Another year is in the books. This will be my final Arrows article as an ACC board member and president of the club. I would like to

publicly thank the board for their dedication and hard work, most of it behind the scenes. A special thank you to Gene Tate and Larry Fletcher who, like me, are concluding their third year on the board. We are looking forward to “just playing golf.”

The ballot results are in and if you have not heard the tally, 77% of eligible equity members voted to sell the club and 23% voted to keep and improve it. As a result, the board is busy looking for potential buyers in hopes of getting several offers from which to choose.

By the time you read this, our greens keeper, Peder, will have departed. He is returning to his home area in Washington and is leaving Greenway as well. He has worked hard on our behalf and we wish Peder the best in his future endeavors. I spoke with Ken Campbell of Greenway and Peder’s replacement will be a fellow named Dan Holmes. Dan is Greenway’s senior greens keeper and comes from up near the bay area. Welcome Dan!

So long everyone – I’ll see you on the course!

The SCGA Thursday Team Play regular season has come to a close with Arrowhead Country Club Thursday Team making a very good showing this season and fell just short of moving on to the playoffs. It was so close that it came down to a matter of points between Arrowhead and Sierra La Verne. And because of Sierra La Verne’s good play and the goat track that only they can score on they will move onto the Playoffs.

March will see a busy month of tournament events, both member and outside play. Our first event is the Founder’s Day Scramble. This event is traditionally the first Wednesday of March. All members are welcome to participate in this event. Simply pick your Foursome and sign up in the golf shop. The cost to enter this event is $20 per player which is all going towards script for the prize fund. And as always we want to make the day easy for you. Teams can choose from both an 8:00 AM Shotgun and a 12:30 PM Shotgun start times and prizes will be a grand total for the entire days play.

Wow, spring training is

underway and we’ll soon be able to watch our Angels and or Dodgers. So now that Baseball is almost to get underway, it’s time to kick off junior golf for the season. Management has decided to try going Saturday Mornings at 11:00 Am this year. It is certainly a better time of day than the 5:00 Pm we did in past years.

And after the kids come out and learn something about golf afternoon can be in the swimming pool.

I am going to put The Rules of Golf Section in our monthly news article. For the first Rules of Golf Section why not start out with a basic overview of how the book is laid out and the best strategy to learning how to use the book.

The Rules of Golf Book is available through the USGA at no cost up to $39.00 depending on the publication and accessories. There is also an app available for $1.99. The basic Rules of Golf book is at no cost. Simply contact golf house at USGA.org.

The Rules of Golf Book comes out every 4 years and the Decisions Book comes every 2 years. Meaning there are rules changes made every 4 years when the two governing bodies of golf come together, The Royal and Ancient Rules Limited and The United States Golf Association.

The Rules of Golf Book layout is simply 3 sections plus

the Appendixes. The sections are 1) Etiquette 2) Definitions 3) The Rules of Play.

With the resignations of three more Board members, Katie Ankrum has agreed to serve as interim President. Ann Doty and Cherrie Lubey have joined the Board serving as First and Second Vice President respectively. As AWGA membership continues to change, no further additions will be made to the Board. The current Board members will share the duties of those we have lost. Thanks to all those who have been willing to step up to support our group.

Most Improved Player for the month of January was Cherrie Lubey. February’s Platter winner was Gina Schelin with a Net 70. As this was Gina’s third win, she will be presented a platter on Play Day in June. Susan Smith was February’s Putt winner with 30 putts.

The ladies’ Ryder Cup competition began on February 12 with the Red Team earning 4 points to the Pink Team’s 0. With two more days of play, things can change in a heartbeat. Thanks and good luck to all those who support this fun competition.

We look forward to ACC hosting a WSCGA Grandmothers’ Tournament at ACC on March 9, 2015. This should be an excellent opportunity to advertise our club.

Typically I see rules questions come up and the parties involved will usually become tense or nervous. Perhaps because they want to keep play moving? Or they are not knowing how to find the rule that is correct. Or to contact the committee?

The advice of your PGA Professional and SCGA or USGA official is to first learn and understand the Definitions`. When reading a rule you’ll see words written in italics. In the Rules of Golf Book these are always Definitions. It will help tremendously in learning how to use the book.

But please take a moment of your time to read Section 1, Etiquette. It covers 4 short pages of the book and the content it covers is invaluable. It will talk of the spirit of the game, Safety, The consideration of other players, Care of the Course and a conclusion that will talk of penalties for a breach of etiquette.

If any member has rules questions or is interested in any capacity regarding The Rules of Golf, please feel free to contact the golf shop and we’ll be glad to help.

Alan the great!

I t was the summer of 1951 and I had just holed out a putt on the

sixteenth green to win my match in the second round of the Junior Club Championship. I won but I was disgusted because it had taken me sixteen holes to close out a young man I should have beaten at least 6 & 5. So as soon as I picked my ball out of the hole I put it in my pocket picked up my bag and started back to the clubhouse, in spite of the fact that Pat, I don’t remember his last name, would have liked me to finish the round with him. I just wanted to get off the golf course. I was almost half way back down the fairway when I glanced over and saw Bobby Bohn our club champion walking very purposely towards me from the fourteenth green. I turned towards him all set to receive his congratulations for winning the match, when he asked me what I was doing. A few minutes later I turned again back towards the sixteenth green and this time with my tail between my legs. My reason for this about face was a severe scolding by Mr. Bohn for my serious breach of etiquette and he let me know in no uncertain terms that common courtesy to your opponent, especially in a tournament is an essential part of this game. I caught up with Pat in the middle of the seventeenth fairway, he was glad to see me and have somebody to finish the round with, no matter how chastened that person might be. As we walked off the eighteenth green at the conclusion of our round he let me know that he had just shot his best round of golf and thanked me for finishing with him. I won that match but Pat was the real winner.

The USGA lists the Rules of Etiquette in the front part of the official Rules of Golf in Section I. They realize that without etiquette we don’t have a game, we’ve got nothing.

Bobby Bohn had been in a foursome that day with my dad, Guy Potts and Jimmy Moffitt. Which brings up the issue of role models and over the years Arrowhead has had an abundance of them. Anybody in that foursome could have talked to me, but they knew that the scolding I needed would have its greatest impact coming from our club champion Bobby Bohn. There were plenty of important business men and college Presidents who were golfers at Arrowhead in 1951 just as there are now but I was not impressed. What did they know, they couldn’t hit a two iron like Bobby. However, I would in the future avail myself of

the sage advice of those gentlemen that had nothing to do with golf and who didn’t even carry a two iron, which was one of the many benefits of growing up at Arrowhead Country Club.

In describing some significant flora

I would like to talk about some flora that no longer exists on the course and for that matter was never on the course per se. In 1948 the junction of 34th and Parkside was one side of the entrance to the club in a catty-corner sort of way. The home that occupied that lot, a small wood frame structure that was barely visible from the street; as it was overwhelmed by Holly Hocks, Gladiolas, Gerbera Daisies and other plants that are the salient features of a perennial garden. In this instance the entire property was occupied by the garden, but as was the case with most perennial gardens this one was never weedy nor seemed to be out of season. Reason being it was constantly being tended to by an elderly couple. The gentleman was afflicted with a severe case of the tremors as his entire body and head were constantly shaking and he also never stopped babbling uncontrollably. The lady on the other hand can only be described in terms of what she wore, as she was always completely covered from head to foot in her pilgrim style garments complete with large bonnet and ribbons. This entire 19th century movie set scene was framed appropriately enough by the stereotypical white picket fence. It is an entrance that we’ll never be able to duplicate.

The photos included with this article show Bobby Bohn, Guy Potts and my dad at the conclusion of the 1951 club championship while the other photo is a view across the 16th green in the mid-fifties showing the absence of trees in the back of the green and along the 17th fairway and the new construction of homes on Parkdale.
