Argeville: The Art of Senses

Argeville began business in Mougins (in the Maritim Alps region) in

1932. Initially, a traditional, local manufacturer of natural flower prod-

ucts, the company is now dealing internationally with various clients

in the food-processing and cosmetic industries. Discover how METTLER

TOLEDO helps to ensure daily high quality scent manufacturing.

Quality First Argeville’s development has made signifi-cant progress during the last ten years. In addition to the creation of a European laboratory specializing in extraction, the company has developed its R&D skills and purchased advanced technology equipment including formulation assistance tools. The multi-step quality control system used dur-ing manufacturing includes a precise or-ganoleptic examination, vapour zone chro-matography and several physicochemical analyses. This system creates computerized data sheets for each type of raw material and allows a summary of their use, their conservation and composition quality.

Enhanced Physicochemical AnalysesDensity, refractive index and color ana-

lyses are critical and tedious. These mea-surements were previously carried out by chemistry technicians with a non-auto-mated density meter, a refractometer and a spectrocolorimeter. These procedures were time-consuming, used up a great number of samples and had a high manual error rate during the capture of results on the AS 400 server. The company’s response capacity was clearly reduced whilst client demands became ever more demanding.

METTLER TOLEDO’s Solution: The LiQC SystemArgeville called upon METTLER TOLEDO’s problem solving expertise and a new measuring chain was installed including a DR40 Refractometer linked to a SC30 Sample Delivery Unit, a Power Purge Unit (PPU) and a colorimeter all connected to

the server through the LiQC multi-devices software. Bernard Soulier, director of raw material quality control, could quickly measure the benefits of the new measur-ing chain, “Where we needed a 12 ml sample to only measure colour, we can now carry out density, refractive index and colour measurements simultaneously with the same quantity and still re-use the sample", says Mr. Soulier. He adds, “In practice, the measuring chain works from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and analyzes about 150 samples. Each sample is analyzed for no more than 5 minutes thanks to the PPU which ensures the fastest drying.”

The newly installed measuring chain in- cludes a DR40 Refractometer linked to a SC30 Sample Delivery Unit, a Power Purge Unit and a Colorimeter.

Argeville is originally from Mougins. Several laboratories can be found on site.

Mr. Soulier was also impressed by the system’s user-friendliness. He adds, “The analyses are now completed by produc-tion staff rather than by laboratory tech-nicians.”

The LiQC system also guarantees data security. The locked keyboard and the restricted access bypass errors resulting from data capture and interpretation of results. Finally, the chain is installed on the production and conditioning site, some distance from the control labora-tory. “This saves us a huge amount of analysis time!”, concludes Mr. Soulier.

The Instrument of ChoiceOil in water formulas are light liquids or lotions that do not feel heavy on the skin. The majority of the formula is wa-ter which may evaporate on the skin and leave a small amount of oil. Water in oil formulas are heavy, greasy products con-sisting mostly of oil. Generally, water in oil products are developed for skin that has a good water content but requires more oil from a moisturizing product.

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is an excellent tool for analyzing the moisture content of cosmetic skin creams. The results shown in the figure (right) were measured using the METTLER TOLEDO TGA/DSC 1 and evaluated using STARe Excellence software.

Samples of oil in water (o/w) creams with different water contents were heated from 20 °C to 200 °C at a heating rate of 2 K/min in a nitrogen atmosphere. The TGA curves indicate that all creams, with the exception of sample C, show a sig-nificant weight loss between 30 °C and 140 °C. The weight loss is caused by the evaporation of volatile components, espe-cially water.

Moisture in Cream Reliably Measured

Skin moisturizing products are developed and manufactured to target

different areas of the body. They consist of two basic formulas: oil in

water and water in oil. Analyzing the moisture content of skin moistur-

izing creams is a key aspect in end product quality control. It also

helps to ensure that the end product is suitable for its intended and

marketed use.

The TGA/DSC 1 is a valuable instrument for product quality control within the cos-metics industry. It provides excellent and reliable thermogravimetric measurement performance and high temperature accu-racy. With the addition of the sample ro-bot, hermetically sealed crucibles can be pierced immediately prior to measuring. This unique feature prevents the sample taking up or losing moisture between weigh-in and measurement. The TGA/DSC 1 also has the added benefit of simul-taneous calorimetric analysis, which is of great benefit to cosmetics manufacturers.

Ideal SolutionsFor Perfect Formulations

Formulation is a precise art requiring both high weighing accuracy

and the careful control of a large number of ingredients.

METTLER TOLEDO’s weighing solutions ensure the correct mix every

time.

Let the Balance GuideThe built-in application available on all XP/XS Balances provides step-by-step instructions to guide the users through formulation procedures. The color-coded SmartTrac weighing guide ensures all component substances are weighed to within specified tolerances. Barcode read-ers can be used for sample and ingredi-ent identification eliminating transcrip-tion errors and making the whole process much faster. LabX™ software provides ul-timate flexibility in order to design work-flows that exactly match individual SOPs whilst processing and storing all data – a big plus when dealing with complex mixes of ingredients!

Accessorize and SimplifyA range of accessories are available to help users work more ergonomically with in-creased convenience and safety:

The two SmartSens sensors built in to all XP Balances can be individually pro-grammed to allow hands-free balance operation which is perfect for situations where hands may become easily soiled. The remote ErgoSens sensors offer hands-free functionality for XS Balances and pro-vide up to two further hands-free options for XP Balances.

Mounting the terminal at eye-level on a stand behind the balance makes it much easier to read and frees up valuable bench space. The Bluetooth printer can be locat-ed away from the balance, even in another office, to avoid vibration and contamina-tion issues whilst ensuring recipes are fully documented and traceable.

Magnetic stirrers are often used when the quality of a formulation is dependent on thorough mixing throughout the addition of ingredients. The standard weighing pan can be replaced with the magnetic pro-tection shield weighing pan to eliminate

any magnetic interference from the stirrer.METTLER TOLEDO aims to make working processes as simple as possible in order to ensure the perfect mix is achieved every time!

Perfumes made in Italy has been a truly successful story spreading

optimism with an operating commercial network spanning from Italy to

Russia and being amongst the best 100 companies in the province of

Milan. The beginning, however, was not so bright.

GRC Parfum – a Company in Full SwingIn 1998, plans were afoot to close the site with production transferred to other countries; a development not at all to the satisfaction of Silvano Corlazzoli. Coura-geously, he made a management buyout and purchased the factory. Renamed GRC Parfum, the now family owned company tripled its sales from 1998 to 2007 and made huge investments into plant in-frastructure and staff with the latter, ac-cording to Corlazzoli, being one of the main assets of the company. Devoted to continuous innovation, operator safety and progress, the newest production site is highly automated. 33 km of steel tubing transport more than 1600 different raw materials to the mixing machine which fabricates around one million kilograms of final products annually. These produc-tion conditions require a finely tuned

quality control system and equipment that can easily deal with the continuous flow of test samples.

Instruments that Fulfill RequirementsDensity and refractive index determina-tions are the two most commonly used values to monitor the quality of incom-ing and outgoing goods and GRC Parfum relies on the METTLER TOLEDO DR40 combined meter with sample automation for this task. This benchtop instrument successfully fulfills the requirements of modern quality laboratories with ease. Small sample quantities in tightly closed vials are placed onto the sample changer. The analysis is then started, the measure-

ment values retrieved and the whole sys-tem cleaned automatically. Other quality parameters, such as pH, conductivity and color measurements can easily be in-cluded into the sample loop saving pre-cious time and sample substance. In the case of GRC Parfum, the measured values are directly exported to a LIMS system using LIQC software which greatly im-proves data handling security. "’Made in Italy’ is highly estimated in the world of perfume – a recognition of our quality", says Letizia Corlazzoli, responsible logistics and acquisition. Similarly, METTLER TOLEDO is esteemed for its amazing solutions in the analytical world.

Preparation of standard solutions is a routine task in the cosmetics

or flavor & fragrances industries. This critical procedure is performed

several times each day and must be done with care and precision

as so much further work depends upon the accuracy of the solution.

With the One Click Standard Preparation Package, standard solutions

can now be easily prepared in a fraction of the usual time. Full user

guidance is provided and all calculations and documentation are com-

pleted automatically.

One Click™ Standard PreparationPowered by LabX™

The challenge for accuracyA simple solution can take fifteen minutes or more to prepare due to the time spent on preparation, calculations, weighing and documentation. Error can be easily introduced into the procedure via tran-scription error, incorrect calculations and dosing difficulties.

Performing calculations correctly is es-sential to produce a final concentration within required tolerances. However, the procedure of copying figures from the balance to a calculator or spreadsheet is tiresome and prone to error. Dosing can be tricky when using weighing paper or

Simplicity with One Click WeighingThe standard preparation procedure is started with one touch on the balance touchscreen. The user simply follows the step-by-step instructions on the balance and LabX takes care of all the rest. Steps 1-5 illustrate how easy it is to prepare a standard solution in just over one minute – a dramatic difference to the traditional method.

The user inputs the required concentra-tion and all calculations are performed automatically; transcription error and incorrect formulae are no longer a worry. The balance tells the user how much sub-stance is required. Dosing is made easy by the ErgoClip dedicated flask holder which allows dosing straight into the flask – no more fiddly weighing paper. Any spilled sample falls into the tray below the holder and has no influence on the weighing process. The SmartTrac weighing guide provides help for weighing-in the correct amount; the weighing bars turning from red to green when the weight is within tol-erance. The user confirms when dosing is completed and the final concentration is calculated automatically. A green results screen indicates at a glance that the con-centration is within specified tolerances. A

weighing boats. Any spilled sample will generate errors in the final concentration and it is often difficult to be certain that no sample remains on the paper. Care must be taken to write all the solution details clearly and correctly on the label for the flask. Ensuring that all informa-tion has been recorded is necessary for full traceability not only of the solution but also of all work based upon it. This takes a lot of time and mistakes can be easily made.

One Click Standard Preparation powered by LabX™ eliminates these problems making the whole process significantly faster and worry-free.

Throughout the procedure, LabX™ auto-matically stores all data securely in a cen-tral database ensuring full traceability. A report can be printed automatically at the end of the process; it can even be sent to a printer outside the laboratory. Results are easily accessed to print further reports as required.

LabX™ contains a built-in method tem-plate for preparing a standard solution and the Method Designer allows the tem-plate to be customized according to users’ precise needs. New methods can also be created from scratch. Some general report templates are also included for ease-of-use and the Report Designer offers users the opportunity to create personalized re-
