ON THE COVER: Too good not to take a photo, these ladies all happened to be wearing a similar shade of pink during the last Pickleball Morning Mixer held in August.
On November 8, The Arlington Mill Senior Advisory Committee held its first Fall Festival on the 5th floor. There was a live DJ, fes-tive food choices and great games.
December means holidays, and the holidays aren’t the same with-out seasonal music. This month we are excited to welcome some great musicians to the center for performances that will include music from different cultures. The Army Band Trio returns to the center on Wednesday, Decem-ber 13 at 10:30am. This group, accompanied by a baritone sax-ophone, trombone, and clarinet, compose and perform various pieces that are meant to invoke deeper thoughts. A music thera-pist also accompanies the group to discuss each piece though ac-tive listening with the audience. Participation is encouraged, but you can come just to listen and enjoy if you prefer. The Winstons visit Arlington Mill Senior Center for the first time on Thursday, December 21, at 11am. This group is locally famous for performances that include classic Motown hits. Come and en-joy a great performance.
Arlington Mill Senior Center will soon be offering two new pro-grams starting in January: a new drop-in Open Art Studio and a English Conversation Class for non-native English speakers. If you or someone you know is interested, please call the main cen-ter line to claim your spot, as space is limited.
Arlington Mill Senior Center recently launched a new program entitled “Knitting at Night” , a social group that welcomes anyone interested in crochet, knitting, or any other needle craft. There are many knitting groups throughout the county, however none of them meet in the evening. Group members range from beginner to experienced, and volunteer Kim Luberto is happy to welcome and assist any newcomers. The group started strong on Thursday, July 5 with about 5 members, and hopes to grow. The group meets every Thursday evening at 6:30pm.
We are so excited to welcome a new Line Dancing class to its new permanent time frame of Thursday Afternoons, 1-2pm. Line Dancing is a popular recreational activity among the 55+. It is easy for beginners, lots of fun and no partner is needed. Suzie Pratt and Judi Garth will welcome and instruct, and there is no fee associated. We will see you out on the dance floor!

But what’s the Difference?
OPEN FORBUSINESS
Chances are if you have been by the center lately you’ve noticed that the Arlington Mill Gymnasium has been closed for repairs. If you’re a pickleball player, you have might even be excited to see the improvements that have been long awaited. What you may not know is that even though the repairs have meant a temporary closure, there were also significant improvements made to the gym based off feedback received from the 55+ pickleball community. Read on to find out what changes have been made.
Stronger Floors = Better SurfacesSince the floor had to be replaced, a stronger, more durable type of wood was chosen to better resist the sports the gym accommodates. From soccer balls to hockey sticks, this floor it tough and willing to take the abuse. This means that the floor will hold up better over time, and the surface will be more ideal for seniors utilizing the gym.
Darker Lines = Better Viability With the floor replacement, pickleball players were given the option to change the original line color of the courts. Considerations for the color were based on the contrast compared to other lines, the lighting in the gym and floor color. The pickleball community was polled during several events to determine what the best choice of line color
film that limits the amount of light that comes though each window pane. As designated by the arrows, a significant dif-ference is noticeable between the panes that have treatment and those that have not yet been treated. A harsh white glare is reduced to a cool blue transparent reflection. The remain-der of the panes to the right will be complete in time for the Pickleball Mixer on December 1.
Pictures don’t always do justice, so we invite you to come see the changes in person. If you play picklball, you can stop by during 55+ Pickleball Open Play which occurs weekly. See the activity calendar on page 7 for hours and court availabil-ity.
New to Pickleball? Join us Monday mornings for pickleball welcoming hour, a safe space for absolute beginners.
Take our Quick SurveyWe want to hear from you how you do or would like to use the gymnasium. Whether its other sports, fitness classes, or more pickleball hours, we want to maximize the use of this space for se-niors during pickleball hours. would be. Through several interviews, pick-leball players unanimously chose a dark red color to stand out against the lighter color of the floor. The contrast was also ideal to counter the reflections in the gym.
Tinted Windows = Reduced GlarePerhaps the most significant change to take place is the addition of the window tinting in the gym to reduce glare. This has been request-ed specifically for pickleball players at Arling-ton Mill Senior Center. In the photo taken above on November 20, workers install special
