General Switchgear & Controls Ltd.provides two type of framing for steelbuilding system.
Truss FrameThis type of design is employed forlarger buildings and when equipmentinstalled is heavy and a single point liftwith spreader bars is required. In thisdesign the primary trusses spanningthe width of the building are spaced ona pre-determined bay length andsupport the secondary structuralmembers and walls.
Self-FramingThe majority of our buildings aredesigned using self-framing, selfsupporting method. This type ofbuilding utilizes the cladding asprimary load bearing for the roof and/or wall elements, also functioning as aweather barrier. It may be either asingle or multi-span structure.
5. STRUCTURE BASE
The base frame is designed for thestatic and dynamic load requirements.Welded bracing provides adequatestrength for handling the completeassembly with the base lifting lugs. The base frame consists of structuralsteel, A36 channel or I-beam and
angled structural sections as requiredmeeting the design load conditions. Theunderside of the base frame is coatedwith a corrosion resistant undercoatingfor protection against corrosion oralternatively hot dipped galvanized.
The base is designed for installation onconcrete pier or pad provided bycustomer. Concrete Slab, crushed rockor other kinds of foundation are alsoacceptable depending on the site soilcondition. Removable lifting lugs areprovided on the base for lifting/handling.Single point lifting of the completedbuilding is possible by using slings andspreader bar.
6. FLOOR
The floor plate is constructed from 3/16or ¼ inch steel plate welded to the mainand cross member of the base frameand is designed to support heavyequipment and floor loads. Removablecover plates are provided to gain accessat the bottom of the base frame, ifrequired. The floor plate is designed for afloor live load of 50 PSF to 250PSF witha concentrated load of 2,000lbs.Thefloor is finished with anti skid paint as astandard. Checkered and anti-skid floorplates can also be provided, if required.

7. WALLS
The exterior walls are made from 11gauge sheet steel. The wall sections areuniquely formed at the sides, top andbottom to provide the required strength &rigidity without the use of a framedstructure. The wall frames are boltedinside to the base frame; roof andadjacent wall frame and thus provide aclean & smooth external appearance withno fastening visible from outside.
A weatherproof gasket is providedbetween the panels, base frame and roofto provide complete weather sealprotection for long service and lowmaintenance.
The walls are designed to withstand awind loading of 125 miles per hour.
The formed wall and roof sections aredesigned to install fibre-glass insulationinside the enclosure.
The interior walls are made from 14gauge sheet steel and bolted to the wallsection to provide smooth appearancesinside.
The walls are reinforced with angles orchannels as required in those areaswhere heavy equipment is mounted onthe wall .e.g. Distribution panel, transformer, ventilation fan, etc.
8. ROOFS AND CEILING
The roof panels are made if 11 gaugesheet steel and are formed. Adjacentroof panels are gasketted and bolted.Rain caps are provided over the jointsof the sloping roof, thus virtuallyeliminating water or ice build-up.
The roof sections are designed for alive load of 40 PSF and concentratedload of 300lbs. The roof is alsodesigned for snow load and rain loadof 45 PSF.
Roof trusses are formed from 11gauge sheet steel and are sloped toprovide a pitch of 2-3 degrees.
The interior ceiling is made from 16gauge pre-finished white sheet steelpanels and fixed to the flange of thetruss. Fibre glass insulation isprovided between the roof and theceiling, if required
Electrical LightningFluorescent lighting, twin-tube,4ft.fixtures with diffusers provide 50 ft.candles of light at 5ft.above the floorlevel for the switchgear and otherequipment. Manual 3-way lightswitches are provided at eachpersonnel door entrance.

The emergencylight will switch-on automatically incase of loss of AC supply and willmaintain light for 1-1/2 hours.Exit signs(LED type) if specified are provided atthe top of each personalizeddoor.High pressure sodium typeexternal lamps are provided aboveeach entrance door. External Lightsare controlled by photo-electric cell.
9. DOORS
Two access doors are provided one ateach end of the building and sized 36"x 84".Doors are double-walledconstruction, 1-3/4" thick with fibreglass insulation and made from 16gauge steel reinforced with a weldedframe.
The doors are provided with heavyduty stainless steel hinges, doorcloser, aluminum threshold, weatherstripping and panic hardware, consisting of a key lock cylinder on theoutside and a defeating panic bar onthe inside for emergency exit.
Fire rated doors with CSA or UL labelcan be provided if specified.
Equipment Access DoorsHinged, bolted and gasketted rear doorsare provided behind each frame ofswitchgear or other equipment whichrequires access at the rear for cabling ormaintenance purposes. Thisarrangement reduces the size of thebuilding.
All external doors are gasketted, fibreglass insulated and drip shields areprovided above the door.
10. INSULATION
Fibre glass insulation can be provided inthe walls, roof, floor and access doorswhen specified.Interior walls and ceilingsare provided as standard when fibreglass insulation is specified to providesmooth internal appearance.

maintain an interior temperature of21degree C. The heaters arethermostatically controlled.
VentilationExhaust fans and hooded louvers aresupplied as standard to provideadequate ventilation within the building.
Air ConditioningAir Conditioning system (HVAC), ifrequired can be provided to maintain aninternal temperature of 21degree C.Theair conditioner will be sized based on theambient site temperature, the size of thebuilding, insulation system of the buildingand the heat dissipated by the electricalequipment within the building.
12. ELECTRICAL WIRING
All electrical work is completed in thefactory so that when the building arriveson site all that is required is to reconnectthe shipping splits and connect theexternal cables and buses as required.
Electrical raceways consist of cable tray, conduit or other approved raceways asrequired are provided within the buildingto facilitate interconnection between theelectrical equipment.
All electrical work is carried out inaccordance with the Canadian Electrical
Code (C22.1) and National ElectricalCode(NEC).
If specified, the critical and non-criticalwiring can be segregated or shielded.
13. GROUNDING
A Bare 4/0 copper cable or ¼ x 2copper bus is provided around thebuilding perimeter and bonded to thebuilding steel approximately every 5 ft.This perimeter ground bus or cable isused to connect to the frame of theelectrical equipment in the building.
Two connection points are providedfor the connection to the customer’sground.
14. PAINT FINISH
Base FrameThe base frame is cleaned &washed to remove rust, scale, dirt, oiland grease and then coated withcorrosion resistant paint or galvanized
Walls & Roof PanelsThe exterior walls and roof panels arewashed with a solution of phosphate, then rinsed and cleaned to remove alltraces of dirt, oil and grease.
The panels are then powder painted
