W hen a pusher tag axle is lifted, there can be excessive weight transfer. This weight transfer would provokeextreme sagging on the truck and/or trailer suspension springs, resulting in premature spring failure and

in the case of steering axle suspensions, steering problems.

[ Canadian Loadshare kits can be installed between the axle beam and the vehicle frame rails or leaf springs. ]

Two air springs are installed on either side of the vehicle centerline to keep the vehicle from sagging to a specificside. This is accomplished by supplying the air bellows with a controlled air pressure. These pressurized bellowsare now capable of transferring a portion of the vehicle weight directly to the axle(s) center. The use of such anair bellow system will keep the truck/trailer frame from sagging in instances where the weight is shifted, such asunder braking or load transfer when lifting auxiliary axles.

In the case of excessive weight on one side of the vehicle (for instance, snow plow trucks equipped with wingblades), a second air pressure control system can be used to supply a specific air pressure to the proper side ofthe vehicle.

Various systems have been tested under the most rugged conditions and in all cases a 100% improvement invehicle performance was observed. Listed below are several benefits noticed when using the air spring setup.

The Benefits of an Air Helper Spring System

Purpose of Dual Bag Installation

Application 2 shows an air bellow systeminstalled between the suspension axle and thetruck frame.

The nuts on the U-bolts must be torqued to manufacturer’s specifications.

The Loadshare system comes complete with air springs, mounting hardware, brackets, pressurecontrol system and installation instructions. The air springs and brackets are designed to fit in the openspace between the axle centerline, spring package and the bottom of the vehicle frame, as illustrated inApplications 1 and 2.

There are several possibilities when considering the air spring system operation or control.System 1 is supplied as standard equipment.

System 1

Regulated air pressure is supplied to the air bellows. This controlled or regulated air pressure will fill each bellow,extending it in length. Therefore, as the air spring is located between the axle and the vehicle frame, the trucksuspension will be leveled to the proper height. If the vehicle was loaded with payload, the air bellows wouldtransfer part of the weight directly to the axle and through the tires to thepavement. Therefore, this will help to reduce the load transferred through the leaf springs and shackles, reducingthe amount of wear on these particular components.

The air pressure is controlled by means of a pressure regulator which can be adjusted manually by the operatoror truck driver. Pressurized air is supplied to one side of the regulator and the controlled air is released into thesystem. This can be accomplished by use of a knob or lever on the regulator unit. The required air pressure canbe read on a pressure gauge located in the system. The required air pressure is supplied by the vehicle’s stan-dard air compressor system as outlined. This control unit is usually installed in the vehicle dashboard.

The second system consists of two air pressure control kits designed to operate each air bellowindependently. The reason for such a system is to maintain proper ride height when one side of thevehicle carries more load than the other, such as snow plow applications. In this case, the air spring on the moreheavily loaded side requires more air pressure to level the vehicle frame.

System 3

This particular air spring system is controlled using a load leveling valve installed between the vehicle frame mem-ber and the axle(s). A height controlling lever and rod arrangement is installed with one side connected to thevehicle axle and the other attached to the load leveling valve. As the truck framelowers due to loading, the axle will tend to move upwards. This can be caused by road imperfections or vehicleweight. As the axle raises through its range of motion, the lever motion adjusts the leveling valve, and the airpressure to the air springs is increased or decreased, modifying spring length and, therefore, frame height. Theload leveling air valve is attached to the axle via a connecting rod prior to valveinstallation. It is very important to establish the correct vehicle ride height.

System Components

The mounting hardware is supplied by Canadian Loadshare® for Firestone. The system is designed to fit variousapplications and the air springs are made to fit specific applications.
