"He also took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil. He placed it beside abundant waters; he set it like a willow. Then it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine with its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and yielded shoots and sent out branches.” Ezekiel 17:5-6

President 'sLetter The work of Catholic education has a great parallel in gardening. Of the

multiple references to gardening in Scripture, the above passage from

Ezekiel speaks to the Archbishop Murphy High School story. The founders

of our school planted the seed of a Catholic high school education in the

fertile soil of Snohomish County, in the heart of an abundant community

of supportive and engaged parents. The school started as a small sapling,

but its roots were strong and its growth remains steady, weathering the

ebbs and flows of the seasons. We continue to see our tree blossom as our

graduates leave this school and do amazing things here and beyond.

This year’s annual report, “Deepening Our Roots,” celebrates our growth

over the last year and it paves the path for what will come. Inside this book

is an overview of the accomplishments over the past year, so we can share

with you the fruits of our labor as a vibrant Catholic high school. The great

roots of this tree have enabled us to spread the branches of Christlike

leadership out into the world, and to continue this healthy and vibrant

growth for many years to come.

Thank you to all of you who have or will contribute to our growth. A tree

is only as strong as its roots, and it is evident from the commitment of so

many, that our roots continue to run deep and strong. God bless you all.

Forty Archbishop Murphy High School students and staff spent their spring vacation serving those impacted by the Oso landslide. On Thursday, April 24th, students and staff traveled to Oso to help families who lost friends and family members in the slide. Students cleaned yards in preparation for their loved ones' funeral services. This story details how two alums extended the branch to families in need.

When we showed up in Oso, we saw a small town that had been transformed

into a disaster relief zone. It was difficult to see buildings covered with

children’s drawings and messages of condolence and sorrow. Our group was

greeted warmly by relief staff, and after some explanation of the situation, we

were sent out to work with people who had lost family members in the tragic

landslide.

Our group was sent to the home of a woman

and child whose father was killed in the

tragedy. His family was left with the burden

not only of the loss of a husband and father,

but also of the work he used to do around

the house. We pulled weeds, mowed,

and cleaned windows as she extended

unbelievable kindness. Her daughter

brought snacks out to us as we worked, and

we were heartbroken to discover just how

central her father had been in the life of

their family.

Making a Difference in Oso

Because the father was the only member of the family who knew how to

operate the outdoor machinery, the mother and daughter talked about him

often during our day with them. We heard how he meant everything to his

family, and we were honored and humbled to serve those he had left behind.

After finishing our work outside, they invited us into their home. It was there

we realized just how much of a difference a few hours of our time could make

in the life of someone who truly needed our help.

Through this group service project, we found that communities are made

stronger by the people who are willing to work for something bigger than just

themselves. Our larger Washington state community stepped up to help those

affected by the landslide, and our AMHS community grew stronger as well.

We were blessed to serve those in need, and this was a service project that will

not soon be forgotten by either of us.

"We found that communities are made stronger by the people who are willing to work for something bigger than just themselves."

By Claudia Morales '13 and Jessica Lucas '13

Strengthening Our Community

We were very impressed with the school when we were there

last year catering the luncheon and we have always made a point to give

back to the communities we have businesses in. We are very happy

and proud to be in Mill Creek and always want to have a footprint in

helping out when we are able.

– Rusty Pelican Café (Title Sponsor, STAR Luncheon)

Emory’s on Silver Lake supports AMHS by investing in education

and the future of local youth.

– Emory’s (GIVE81 Annual Fund Sponsor)

Supporting the AMHS Annual Fund is important to me because the

education and opportunities I’ve received from this school have made it possible for me to thrive

in my career as a real estate agent. As an expression of my gratitude to the school, when I close a sale with

a client from the AMHS community, I give 5% from my commission to the Annual Fund. It makes me

happy to know I’m helping ensure that a student who wants the opportunity to attend this

school, has the financial support to do so. – Jen (Richardson) Bowman,

Class of 2000.

AMHS has been a place we have personally called

home. We’ve partnered with AMHS as parents supporting our

children’s education. After our children graduated, we still visited campus weekly to serve lunch.

– La Palmera(GIVE81 Annual Fund Sponsor)This past school year, AMHS grew

new partnerships, strengthened existing ones, and worked to better integrate the school into the community.

Each of these businesses' generosity has a direct impact on the students we serve by supporting tuition assistance, academic support, and faith formation.

These businesses are not only partnering with us, but are helping us live out our mission beyond our school walls.

As a local bank we understand the meaning of a ‘tight-knit

community’ and we strongly believe that giving back starts at home.  Archbishop Murphy

High School promotes academic excellence and service to others.  Coastal Community Bank is proud to support

educational opportunities that benefit our neighbors and build a stronger community.

– Coastal Community Bank

Buffalo Espresso opened for business in 1997,

not knowing at the time it's next door neighbor would be AMHS. What a true

blessing it has been to have such an outstanding academic, family orientated, and respected

leader of our community that welcomes all faiths. It's my honor to always support AMHS and tell

every new customer that I have someone you have to meet: "the Archbishop Murphy Family.”

– Stewart RobertsonCEO, Buffalo Espresso I & II

We believe in partnership and are proud to be a neighborhood gathering place for many in

the AMHS community whether it’s for our Trivia Nights, Alumni Board Meetings, or Happy Hour.

– Shawn O’Donnells American Grill & Irish Pub

Our company culture is tied directly to our own

Hoban family values. These were forged at home and through a rich

tradition of the Catholic education that continues to influence our family and

others through AMHS today. – Tom Hoban & Shawn Hoban, Owners

Coast Real Estate

Earthscapes NW supports AMHS because of the strong

commitment to education and Christian values which have a profound effect on the

lives of students and families. Go Wildcats!

Father Armando GuzmánIn 1999, Father Armando Guzmán felt called to Archbishop Murphy High School and took a job

as the school Chaplain. Over the last 15 years he has shared his gifts of light, spirituality, and harmony with the students and the community of Archbishop Murphy High School. He has

brought reverence to spaces that others saw as common, peace to students during times of need, and joy to a community through his gift of music.

June 21, 1986Armando is ordained at St. James Cathedral by Archbishop Hunthausen.

19991989

October 1999Fr. Armando, alongside Archbishop Brunett, celebrates the school’s first Mass on the campus. “We had to borrow almost everything for Mass. It’s amazing we were able to get it all done in time,” he says.

2003 2004 2007

Fr. Armando establishes the first chapel at Archbishop Murphy High School. Armando designs the altar and tabernacle stand. A friend gives him the tabernacle as a gift.

Permission is granted to keep the Blessed Sacrament in the school chapel.

September 2007 Close to 1,000 people attend the Heath Hall dedication ceremony, the largest dedication ceremony in school history. Father Armando and several other parish priests process through every building and bless all of the rooms in the school. Archbishop Brunett blesses the room in Heath Hall currently known as the Archbishop Brunett Conference Room. “It was a tangible representation of the tremendous support for the school,” Fr.
