Adventures in Art: NATIVE ALABAMA Fifth grade students from Auburn City Schools experienced authentic Native American culture during the 18th

annual Adventures in Art program, held August 28 – 31 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

Adventures in Art is hosted by the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department / Jan Dempsey Community Arts

Center and partially funded through an art education grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The

program is a field trip component of a community-based art education program.

This year’s theme, “Native Alabama,” focused on art derived from the first inhabitants of Alabama, the Native

Americans. The program was held in conjunction with the Alabama Bicentennial Celebration of “Discovering our

Places,” and kicked off with a dance performance by the Medicine Tail Singers, a traveling drum group with ties to

various Southeastern tribes. After the performance, students split into groups and attended three workshops: a

visual arts workshop that focused on a weaving project inspired by the ancient Native American rivercane mats; a

workshop where students learned and played stickball, a traditional Native American game similar to lacrosse; and,

a performance workshop with the Medicine Tail Singers where students learned traditional Native American

dancing styles.

All student weaving projects were exhibited at the Arts Center from Sept. 1 - 18. For more information about AIA,

please contact Cari Cleckler, Art Education Specialist, at [email protected]

Instructor Spotlight: Nils Larsen Nils Larsen started teaching classes with the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center (JDCAC) in

September 2017. Nils was raised in Auburn and attended Auburn High School before receiving

his BA in art from Bethany College of Applied Arts in Lindsborg, Kansas. After receiving his

degree, Nils found his passion for tattooing. Nils has been a professional tattoo artist for 12

years. When asked about his love for the arts, Nils said with a chuckle, “I grew up on a steady

diet of comic books. I spent a lot of time drawing in the margins of my notebooks instead of

studying my assignments.” Nils got involved with the JDCAC through attending JDCAC’s Open

Studio classes over the years, which got him interested in teaching classes of his own. Nils now

instructs a Painting Open Studio class of his own, where students are encouraged to work on

their own projects and share fellowship while Nils is able to offer constructive critiques in an

open environment. Nils loves art because “art provides the opportunity for self-exploration and

the externalization of inner experience.” For more information about Nils Larsen or the classes

he is offering, please contact the JDCAC at (334) 501-2963.

meets new friends in the jungle, will he return to his human world or remain with the

pack? The Jungle Book is sure to warm the hearts of the whole family.
