¿Do we work to Architect Happiness? An exploration

“Everything around you was architected by another person. Whether or not they were aware of what they were doing. Whether or not they did a good job.[…] Information is a responsibility we all share.”

— Abby Covert

We wanted to explore how ‘Creators’ (any professional involved in designing, building and managing websites, products and services) relate to happiness and how they work for user/customer happiness.

People are NOT looking to make life more efficient and automated. People are looking for entertainment, relationships. So it's not about the functionality, it's about the experience.

Happiness is not formally on the agenda as a topic, but everything we do and design touches people lives and organisations.“

Perspectives

In the experience of many creators, companies do not seek "happiness" for their customers.

Companies and happiness

In your experience, do you think that business looks for happy customers?

Not always. They don't understand that happy customers are key for profitability.

Only sometimes. They don't care enough about customers.

Perspectives

“ Business is not explicitly asking for that. But they want happy customers, loyal customers, loyal employees... They don't use that vocabulary, but implicitly they do ask for that.

There are opposing views on companies and happiness. Looking at the goal, yes they look for it. Looking into the details, no, they don’t.

“ Most businesses put business goals ahead of making people happy. It's about extracting the maximum value and making lots of money. Because business culture doesn't define happiness as a goal by itself, it's hard to sell a project about "making people happy."

Companies and happiness

Page 28: Architecting Happiness: Exploring how we design, build and communicate for happy users and customers (English)

Creators still don’t feel companies understand the value of making a positive emotional impact.

WORLD IA DAY 2015 ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS - AN EXPLORATION 28

Companies should look for functional satisfaction and emotional happiness. And here is where many companies go wrong. They only go for functional satisfaction.

The majority of the processes/projects that I've worked on in the past were pain killers. We worked on the medicine that was stopping the pain.

Perspectives

The funny thing about happiness is that we don't use that word, but it makes a lot of sense. If you ask someone what is the higher, higher, higher goal that she/he is pursuing, the answer is 'happiness'. Why not use that when you create work?

Happiness at work

We should be happy when we work.

The problem with ordinary happiness is that it never lasts, because the objects of happiness don't last. A happy event is soon followed by a sad one, and shoes wear out. So, the happy "fix" is never permanent, so we keep looking.

The happiness that is a factor of enlightenment is not dependent on objects, but is a state of mind cultivated through mental discipline.

Beyond Frustration: 3 levels of happy design

Chisnell, D. (2010). Beyond Frustration: Three levels of happy design. UX Magazine. http://uxmag.com/articles/beyond-frustration-three-levels-of-happy-design

Mindfulnessin design is about a pleasing awareness. It's knowing that this is good, that this makes me happy. It's satisfying. You feel it in your body. As Norman suggests, it's visceral.

Flowby M. Csikszent-mihalyi. In his book, Flow, he describes a state that people enter when they are fully focused in which they experience immersion in a task or activity to the point where they lost track of time

Meaning comes from a feeling of fellowship, contributing, and making the world a better place. It's about harmony and, as Norman says, reflectiveness—because good things happen to you, you want to do good for others.
