This portfolio is a story displaying the two projects we have worked on in this second year of architecture at UWE. The projects spanned throughout the year and were both situated in Fowey, Cornwall.

The rst brief was to design Twilight Homes in a specic site of 500sqm. These residen-tial homes are to accomodate elderly people of ages 60 onwards who rely heavily on accesibility, safety, social interaction and functionality among many other factors. A minimum of 4 units had to be designed.

OOn our second project, again, we were given a specic site and it was situated north of the rst site and just above the centre of the town. For this project we had to propose a design for a paper factory as well as renovating an existing listed building on the site.

Twilight Homes: a residential home for elderly people which sways from the conventional retire-ment home by creating a more positive, well design and functional building adapted to the needs of the elderly.

PROJECT 2 - PAPERWORKS FACTORYJeanette Beiring, a local entrepreneur has decided to invest £10m to develop a facility that will manufacture a selec-tion of ‘posh’ papers for the private and local market.

This facility will include: Paper Plant, Museum/Gallery and a Small Shop. The intention is to renovate the existing sta-tion master’s house and build a new manufacturing space adjacent to and physically linked with the existing building. This is a complex proposal as it involves both conservation of an historic house as well as provisions for a contemo-pary framed building design for the manufacture of china clay and its use in the paper manufacturing process.

Requirements:

PROJECT 1 - TWILIGHT HOUSINGThe task is to design a facility for people of ages 60 onwards. This facility can provide for those who are retired but are still very active whilst responding to their ever changing requirements as they get older. The challenge of this pro-ject is that we were designing living spaces for elderly couples who are eligible to move in and remain until they are unable to look after themselves and have to move to some kind of care home, therfore the unit must evolve with them in some sorts, or needs to make provisions for future needs.

Perception of FoweyThe diagram illustrates my perception of the town of Fowey.

After visiting Fowey on a University organised trip to ana-lyse the sites, we were asked to create a diagram to rep-resent our response of the town. I saw Fowey as a mina-ture yet beautiful and historic town. That town was right in the centre and as you further yourself from the quay, there is a sudden outbust of contemporary buildings which has been fed by tourism.

SECTOR MAPPING

From mapping out Fowey, analysis shows that the majority of the area is feeding into resi-dential areas, followed by civil/public, commercial and finally cultural/religious/historical areas. I wish to create a project that attempts to integrate these sectors into one. A resi-dence to house the elderly, a communal area for the residents and company to enjoy social interactions whilst staying active by potentially creating a commercial/buisness area to sell homegrown products or provide a space to teach or entertain.

ROAD HIERARCHY

Wether it is pedestrians or vehicles, by looking at how a town circulates you can learn how to adapt that factor to your building to work with it. In this case, Fowey is a small town with narrow roads, usu-ally one way streets.

Understanding context is important when designing a building, it must work to intergrate into it, and working in a similar colour scheme as the rest of the town is one of the aspects i want to incorporate in the design of Twilight Home

MATERIALITY

When designing a building to fit into a specific context, in this case Fowey, it is important to analyse the surrounding environment. Fowey is a historic town and a new building in its landscape must be studied to fit in that scene. In this modern age, with the evolving differences in style and taste, the building design needs to be contemporary and innovative, and does not always fit in the context. Looking at the materiality of Fowey can help create a seamless flow between two buildings, again, this can only be done to a certain extent. Here i have displayed photographic evidence of the spectrum of materials used and will be selecting a few to be represented in my design.

MATERIAL DETERIORATION

Humid salty air caused by the sea can accelerate corrosion, particularly on Iron, avoiding using this material extensively would prove beneficial. Fur-thermore, south facing aspects are susceptible to sun bleaching. On newer installations, there is a sensitivity to water discolouration, salt leaching as well as sun bleaching. With modern materials and pand products, coatings can be applied to de-crease the deterioration process. Regular paint-ing, seasonal wood treatments and applying new coatings will be necessity

LIGHTING

This is relevant information when designing a building as it ap-plies different factors, such as insulation, materials used and in this case, the surface area of glass (windows) of the building. Larger windows means greater absorption of sunlight to light the interiors. Furthermore, due to the relatively cold temperature throughout the year, the minimum would be adopting double glazed windows, triple glazed would be beneficial but cost be-comes a factor.

The 500sqm site should be divided into four equal portions for each resident. Idealy, 125sqm should cover the ground area of the residential building and private garden.

This diagram displays the thresholds of the site, deliniated by neighbouring buildings, the esplanade and the estuary. The site must work to emphasise the landscape to the east as it looks upon the estuary, Polruan - the colorful town on the other side of the bank and your view terminates on the horizon water of the sea.
