At The Head with OmarThe first Test Series for 2014 was played against QLD at Port Macquarie in January. The first Test was a draw which meant being the current holders of the trophy NSW only had to win 1 of the remaining 2 tests to retain the trophy. But as NSW showed all throughout the 2013, we seem to do our best work coming home from behind and that’s exactly what we did to win the remaining two tests 70 to 43 and 65 to 57 to retain the trophy. My rink was fortunate enough to go through undefeated and I was named Player of the Series. Our U/25 Boys also won their series and Matt Pieterson was named their Player of the Series.

By the time you read this we will have played an Interstate Series against Victoria at Wodonga BC in early March and about to play W A at Taren Point on 25th- 26th March and we then head to Tasmania for the 6 A Side and Alley Shield held at Burnie B C from 28 March to 3 April.

With the Commonwealth Games on this year in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 3 August it’s also a busy time on the International scene. We had a selection trial in Melbourne during February for the Trans Tasman, which I have been successful in gaining selection in the Mens Team. The 5 man team is Brett ‘Wizz’ Wilkie, Matt ‘Tangles’ Flapper, Wayne ‘Rudy’ Ruediger, Nathan ‘Lurch’ Rice and yours truly. I will be playing the Singles and also teaming up with Rudy and Lurch in the Triples. We will take on the Kiwis at Traralgon BC in Victoria on 18-20 March.

As always I like to finish with a “Tip or “Handy Hint” that you might be able to use to help your game. There will be times during the pennant season where you will not be playing your best game but there are more ways to contribute to a team’s performance than just playing good bowls! Picking up your teammates bowls, celebrating your mates good bowls with a ‘High 5’ or a pat on the back are other ways you can contribute. A positive attitude in a team can sometimes be the difference between a win and a loss.

WANTED - Good Men with Professional Expertise

If a club is experiencing or looks like it might start to experience financial difficulties, or even just wishes to run a health check to ensure they are not heading towards financial difficulties, the members of the Club Advisory Committee have the experience and expertise to assist clubs. This is a resource that Bowls NSW is committed to and needs to be available to our clubs.

The Club Advisory Committee is a small band of people who perform this role with distinction but in order to go on providing this important and essential service, they need to grow the team and ensure there are sufficient experts on the ground to cover the State adequately and that the resource continues into the future.

The role is three-fold: an assessment of annual reports and current financials provided by the club, an onsite visit to the applicant club and the preparation of a report for the club giving a run down on strengths and weaknesses observed together with a plan forward.

If you have professional qualifications that may be of service in this assessment process and you are in a position to offer your services in a voluntary capacity, or indeed, if you would like further information, you should firstly contact

Greg Helm at [email protected] or 02 9283 4555.

Well done Peter!Central Coast Team Contest Final Series of Unofficial World Championship

Congratulations to Terrigal B C’s Adam Davidson and Woy Woy’s John Orme on reaching the finals of the inaugural Aloha Barefoot Bowls Championship played in Hawaii. The event organized by Bowls NSW was a pair’s game consisting of one registered player and one new player. Adam is the experienced player and John is the new boy on the block. Regardless of the outcome it has been a wonderful experience for them both and they will have plenty of stories to tell about their trip to Hawaii.
