Arcadia & the Connecticut River Valley Wildlife Sanctuaries 2019

Dear Arcadia Community,

During this 75th anniversary year, we’ve been talking about how Arcadia has been community-supported since day one. We see that truth as we look at the development, delivery, and success of Arcadia’s work to protect land, educate about the environment, and act to address climate change.

Volunteers are essential to all our offerings. Donors’ faithfulness allows us to do the ongoing work of land protection, habitat management, and land restoration. Their willingness to take risks supported the launch of youth climate programs and our new partnership with the Holyoke Public School District. Our community is making possible life-changing experiences for young people.

As we move into 2020, the demand for our programs is ever-increasing. To meet this need, we will construct a Teaching Pavilion in the Arcadia field. We are in the final stretch of our fundraising efforts as I write this note to you.

The greatest feeling that has come over me during this anniversary year is gratitude for the land, the wildlife it supports, and this community that makes Arcadia so special. I look forward to working with you to advance our work in the year to come.

A new partnership with the Holyoke School District brought all 20 third grade classrooms to Arcadia in the fall to learn about local habitats.

The students hiked around the sanctuary and compared habitats of New England with others around the world—especially Puerto Rico and Mexico, where many have lived or have families.

Amidst the sounds of hikers imitating chickadee calls and delighted "Ooos" over salamanders and chipmunks, one child was overheard to say: "This is the best field trip ever!"

They, like Arcadia’s thousands of program participants, are on their way to becoming the next generation of nature heroes who will pro-tect the environment.

Facing the Climate Crisis

Here, as elsewhere, youth are leading the way in addressing the climate crisis.

Arcadia’s climate education programs support these young climate activists to grow their knowledge, develop skills, make real change, and have their voices heard. The 3rd annual Youth Climate Summit, co-led by the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, brought together the largest number of teams yet with 12 high schools participating.

Students are returning to their schools to begin projects such as waste audit and recycling expansion, installation of solar panels, spirit weeks with environmental themes, a school-wide climate fair, and a climate walk and symposium.

Restoring natural systems has been a part of Arcadia’s work for years. In 2019, we continued to maintain our restored grass-lands and saw the fruits of our labor with breeding American Kestrels, Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows joined by the increasingly rare Eastern Meadowlark and state-listed en-dangered Grasshopper Sparrow.

This year, we also moved our Floodplain Forest Restoration Project forward and our longstanding partnership with the City of Northampton added a new project to its list: restoration of the Pine Grove Golf Course. Both proj-ects will see shovels in the ground in 2020.
