Area, Perimeter and

Distributive Property with Cheese-Its

Area, Perimeter and

Distributive Property with Cheese-Its

What You Get: • Cheese-It Area Activity- Students use crackers to find the area of given plane figures. Each cracker is equal to one square unit. •Cheese-It Perimeter Activity- Students use crackers to find the perimeter of given plane figures. Each cracker side length is equal to one unit. • Make Your Own- Students make their own plane figure with crackers and then find its area and perimeter. • Area and Distributive Property Activity- In Part 1 students create an array using their crackers. For Part 2 students will divide the array or area model from Part 1 to make two new arrays (distributive property). • Area Work Mats- Students will recognize that area is additive by composing and decomposing area models. Crackers not needed- can be done with other manipulatives or drawings. • Area of Rectilinear Figures Activity- Students create a rectilinear shape using crackers. Students will find the area of the rectilinear shape by decomposing it into 2 rectangular figures and then finding the area of each and adding to find the total area. • Area of Rectilinear Figures Activity- same as above but can be completed without crackers. Use other manipulatives or drawings.

Cheese-It Perimeter! Name

Directions: Use your crackers to find the perimeter of each plane figure. Then write an addition sentence for each. *Remember Perimeter is the measurement around the outside of a plane figure!*

Directions: Use your crackers to make your own plane figure. Sketch your plane figure below and record your figure’s area and perimeter along with a multiplication and addition sentence.

Make Your Own!

P= ____

Addition Sentence: ____________________

A= ____

Multiplication Sentence: ____________________

Area and Distributive Property Directions: Use your crackers to make an array. Sketch it below. Find the area and write a multiplication sentence for your model.

PART 1

____ x ____= ____

A= ____

area model #1 area model #2 total area

(___x___) + (___x___)= ____ A= ____

PART 1

Next, divide your cracker array from Part 1 into two smaller arrays. They do not have to be equal. Sketch them below. Write the equations for each new area model.

PART 2

You just did distributive property!!!

Area and Distributive Property

____ x ____= ____

____________=____

A= ____

Create an area model using an array. Write the multiplication and repeated addition sentence.

area model #1 area model #2 total area

(___x___) + (___x___)= ____

A= ____

PART 1

Next, divide your array from Part 1 into two smaller arrays. They do not have to be equal. Write the equations for each new area model.

You just did distributive property!!!

Area of Rectilinear Figures

Area 1: ___x___ = ___ Area 2: ___x___ = ___

____ +____ = ___ Area1 Area 2 Area of the Rectilinear Figure

Directions: Create a rectilinear figure by creating 2 rectangular arrays out of your crackers. To find the area, separate the figure into 2 rectangles and then add the areas of each to find the area of the whole.
