Welcome to the December Edition of the Winster Village Magazine

T his year, it has been 100 years since the armistice in the first World War. It was humbling to see so many people

gathering together to remember the sacrifice that the fallen have made for us. Living in peaceful times is a gift for us and our children, may they never experience times of such conflict again. Peace has been symbolized in many shapes, such as in the white dove, and a picture of a flight of doves has been chosen as this year’s Winster Christmas Card background. Please consider purchasing one or more to pass on the message of peace and also to support our church and our shop. Please also take a look at the back page for information about the traditional lightening of the Christmas tree and an article about Winster’s very first Craft Sale of local handmade goods in the Burton Institute. Keep well,

Winster Village Shop and Winter Trading

The WVSA Board would like to thank all the Winster Shop customers and volunteers for their support this year. It has been a financially challenging period. Whilst we still have hurdles ahead, we are better placed to deal with these than 12 months ago. One immediate hurdle is to try to ensure that we have sufficient income over the winter period. The income taken is historically less than that taken during the summer period due to the reduction in visitors and holiday makers in the village. But the shop still has the same overheads. We hope that the high quality of product for sale from local suppliers of dairy, (Peak Dairy) meats (Coats, Ginger), bread and cakes (Luke Evans) and vegetables (Thomson’s) plus other foodstuffs, the Xmas range of products and gifts, together with the enhanced look and feel of the shop encourages customers both in and around the village to buy at Winster Shop rather than elsewhere. The Winster Shop Managers and staff look forward to welcoming you to the shop during this time. SHOP LOCAL. SHOP AT WINSTER VILLAGE SHOP WVSA Board of Directors

Thanks from the Winster Pond & Community Orchard Group

So many people to thank! Everyone who came to help clear the pond of the reed mace that is so invasive; Wendy & Cynthia for not only great refreshments but somewhere to sit down after the hard work; David Bentley for the donation of his waders and the wildflower growers and planters for their hard work earlier in the year. Our next project is two interpretation boards and we are very grateful to the Carnival Committee for £200 which is the final part in our financial jigsaw. We also will be pruning the apple and pear trees later in the month.

So a big THANK YOU

Look out for the next litter pick around the village sometime in December.

Tea and Toast at St John's. Please come and join us for the December Tea and on the 20th. Mince Pies will be served as well as the usual refreshments. Christmas Fun Afternoon at St John's Church, Sat 8th Dec, 2:30 – 5pm. This is an afternoon for folk of all ages, with children's activities (from which adults are not excluded!), a Fair Trade Stall, Christmas quizzes for children and for grown-ups, a raffle and refreshments. As part of the activities, the children can make decorations for their own Christmas tree in church. They can also decorate a hat (please bring your own hat if possible). Refreshments will be served during the afternoon, including mulled wine as well as other hot drinks, cakes and squash. We will end the afternoon with carol singing and a Christmas blessing. There is no entry charge. Money made from the raffle and any donations will be split between the church and a named charity. Any help on the afternoon would be appreciated. I have received the note below from Trading Standards who are responsible for adminis-tering and reporting of the various Weight Restrictions in the village (7.5t from Darley Dale to Elton Crossroads and 3.5t on West and East Bank). Up to now there has been an efficient and comprehensive system of reporting HGVs breaking the Restrictions which has resulted in large fines for some vehicles - the current total is in excess of £22,000. See: http://www.winsterwestbank.co.uk/ for details. It now seems the County Council will no longer entertain the multiple reports sent in and have chosen, effectively, to restrict any activity to 'record keeping' (!) unless there is a really big HGV reported. This will mean that the vast majority of offenders - from just over 3.5t and including the dozens of 7.5t lorries reported - are likely to be ignored and so the miscreants will most likely get away with their activities. On West Bank we have worked for years - at some considerable personal cost in time and money - to try to reduce the problems of rogue HGVs, as have others around the district. It now seems those efforts have largely been wasted. In future people are being asked to use the web form below which is anodyne, unwieldy and cannot accept pictures and which will take far more time than a simple email and attachment. But such are the Powers That Be. It is bitterly disappointing. Simon Stoker “We are currently undergoing a restructuring and our ability to respond to weight restriction enquiries in the future will be curtailed as a result. One of the measures we are having to introduce is to insist on reports being provided using the monitoring form on the Derbyshire County Council website, as the infor-mation will now be inputted onto our computer system by our Admin staff. The form can be found at the link below:- https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/business/trading-standards/weight-restrictions/weight-restriction-reporting/weight-restriction-monitoring-form.aspx I would appreciate if you could report incidents using this form and just mention on the form somewhere if you have a photograph. If we then wish to pursue particular sightings as a formal investigation (generally vehicles with an mgw of 18 tonnes or more on West Bank, 30 tonnes plus in village), I can then contact you directly. Otherwise, vehicle reports will be logged for information but operators will not necessarily be contacted regarding the incidents. We will still try to monitor ‘repeat offenders’ from logos on vehicles. You may of course decide to only report vehicles which we are likely to ‘action’, which of course is entirely understandable in the circumstances – if you decide to pursue this route, hopefully you will at least keep a tally of numbers for ‘other infringing vehicles’ so I can update with you occasionally. Many thanks for your ongoing assistance and co-operation, Kim Mr Kim Percival Trading Standards Officer Derbyshire County Council”

Over 25 Years of Service: Pete Postie (Peter Wheeldon) has been looking after Winster’s post for over twenty-five years. I say looking after, because how many times has he put your post somewhere safe, stopped you in the street and said “I have something for you”, or left it at the Post Office/shop with a note.

Next year he will have been with the Royal Mail for thirty years and will be retiring. So a big appreciation from us all whilst he is still on our round.

A brand new version of the classic story of the three little pigs set in Paris. A grumpy old wolf is a chef who wants some pigs' tails for his soup. Will the little pigs outwit the wolf and what kind of

house will they build? A funny, warmhearted and interactive rustic tale to make you squeal with laughter, bristling with puppets, live music and lots of joining in. Garlic Theatre entertain the whole family with beautifully crafted puppets, music and a garlicky French twist to the tale.

Remembering Remembrance As part of our events for Remembrance Day 2018, Howard (from the Royal British Legion) came in to talk to the whole school to tell us a little of his experience, but mainly to enlighten us about how the money we contribute by buying poppies, is spent. We asked lots of questions and Howard encouraged us to STOP and say THANK YOU on November 11th. We dressed in red for the day and contributed more money to this worthwhile cause. Key Stage 2 wrote thoughtful and moving letters to thank Howard for his vis-it. We were very pleased to receive the following response from Howard, which shows the power of saying ‘Thank you’.

“Just to let you know that the messages have arrived and I have read through them all . Receiving messages like that makes all the work we do worth while. I am so deeply touched that the children not only enjoyed the talk but wrote such meaningful replies. I will of course reply to all the questions, but would you please pass on my gratitude to them all. It would be an honour to come again and to talk to the children, with your permission of course.

Regards Howard”

Polythene Collection to Cease I’m not sure how many people are aware that there has been a village collection of polythene for many years, using the green wheelie bin at the side of the shop. For the last 10 years I have been sorting this and taking it to Sainsbury’s. There is no public collection of polythene in this area and, as I understand it, Sainsbury’s take it in as a community favour.

From the end of November I am giving this up. Should anyone be interested in taking this over, do get in touch with me and I can explain what the procedure involves. Rosie Strauss Tel: 650564 or email [email protected]

"I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."

This is a statement that most people know from Scrooge. But it is actually one we could live by - but what is 'Christmas in my heart'? To me it speaks of unselfish love. It speaks of caring for others on the fringes of society. When I was young my parents weren't flush with cash. But, we had a great Christmas every year. it wasn't about very expensive presents. It was about three things. Times together as a family. opportunity to 'play' together and gifts. I think these three things are very important First, time WE need to spend time together in our various groups - family, church, school, community, county etc. Being together helps us become rooted in our various groups. second, play we are so very serious all year, so very stressed and so very self obsessed. When we feel like we along are carrying the world this can lead to mental health problems. By play I mean taking oneself no too seriously, by realising we are simply part of the world; part of our community; part of our family. For us Christians we are centred of our merciful loving Father. The God who holds us and loved us completely. Third, gift - what is the most precious gift you could receive and also give? Along side all the material gifts, we have to show people how much we love them. We have to allow other to value us and love us. But this type of love is simply a foreshadowing of God's love for each of us. For Christians that's why we give gifts at Christmas this is a sign of our love but also God's love for us.

“God loves each of us as if there were only one of us"

Them as we move forward to 2019 we move forward with hope and joy and love in our hearts. For In Jesus Christ we are called and lifted up. We are give a great dignity - a great gift. God sees in us amazing people. Wonderful people. So let us move forward loving and caring for our community and world place. Let us care for the widow and orphan and those in poverty. From the Old Testament this is the call of God to serve the poor. To serve the needy. Christmas is about looking in the mirror and seeing the child of God. You are so very special. God loves us just like we love our own children. 2018 has been in many ways a year of fear. A year of pain. let us all make 2019 a year of love and charity. Let us have passion for doing what is right, just and loving.

"The Son of God became a man to enable men to become the sons of God” CS Lewis

Wishing you and your families a very happy and blessed Christmas. Please feel free to join us in celebrating the Birth of our Lord. Love and Prayers. With Kind Regards and every prayer. Rev'd Stephen Monk (Rector Darley Dale, South Darley & Winster.)

WINSTER CRAFT SALE SUCCESS We are delighted to say our debut into the world of commerce

was  very  successful  and  enjoyed  by      everyone  there.  The  cra speople  of    Winster started arriving around midday to start the transforma on of the Burton Ins tute into an Aladdin’s Cave  of  colour  and  treasures.  By  1.45  the  hall  was  full  of    customers  and  browsers  all  happily  cha ng,  ea ng  cake  and

admiring the work on display. Turned-wood items shone and gleamed cheek-to-cheek with  gli er-strewn  gree ngs  cards.      Jewel-coloured  stained-glassware  com-plemented  the  fragmented  designs  of patchwork  quilts  and  tapestries.  Framed pictures  created  from  a  diversity  of     ingredients  such  as  pebbles,  wood,

plaster and flowers, jostled for space alongside Christmas decora ons, gemstone and bead  jewellery, decoupage and kni ed  toys,  as well  as a huge  selec on of beau ful tex le work including applique and patchwork. The level of skill and talent all together in one room was quite astonishing. We both say a HUGE thank you to everyone who par cipated and helped to make it such a very lovely event. Ali and Gill
