Area Ministry 5 May 2016
MESSENGER Congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Central States Synod
Seminarian to Graduate
For the past four years, Austin English of Reformation has been studying
and experiencing what it means to be a pastor through theology and Bible classes, a congregational
internship, and other learning and service opportunities. Through all
of these seminary experiences, he has been equipped for a lifetime of
ministry. His home congregation, Reformation, has held him in
prayer and encouraged him through financial support. Austin will
graduate from Trinity Seminary in Ohio on Saturday, May 21 and
has been called by the congregations of Grace Lutheran Church and
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Oakes and Cogswell, North Dakota. He
will be ordained at Reformation in the near future, and will begin his
ministry as an ordained pastor in North Dakota shortly! In Austin's
words, "To God be all the glory." (posted on Facebook May 2)

Team and oversaw the work of the stewardship and mission tables as well as the
grant process for new and renewing congregations through the ELCA.
Pastor Ron Glusenkamp will also be a presenter.
God of Tempest, God of
Whirlwind God of tempest, God of whirl-wind, as on Pentecost de-scend! Drive us out from shel-tered comfort; past these walls your people send! Sweep us into costly service, there with Christ to bear the cross, there with Christ to bear the cross!
God of blazing, God of burn-ing, all that blocks your pur-pose, purge! Through your church, Christ’s living Body, let your flaming Spirit surge! Where deceit conceals injus-tice, kindle us to speak your truth, kindle us to speak your truth!
God of earthquake, God of thunder, shake us loose from lethargy! Break the chains of sin asunder, for earth’s healing set us free! Crumble walls that still divide us; make us one in Christ our Lord, make us one in Christ our Lord!
God of passion, God unsleep-ing, stir in us love’s restless-ness! Where the people cry in anguish, may we share your heart’s distress. Rouse us from content with evil; claim us for your kingdom’s work, claim us for your kingdom’s work!

Pr. Ron Glusenkamp at Synod Assembly
Pastor Ron Glusenkamp will be at the Synod Assembly in his
capacity of director of Always Being Made New: The Cam-
paign for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and
will lead the workshop on the Always Being Made New Cam-
paign. St. Paul’s-Wichita will welcome the Rev. Ron
Glusenkamp to their pulpit on Sunday June 5. Pastor Glusenk-
amp was an intern and then an Associate Pastor at St. Paul’s in
the 1980s before he was called to serve Immanuel in Westport
and then Gethsemane in St. Louis in the Central States Synod.
“Amigos de Cristo”
During the Children’s Message on May 1 at Cross of Glory
the kids led the congregation in singing
"Amigos de Cristo - We're Friends of the
Lord" and then Pastor Larry Cross dedi-
cated the quilt which they tied during the
Sunday School hour to be sent to Lu-
theran World Relief when the truck
comes through in
October. The mis-
sion statement at
Cross of Glory is
"We serve in
God's world." and
these kids show
they not only understand the statement, but they act on it too.
Shoes for Breakfast Guests
During the month of April, the Youth from Gloria Dei col-
lected tennis shoes from Area 5 as a service project. They are
happy to report that 105 pairs of shoes were donated, and many
of them were even new!! The shoes were cleaned, given new
laces if needed, and then distrib-
uted at the St. Paul’s breakfast
on Saturday, April 30th. All of
the recipients were very grate-
ful! The Youth would like to
thank everyone who donated
and contributed their time for
this project! It would! It would
not have been as successful
without everyone’s help!
End of Activity Year Celebrations
Emanuel will celebrate another completed year of Wednes-
day evening activities on May 11 with special games and ac-
tivities and lots of food! St. Paul’s-Wichita will celebrate
with a “Picnic on the Porch” after worship on May 22. At
Reformation the Christian Education theme has been living
in hope, and they plan a celebration on May 15 during the
Sunday School hour. During the past year they have sup-
ported the Wichita Children’s Home with their Sunday
School offerings, and cele-
brated with the Home as they
moved into their new loca-
tion this year. Gloria Dei
had an “Almost Cinco de
Mayo” party for children and youth musicians on May 4. The
congregation was invited to join in and attend the Mexican
potluck. The children and youth played Mexican bingo
(Loteria) followed by the annual piñata fun.
Senior Recognition
A number of the Area 5 churches are recognizing their high
school graduates in May with several celebrating on May 8.
Reformation’s Senior Celebration included a reception and
recognition at worship for seniors Lily Burgoyne, Nathan
Burgoyne, Jacob Camenzind, Mark Ca-
menzind, Abby Davis and Morgan Win-
ters. Trevor Kemp, Emily Torrey, Jared
Jones and Klanci Wiggins (right) were
honored at Christ-Eureka on May 8.
Christ-Wichita celebrated with their
graduating high school seniors Nathaniel
Becker and Matthew Steinert. They had
their Senior Blessing Ritual at the late
service and they had displays set up be-
tween services sharing some of their accomplishments and
memorabilia and they had special refreshments.

May 15 with Noah Becker confirming his faith. He will be
sharing his faith statement with the congregation and there
will be the Laying on of Hands. St.
Paul’s-Wichita will also celebrate
Confirmation with Corbin Kallman
affirming his baptism on May 15.

Area 5 Leaders Attend “Palooza”
About 30 leaders from Area Ministry 5 churches attended the
Area Ministry 5 “Palooza” held Sunday April 24 at Reforma-
tion. The Rev.
Susan Candea,
Bishop Roger
Gustafson and the
Rev. Keith Hohly
of Synod Staff
led 4 workshops
at which those
attending learned
from each other
and the Staff. On
Monday rostered leaders met with the staff again - one of the
things they discussed was adaptive changes they have made.
Pictured here is the Rev. Susan Candea leading those attending
on Sunday in song.
Youth Representatives Needed for Synod Assembly
June 2-3 Know a youth in your congregation who would like to
be more involved? Youth are the future of our church. . .which is
why it is so important that they are included in all aspects of the
church. By electing a youth representative, you will give them a
voice and give your congregation an extra vote. They will partici-
pate in different aspects of the assembly, enjoy fun activities, and
have an opportunity to have lunch with the Bishop. Your youth rep
should be a voting member from age 14–18. Got questions?
Please contact Hannah Demaree at [email protected]. To
register visit the Synod Assembly page: http://www.css-elca.org/

celebration afterwards. A beautiful
new altar made by people of Mision
San Juan de Dios was first used Sunday April 17th. Another
community event was hosting an AA gathering in April. The
cleaning co-op is slowly gain-
ing customers and the planting
season has begun at the Com-
munity Garden. The Mision
appreciates the financial support
including Easter Season offerings sent from several Area Minis-
try 5 Congregations. Worship is each Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at

United Methodist Church. One of Brookside’s multi-talented
members both plowed the community garden area and got the
XP laptop to talk to the projector used in the Zumba classes
which are going strong and are a great outreach for the growing
congregation. Pastor Ivan is looking forward to getting a Church
Council formed. The next meeting working toward that organ-
