The Six Kingdoms

ArchaebacteriaArchae - Archaic meaning ancient

Single celled

Prokaryotic – lack a nucleus

Live in extreme environmental conditions.

EubacteriaLive in soil, water, on or in the human body.

Familiar kind of eubacterium converts milk into yogurt.

Another kind causes pneumonia.

Archaebacteria and Eubacteria

ProtistaProtists – single celled or simple multicellularEukaryotes – contain a nucleus, organellesEvolved from ancient bacteria.Do not “fit” in any other kingdom

Examples: Protozoans – animal like Algae – plant like

FungiComplex, multicellularDo not photosynthesize.Absorb nutrients from substances in their

surroundings.Use digestive juices to break down

substances.

Examples : Molds Mushrooms

PlantaeEukaryotic – contain cell wallsVary in size and form.Make food through photosynthesisExposed to sunlight – found on land or in

water where sunlight can penetrate. Most living things get nutrients from plants.Plants are producers.Provide a habitat for other organisms.

AnimaliaComplex, multicellularLack cell wallsUsually move aroundRespond quickly to their environmentSpecialized sense organs.Dependent upon organisms from other

kingdoms.Plants – food sourceBacteria or fungi – recycle nutrients found in

dead organisms.
