Chapter I

The Problem and Review of Related Literature

Introduction

One of the most famous beautiful and historical churches in Manila is the San

Sebastian Church, also known as the Basilica Menor de San Sebastian. It is made popular by

being the only all-steel church in the hilippines and some say in !sia. "owe#er, there are

more aspects of the architectural design that San Sebastian Church has to offer.

!ccording to $alende %&''(), the Basilica Minore de San Sebastian is a fine

representati#e of the $othic re#i#al in the hilippines. *he basilica is mi+ed with th-

century inno#ations in church construction, architecture, and art. It takes pride as the only all-

steel basilica in the world.

pon entering the door, the #ast interior, warmly lit crystal chandeliers and light

entering from the church doors radiate a warm feel. On the sides, the animated colors of the

stained glass windows are truly remarkable. *hese were said to be directly imported from a

$erman steel glass firm, "enri Oidtmann Company %Conopio, &'/).

*he walls of the church were a mi+ of sand, gra#el and cement. *he interior of the

basilica are made of e+0uisite groined #aults, a true $othic architecture-style. Confessionals,

pulpit, altars and retablos represent fine $othic re#i#al, which were headed and designed by

rofessors from the !cademia d intura y 1ibu2a, 3oren4o 5ocha and 3oren4o $uerrero. *he

#aults display intricate trompe l6oeil paintings of saints and se#eral religious figures, an art

approach where the images create optical illusions. *ogether with their students, they

decorated and painted the columns, walls and ceiling which e+ude marble and 2asper

appearance. *he central part of the church %commonly called the na#e in $othic Christian

architecture) where the main high altar is located, rises to a height of twel#e meters from the

floor to the dome while measuring thirty-two meters to the tip of the spires. Beautiful spiral

staircases on the side of the church6s main entrance lead to the belfries and the choir loft

where a beautiful pipe organ is found %Conopio, &'/).

Conopio %&'/) also said that the magnificent interior of the church is graced by the

image of Our 3ady of Mount Carmel, a gift gi#en by the Carmelite sisters from Me+ico,

which is enshrined atop the mar#elous altar. *hroughout the natural occurrences and pre#ious

restorations, the image had sur#i#ed7 howe#er its original i#ory head was stolen some 89

years ago.

!ccording to Conopio %&'/), with these significant elements, San Sebastian Church is

indeed the hilippines6 treasure to behold. In general, the basilica remains its beauty and is

still preser#ed. !part from being a special architectural and historical interest, its splendor

and warmth ha#e placed it among the most belo#ed wedding churches in Manila.

*hus, the intention of the paper is to promote the architectural design of San Sebastian

Church to local and foreign tourists and for the church to become a church tourism in Manila.

Beshir %n.d.) stated that the idea of using a church as a tourist attraction is well known

*he architecture of cathedrals, basilicas and abbey churches is characterised by the

buildings large scale and follows one of se#eral branching traditions of form, function and

San Sebastian Church is under the care of *he Order of the !ugustinian 5ecollects,

who also operate a collegead2acent to the basilica. It is located at la4a del Carmen, at the

eastern end of 5ecto !#enue, in Huiapo, Manila%San Sebastian Church, &'D).

!ccording to 3ayug %&''(), in G&, Bernardino Castillo, a generous patron and a

de#otee of the 8rd-century 5oman martyr Saint Sebastian, donated the land upon which the

church stands. *he original structure, made of wood, burned in GD during a Chinese

uprising. Succeeding structures, which were built of brick, were destroyed by fire and

earth0uakes in 9D, 9G8, and 99' respecti#ely.

Significance of the Study

*he importance and purpose of this study is to promote the architectural design of

San Sebastian Church located in Huiapo, Manila to local and foreign tourists and the church

to become a church tourism in Manila. Its purpose is for the people to appreciate the good

works and architectural design of the church. *his study helps and benefits the society not

only to the locals of Manila but to the whole hilippines as well.

Scope and Limitations

*he scope of this study is the church of San Sebastian in Huiapo, Manila that has a

good architectural design. *his study co#ers the perception of the respondents to the

architectural design of the church, part of the church that interest the tourists, aspects of

architectural design and part of the church that interest the tourists, part of the church that

should be gi#en more emphasis by guides during actual tours, reasons why people go to San

Sebastian Church, the church to be included in the itinerary for tours in Manila, and

and inter#iew guide to gather data and information needed for the study. *he researcher

identified the respondents that will answer their 0uestions correctly. *he respondents are

local and foreign tourists that are #isiting or attending mass in San Sebastian Church and

people who are working in the parish office. *he researcher conducted a sur#ey and an

inter#iew and tabulated the results. !fter the sur#ey and the inter#iew, the researcher

interpreted the data.

Inc. are organi4ing a fundraising e#ent to help in restoration of San Sebastian church and the

respondent is recommending that many people should support the e#ent. *he parish is

training locals on how to tour tourists in San Sebastian church to showcase its e+traordinary

structure and its historical background. *he respondents also recommended that the tour

guides orient the tourists well so they won6t destroy any of the church6s property.

Based on the results, the researcher found out that the respondents6 perceptions on the

architectural design of San Sebastian Church are uni0ue and attracti#e. *he aspects of the

painting and the rose and stained glass windows of San Sebastian Church. *he parts of the

church that interest them are the altar, church interior and windows. *he parts of the church

interior, altar and windows7 and the reasons why people go to San Sebastian Church are to

attend mass and to pray, and to see its architectural design.

*he respondents supposed that the San Sebastian church should be included in the

itinerary for tours in Manila because of its architectural design and historical background of

the church. *he respondents also said that San Sebastian Church, the all-steel church, needs

to be repaired and restored to retain its beauty and to pre#ent the church from total

destruction.

Conopio %&'/) stated that one of the historical churches in Manila that e+udes great

beauty and architecture is located in Huiapo, Manila. *he light blue-green basilica that stands

in the busy end of Claro M. 5ecto Street doesn6t entirely gi#e off an ancient feel7 howe#er, its

color emphasi4es its striking features P two open towers with pyramidal spires, lou#ered

the church6s architectural background.

surrounded by rows of old houses in Huiapo is a structure ha#ing connections with the world

the thing that makes the church uni0ue and e+traordinary.

8. *he respondents recommended that the tour guides should orient the tourists well so they

won6t destroy any of the church6s property.

Sebastian Basilica Con#ersation and 1e#elopment :oundation Inc. are organi4ing to fund

the restoration of San Sebastian church.

D. I recommend that San Sebastian Church should conduct an information campaign to

promote the significance of San Sebastian Church6s architectural design and structure in

addition to their training program for the locals and their fundraising e#ent.

G. I recommend that the church6s #entilation to be impro#ed because I noticed that it really

gets hot inside the church and all the church goers ha#e to use a hand fan while inside the

church. If there will be a lot of people in the church and it gets really hot inside, people

will ha#e a hard time staying inside the church and en2oying the church6s architectural

design and structure

(. I also recommend that this study should be a basis of a tourism program for tour or tra#el

agencies. *he San Sebastian Church is a church with good architectural design and it is a

masterpiece.
