Bangkok, founded in the late18th century, is a youngmetropolis saturated withtradition. The wats, withtheir gilded, intricatelydesigned spires, are an integral part of the cityscapeand daily life. The majority of the people are devoutBuddhists. Many people raisetheir hands, palms pressedtogether, and bow theirheads in a traditional waigreeting as they pass saffron-robed monks and the city’smany wats.

The Thai are gracious, modest and renowned fortheir hospitality. Ostentationis reserved for their templesand other public buildings.

The Temple of the EmeraldBuddha, home of Thailand’smost revered image ofBuddha, is an opulentexample of the Thai devotion to Buddha. The

statue, actually carved ofjade, wears seasonal garments that glitter withgold and jewels.

Four thousand years ago,fishing villages occupied the sites now claimed byskyscrapers and designershops. But modern Dubaibuilt itself upon its 19th-century pearl trade tobecome the commercial capital and shopping meccaof the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai’s glitzy reputation hasonly been bolstered by itsfamed man-made islands.The Palm and The Worldislands showcase the ingenuity of new Dubai, butbehind the flash is a bevy ofcultural treasures.
