  • What's new> Do you have an idea for a feature you'd like to see in ArcGIS Maps for Office? Tell us about it at the ArcGIS Ideas site.

ArcGIS Maps for Office is a minor update that brings you improved speed, better usability, and many bug fixes. Here are somehighlights:• ArcGIS Maps for Office now recognizes your organization's default geocoder.

    • ArcGIS Maps for Office now uses a Chromium-based browser to display maps, meaning that working with your data is muchquicker. Even when working with lots of data, you can pan and zoom your maps effortlessly.

    • ArcGIS Maps for Office now supports vector basemaps and layers, which means your maps look even better on high-resolution monitors.

    • You can now select items on a map and export the corresponding rows of data to a new worksheet or new Excel workbook, allowing you to work with the data where you want.

    • Visual improvements to the Add Data and Style Layer interfaces help you load and visualize your data more easily.

    • Pop-up infographic settings persist across layers, so you don't have to make changes to each individual layer.

    • Cells that contain formulas update the map when the source data is updated.

    • Map and layer styles are rendered correctly when cell values change.

    • You can now specify the spatial reference system to use when you export a layer.

    • Many more bug fixes, including localization and internationalization issues.

  • Deploy across the enterpriseLarge organizations may not want to deploy the ArcGIS Maps for Office add-in to each computer on their network individually. To support large-scale deployments, ArcGIS Maps for Office includes options for installation from the command line.Automated deployment solutions can be built using these command line options. For example, if your organization wants touse Portal for ArcGIS as the default ArcGIS connection, you can set the CONNECT_TO parameter to your Portal for ArcGISURL. If you use this setting when you deploy across the organization, all computers will use your Portal for ArcGIS.

Install required softwareBefore you begin, be sure that the required software is properly installed and configured on each system. Although you canuse the FORCEINSTALLPREREQ parameter (set to true) to check for software prerequisites and automatically install missingsoftware, some enterprise systems mandate that required software be installed separately.

ArcGIS Maps for Office requires the following software:• Microsoft Office 2010, 2013, or 2016*

*Important: With Microsoft Office 2016 version 16.0.6326.1010, ArcGIS Maps for Office backstage controls do not functionas designed. All other Microsoft Office 2016 versions are supported

    • Microsoft Windows. Supported versions are as follows:▪ Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit)

    ▪ Windows 8 (32 bit and 64 bit)

  • Note: The following code is broken onto separate lines for clarity only. Type the code intoyour command window on a single line.

    ArcGISMapsForOffice_x86.exe/quiet/msicl "CONNECT_TO=https://www.arcgis.com"/msicl "FALLBACKTOCLOUDRESOURCES=false"/msicl "FORCEINSTALLPREREQ=true"/msicl "CHECKFORSOFTWAREUPGRADE=true"/msicl "FORCEUSERAPPCONFIGUPDATE=true"/msicl "ESRIMAPSWEBROOT=https://la.arcgis.com"/msicl "ESRIMAPSWEBPROXY=/proxy"/msicl "ENABLEUSERFEEDBACK=true"

    3. Press Enter.

The command shown above includes all the available configuration options. Some parameters are mandatory; others areoptional. If you do not want to change an optional default configuration, you do not need to include it in your command.

Available options are the following:• CONNECT_TO—This parameter is mandatory. The value for this parameter is either https://www.arcgis.com, the URL

to your ArcGIS Online organization, or the URL to your Portal for ArcGIS instance. Change this value to point to theappropriate location.

    • FALLBACKTOCLOUDRESOURCES—This parameter is mandatory. If your organization uses Portal for ArcGIS, the resourcesmust be installed on the same system as the portal. Setting this parameter to true allows users to work with ArcGIS Mapsfor Office if the resources are not available on your portal and the user has Internet connectivity. The default value is false.

    • FORCEINSTALLPREREQ—The ArcGIS Maps for Office installer checks whether required software is installed on the system. If this parameter is set to true, prerequisites are installed before installing ArcGIS Maps for Office. If set to false, theinstallation process aborts if required software is not found. The default value is false.

    • CHECKFORSOFTWAREUPGRADE—If set to true, the installer verifies whether a new version of ArcGIS Maps for Office isavailable. If you don't want to check for upgrades, set this value to false. The default value is true.

    • FORCEUSERAPPCONFIGUPDATE—When you use ArcGIS Maps for Office for the first time, custom configuration files arewritten to your roaming directory. These files hold configurations for custom location types, ArcGIS connection settings, andmore. These settings are left in place during upgrades to new versions of ArcGIS Maps for Office. To reset these files to thedefault settings (or the settings specified during the installation), set this parameter to true. By default, this parameter is setto false for silent installations.

    • ESRIMAPSWEBROOT—This parameter specifies the location of the JavaScript files used by ArcGIS Maps for Office. Bydefault, this is set to https://la.arcgis.com when the ArcGIS connection is either https://www.arcgis.com or theURL of your ArcGIS Online organization. If your organization uses Portal for ArcGIS version 10.3 or later, the default value is the location on the portal machine whererequired JavaScript files are written during installation of the ArcGIS Maps for Office resources (see Work with Portal forArcGIS).

  • If your organization uses Portal for ArcGIS version 10.2.2 or earlier, or if your portal is behind a firewall, you may need tohost the files on a server on your local network. Follow the instructions to configure ArcGIS Maps for Office in adisconnected environment and use this parameter to point to the files on your local network.

If your ArcGIS connection is either https://www.arcgis.com, the URL to your ArcGIS Online organization, or the URL toa Portal for ArcGIS instance version 10.3 or later, it is recommended that you use the default parameter value (do not specifythis parameter in your command).

    • ESRIMAPSWEBPROXY—Older browsers sometimes need to use a proxy to avoid errors related to Cross Origin ResourceSharing (CORS). Normally, this proxy is hosted by Esri on ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS and, in most cases, you do notneed to change the default value. The only time this value should be changed is if ArcGIS Maps for Office will be connectingto Portal for ArcGIS and you want to host the proxy in a custom location. In that case, use this option to point ArcGIS Mapsfor Office to your custom proxy location.

    • ENABLEUSERFEEDBACK—If set to true, this enables the Esri User Experience Improvement program, allowing the programto send anonymous information to Esri . By default, this parameter is set to true; to disable user feedback, set thisparameter to false.

  • ArcGIS authenticationArcGIS Maps for Office works directly with an ArcGIS Online organization or with a Portal for ArcGIS instance. Although userscan view the map without signing in, functionality is limited. Logged-out users can view and navigate the map, and anychanges to a dataset that were previously used to create a map will be reflected in pop-ups and, in some cases, the map'sappearance. Signing in to ArcGIS allows the ArcGIS Maps for Office add-in to connect to the platform and enable fullfunctionality of the map.

The authentication method used to sign in is determined by the way you have set up security features for your ArcGIS Onlineorganization or Portal for ArcGIS instance. ArcGIS Maps for Office requires no specific steps to implement the authenticationmethods supported by ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS. For details about general configuration settings, see ConfigureArcGIS Maps for Office.

For more information about ArcGIS authentication and to ensure that security settings are properly implemented, refer to thedocumentation for ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS.

  • Work with Portal for ArcGISPortal for ArcGIS is a repository for location-based data on your organization's network. Portal for ArcGIS is an alternative tocloud-based hosting and provides access to all your organizational data on-site behind your firewall. ArcGIS Maps for Officeworks with Portal for ArcGIS in much the same way that it does with ArcGIS Online, although some features are not availableon the portal—specifically those related to an outside Internet connection. For example, a layer showing a live data feed fromArcGIS Online (such as traffic information) will not work on Portal for ArcGIS because the data requires an active Internetconnection. Additionally, if you plan to geocode lines or polygons, you must explicitly configure your Portal for ArcGIS to do so.For more information, see Configure your own geocode service in the Portal for ArcGIS help, or watch this video.

To start working with Portal for ArcGIS in your organization, you need to do the following:• Host the resource files required by ArcGIS Maps for Office on your network

    • Set your ArcGIS Maps for Office ArcGIS connection to point to your Portal for ArcGIS instance

Note: ArcGIS Maps for Office currently only supports Portal for ArcGIS configured usingHTTPS.

  • Host the resource filesTo use ArcGIS Maps for Office with Portal for ArcGIS in your organization, you need to host the JavaScript and other resourcefiles required by ArcGIS Maps for Office on your network.

Depending on the version of your Portal for ArcGIS instance and the operating system on which it is installed, there aredifferent ways to do this.

Portal for ArcGIS 10.3 and later on WindowsIf you're using Portal for ArcGIS 10.3 or later on a Windows server, install Portal Resources for ArcGIS Maps for Office directlyon your portal. This is a one-time installation performed on the computer or server hosting your Portal for ArcGIS instance. Thisis the recommended method to use when possible.

    1. Download the ArcGIS Maps for Office Resources installer, ArcGIS Maps for Office Resources for Portal forArcGIS 10.3 or higher executable.

    2. Run the installer on the Windows computer hosting your organization's Portal for ArcGIS instance.

    3. Accept all default options to allow the installer to copy the necessary files to your portal.

    4. Set your ArcGIS connection within ArcGIS Maps for Office using the instructions below.

Portal for ArcGIS 10.3 and later on LinuxIf you're using (Portal for ArcGIS 10.3 or later on a Linux server, you must manually host the files on the network.

Note: You must be a system administrator to perform these tasks. You must have thepermissions required to modify files on the computer running ArcGIS Maps for Officeand the ability to host and make changes to a web server on your network.

To manually host the files on your network, do the following:

    1. Download the ArcGIS Maps for Office Resources for Portal for ArcGIS 10.2.2 or prior ZIP file and extractthe contents. The ZIP file contains a folder named office.

    2. On your Portal for ArcGIS machine, browse to the following location:portal//webapps/docroot/resources/esrimapsforoffice/

    3. Create a new subfolder named 4.0.4. Copy the office folder from the extracted ZIP file and paste it into the new 4.0 folder on your portal machine.5. Set your ArcGIS connection.

Other Portal for ArcGIS configurationsFor all other portal configurations (Portal for ArcGIS versions 10.2.2 or earlier, or operating systems other than Windows), youmust manually host the files on the network.

This option also requires that you edit configuration files on the ArcGIS Maps for Office client machines.

  • Note: You must be a system administrator to perform these tasks. You must have thepermissions required to modify files on the computer running ArcGIS Maps for Officeand the ability to host and make changes to a web server on your network.

To manually host the files on your network, do the following:

    1. Install and configure a web server such as IIS, Apache, or Tomcat. This will be used to host the files needed for use by ArcGIS Maps for Office on your local network.

    2. Download the ArcGIS Maps for Office Resources for Portal for ArcGIS 10.2.2 or prior ZIP file and extractthe contents.

    3. On your web server, create a virtual directory named ArcGISMapsWebRootContents and copy the contents of theextracted ZIP file into it.

    4. On your ArcGIS Maps for Office client machine, open a file explorer and browse to the following location:C:\Program Files(x86)\ArcGISMaps\Office

    5. Using a standard text editor, open the following file:ESRI.ArcGIS.Mapping.OfficeIntegration.Excel.dll.config

    6. Change the EsriMapsWebRoot value to point to your ArcGISMapsWebRootContents folder on your web server (forexample, ).Save the file and exit the text editor.

    7. Repeat the previous step for the ESRI.ArcGIS.Mapping.OfficeIntegration.PowerPoint.dll.config filelocated in the same folder.

Note: If a user opens Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint before you complete the ArcGIS Mapsfor Office configuration, the changes made to the Program Files(x86) folder won'twork. In this case, delete the configuration files from the roaming directory for theuser (for example, C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\ArcGIS Maps). The next time Excel and PowerPoint are started, ArcGIS Maps for Office will detectthat the files are missing and copy the correct files into the roaming directory.

    8. Set your ArcGIS connection.

Set your ArcGIS connectionTo connect Portal for ArcGIS to ArcGIS Maps for Office, you need the following information about your portal:• Portal for ArcGIS server URL

    • Web adapter name

For example, say your Portal for ArcGIS server URL is https://myPortal.example.com, and your administratorconfigured your web adaptor to be arcgis. In this case, the URL to your Portal for ArcGIS would behttps://myPortal.example.com/arcgis. By default, the web adaptor for the portal is arcgis, but it can be changed bythe administrator for your organization. If you are unsure of what to use as your web adaptor, ask your Portal for ArcGISadministrator.

  • Configure a custom geocoderGeocoding is the process of transforming a description of a location—such as a pair of coordinates, an address, or the name ofa place—to a location on the earth's surface. ArcGIS Maps for Office uses the default geocoder your administrator configuredin ArcGIS.

Esri provides you the ability to locate addresses, cities, landmarks, business names, and other places in more than 100countries around the world. By default, ArcGIS Maps for Office uses the Esri World Geocoding Service to locate point features(such as addresses, United States cities, and world cities), and the Esri GeoEnrichment Service to locate polygon and polylinefeatures (such as ZIP Codes, states, provinces, and countries). An ArcGIS administrator can also create custom geocoders toidentify specific boundaries, such as water districts or zoning boundaries, and set any of the custom geocoders as the default.ArcGIS Maps for Office automatically uses the geocoder that the administrator configured as the default geocoder within yourArcGIS organization.

For details about how ArcGIS Maps for Office maps location information, see the following:• Geocoding addresses (point features): Esri World Geocoding Service—Converts an address to an x,y coordinate.

    ▪ Esri World Geocoding Service documentation

    ▪ Esri World Geocoding Service coverage

    • Geocoding place name lookups (polygon or polyline features): Esri GeoEnrichment Service—Looks up place names such ascountries, states, ZIP Codes, postal codes, and other standard geographies.• Esri GeoEnrichment Service documentation

    • Esri GeoEnrichment Service coverage

When properly configured, Portal for ArcGIS also uses the World Geocoding Service hosted on ArcGIS but only geocodespoint features by default. If your organization plans to geocode lines or polygons, your administrator must explicitly configurePortal for ArcGIS to do so. For example, if your organization has its own locator data that defines sales district boundaries (or ifyour portal does not have access to ArcGIS Online), your administrator can publish a geocode service and set it as yourportal's geocode utility service.

It is important to note that configuring a custom geocoder must be carried out by an administrator with access to ArcGIS forDesktop and other administrative tools. ArcGIS Maps for Office users can access a custom geocoder when creating a mapafter the geocoder has been created and published.

Note: To use a custom geocode service on Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Maps for Office requiresa hosting server on the portal.

To configure a custom geocode service, do the following:

    1. Using ArcGIS Desktop, create an address locator.

    2. Publish the locator as a service. On Portal for ArcGIS, publish the service directly to the Portal for ArcGIS hosting server.

    3. Add the locator URL to your ArcGIS utility services. The custom locator is ready to use with ArcGIS Maps for Office when you add a map layer from Excel. For detailedinformation, see Add a custom location type.

  • How do I know how many credits I'm using when geocoding or enriching my data?

When you use the geocoding or data enrichment features in ArcGIS Maps for Office, you'll be presented with the approximatenumber of credits required to complete the operation. When you choose Address, US City, or World City from the LocationType drop-down list, the estimated number of credits that will be charged to your account appears in the lower left corner of theAdd data from my spreadsheet pane.

The estimated credit consumption also appears on the confirmation pane.

When you enrich your data, the estimated number of credits appears in the Enrich layer pane.

Why doesn't my spreadsheet appear in the Add data from Excel wizard?

ArcGIS Maps for Office recognizes tables and named ranges and automatically adds those to the Add data from Excelwizard. If there are no tables or named ranges in your worksheet, you need to manually select a cell range.

I received an error message when signing in to ArcGIS Online.

ArcGIS Maps for Office uses an ArcGIS account that is registered as part of an organization's subscription. You cannot use anArcGIS Online personal account. If you try to sign in to ArcGIS Online with a personal account, the No ArcGIS subscriptionmessage appears. Contact your ArcGIS administrator to gain access to your organization, or sign up for a free trial of ArcGISOnline.

  • If I make a map in Excel, what happens when I send the spreadsheet to my colleagues? Will they see the map?

What your colleagues see depends on whether they have ArcGIS Maps for Office installed and whether they are signed in toArcGIS. Here's what your colleagues will see in various scenarios:• ArcGIS Maps for Office is installed and the user is signed in to ArcGIS—The map will be fully interactive and your colleagues

will have the ability to pan and zoom the map, add and remove layers, and work with the tools in the map. They will see thelayers they have access to and be able to perform actions that are allowed for the permissions that have been assigned tothem. Changes to the spreadsheet will be reflected in the map, and new rows will be geocoded (as long as your colleagueshave geocoding permissions within ArcGIS).

    • Add-in is installed but the user is not signed in to ArcGIS—Your colleagues will be able to pan and zoom the map as well asview attribute information in pop-ups for visible layers. Only publicly shared ArcGIS layers and layers created from the Excelspreadsheet will be visible. Map tools will not be available, and generally the map will be in a limited view-only mode.Changes made to spreadsheet data will be reflected in pop-ups, but new rows will not be geocoded until a named user signsin.

    • Add-in is not installed—A static image of the map will be shown for all anchored maps in the spreadsheet. Floating maps(maps are floating by default) will not be shown. To anchor a floating map so an image of it can be seen by everyone, usethe arrow control in the upper left corner of the map window.

My organization has a geocoder registered with ArcGIS. Can I use it with ArcGIS Maps for Office?

Yes, you can. When you add data to a map from Excel, click the Location Type drop-down arrow and choose More from thelist. You will find your custom geocoder (that has been registered with ArcGIS) at the top of the window that appears.

Can I add a custom basemap to the Basemap Gallery in ArcGIS Maps for Office?

Custom basemaps can be added to the group selected by the ArcGIS administrator as the Basemap Gallery group.

When I add a layer from ArcGIS Online that contains a large number of points, are all the points added to the map atonce?

No. When you add a layer to your map from ArcGIS Online, not all points are added to the map at the same time. In an effort tomaximize performance, ArcGIS Maps for Office adds feature points in batches, based on the visible map extent. As you zoomor pan across the map, points that will be visible in the new extent are added to the map.

Why doesn't my clustered layer display in ArcGIS Online?

Clustering is not supported in ArcGIS Online, so a layer that is clustered in ArcGIS Maps for Office will display as a point layerin the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer. If you share a map that contains a clustered layer then create a dynamic PowerPoint slideusing the shared map, the clustered layer will display as it does in ArcGIS Maps for Office in Excel, with clustering enabled.

Why doesn't ArcGIS Maps for Office recognize my PivotTable when adding data?

When adding data, the Add Data from Excel wizard attempts to recognize tables and named ranges in your spreadsheet. Ifpossible, it will also recognize existing PivotTables in the spreadsheet. If the PivotTable contains an unsupported data type orhas a hierarchy or more than one row label, the Add Data wizard will not recognize it.

  • Why isn't cell formatting preserved when sharing to ArcGIS Online?

Cell formatting, such as double or datetime, may not be preserved in pop-ups when sharing a map or layer to ArcGIS Online. In these cases, ArcGIS Maps for Office publishes the value in the cell, not the formatted string, so that additional analysis canbe performed on the value if desired.

Can I add a Bing basemap to my map?

ArcGIS Maps for Office does not provide a user interface to add Bing Maps. Bing Maps basemaps must be configured onlineby the administrator of your ArcGIS Online organization.
