawing, be sure to securely attach a label

showing your name, district and county to the easel with tape. 7. Six (6) Cards without envelopes must be mounted as a group on a flat sturdy display

board no larger than 14” x 22” or they will be disqualified. 8. Dodge County HCE and WAHCE are NOT RESPONSIBLE for any loss or damage of

19. Bonus Category – “Let’s Make Music”

For the past four years our "Bonus" contest has been greeted with a lot of excitement and

participation. We decided to do it again. This year we're celebrating with “Let’s Make Music.” The bonus category is just for fun!!

Here are the rules to enter:
