CRITICAL THINKING FOR

UNDERSTANDING ARTModeling the Critique Process

WHAT IS A CRITIQUE?A critique is the process of discussion by which we examine and

evaluate creative works.

A critique can be done alone, with a few people, or in a large

group.

Critiques might be about your work, your classmates’ work, or a

famous piece that is made by someone you do not know.

WHAT DO WE CRITIQUE?Critiques can be applied to any creative endeavor:

● Visual Arts: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography,

Performance Art, Installations, Digital Art, Film, Fashion & Costume

Design, etc.

● Performing Arts: Dance, Musical Compositions, Vocal

Performances, Instrumental Performances, Acting, Playwriting,

Directing, Stage Design, Sound Design, etc!

● Writing

● Cuisine

Can you think of more areas to critique?

WHY DO WE CRITIQUE?

● To understand creative works

● To improve our own work and inspire new work

● To help others understand and improve their work

● To fully experience a creative work

A critique is not meant to be negative.

A good critique is honest and constructive.

I’m Nobody! Who are you? (260)

Emily Dickinson, 1830 - 1886

I’m Nobody! Who are you?

Are you – Nobody – too?

Then there’s a pair of us!

Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!

How public – like a Frog –

To tell one’s name – the livelong June –

To an admiring Bog!

Dorothea Tanning, On Time Off Time, 1948
