ENGLISH- THE SEALED NECTAR – MEMORIES OF THE PROPHET (PBUH)-AUTHOR- ISSAM DIAB See ing a n ove rwhe lming tende ncy tow a rds rec onc iliat ion a mong the ir c hiefs, som e

reckless, fight-prone youngsters of Quraish devised a wicked plan that could hinder the

pe ac e treaty. They d ec ide d to infiltrate into the c am p of the Muslims and produc e

intentional skirmishes that might trigger the fuse of war. Muhammad bin Maslamah, chief

of the Muslim gua rds, took them c ap tives, but in view of the far-rea ching imminent results

ab out to be achieved , the Prop het [p buh] set the m free. In this c ontext Allâh says:

"And He it is Who has withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the

midst of Makkah, after He had m ad e you victors over them." [A l-Qur'an 48:24]

Time p assed . Nego tiations we nt on but w ith no results. Then the Prop het [p buh] d esired

‘Uma r to see the no bles of Q ura ish on his be half. ‘Uma r excused himself on a cc ount o fthe personal enmity of Quraish; he had, moreover, no influential relatives in the city who

c ould shield him from da nger; and he p ointed to ‘ Uthman b in ‘A ffan, who b elonged to

one of the mo st p ow erful fam ilies in Makkah, as the suitable envoy. ‘Uthma n we nt to Abu

Sufyan a nd o ther chiefs and told them tha t the Muslims had c om e only to visit and p ay

their hom age to the Sac red House, to do w orship there, and tha t they had no intention

to fight.

He wa s also a sked to c all them t o Islam, and give g lad tidings to the be lievers in Makkah,

wo men and men, that the co nquest w as ap proac hing and Islam wa s surely to prevail

because Allâh would verily establish His religion in Makkah. ‘Uthman also assured them

that a fter the p erforma nce of c eremo nies they wo uld soon de pa rt p ea c efully, but the

Quraishites were adamant and not prepared to grant them the permission to visit Al-

Ka‘ ba h. They, how eve r, offered ‘Uthma n the pe rmission to pe rform the pilgrimag e, if he

so desired in his individual capacity, but ‘Uthman declined the offer saying: "How is it

possible that I avail myself of this opportunity, when the Prophet [pbuh] is denied of it?"

The M uslims anxiously wa ited for the a rrival of ‘ Uthman with mingled fee lings of fear and

anxiety. But his a rrival was c onsiderab ly d elayed and a foul play w as suspec ted on the

part of Q uraish.

The Muslims we re g rea tly wo rried a nd too k a solemn p ledg e a t the ha nd of the Prop het

[pb uh] that they wo uld sac rifice their lives to a venge the d ea th of their Com pa nion a nd

stand firmly by their ma ster, Muha mm ad [pbuh], und er all co nditions. This pled ge go es

by the name of Bay‘at Ar-Ridwan (a c ovenant o f fealty). The first me n to ta ke a p led ge

we re Ab u Sinan Al-Asadi and Salam ah b in Al-Akwa ‘ , who g ave a solemn p rom ise to die

in the cause o f Truth three times, at the front of the army, in the midd le and in the rea r.The Prop het [p buh] c aught his left hand o n be ha lf of ‘ Uthman. This fea lty wa s swo rn

under a tree, with ‘Umar holding the Prophet’s hand and Ma‘qil bin Yasar holding a

branc h of the tree up. The Nob le Qur’â n ha s referred to this pled ge in the follow ing

words:

"Indee d, Allâh was pleased with the be lievers when they g ave their Ba i‘ a  (pledge) to you

(O Muhamm ad [pbuh] ) unde r the tree." [A l-Qur'an 48:18]
