THE LANDSCAPE GENRE: UNIT EXPECTATIONSThe landscape genre has evolved greatly over the last century. This unit will explore the many movements or styles that have contributed to the landscape genre by using both traditional and contemporary art tools.

Students are expected to create digital and non-digital landscapes and submit an independent research paper on an artist whose practice includes the landscape genre.

Class time will be used predominantly for studio practice.

PART A - Ephemeral assemblage, Photography & Stop-Animation

PART B – Independent Research Paper

PART A: DIGITAL LANDSCAPES

Students will use digital photography and technologies to explore the landscape genre. They will understand the meaning of ephermal art and how it relates to the landscape genre.Students will study the work of Andy Goldsworthy.

Ephemeral ArtThere are many forms of ephemeral

art, from sculpture to performance, but the term is usually used to describe a

work of art that only occurs once, like a happening, and cannot be embodied in

any lasting object to be shown in a museum or gallery.

Ephemeral ArtPhotography plays a crucial role in today’s modern ephemeral art. The photograph or documentation of the work shows it at its height – marking the moment when it may seem most alive.

ANDY GOLDSWORTHYIs an English-born artist who has gained a significant

reputation for creating site-specific art situated in using natural materials such as leaves, sand, ice, and stone that often originate from the local site. He studied at Bradford

School of Art and Preston Polytechnic and has been making art in the environment, both rural and urban, since the mid-1970s. Over the past 25 years, Goldsworthy has gained a

significant reputation for both his ephemeral works and his permanent installations that draw out the endemic character

of a place. He currently resides in Scotland.

ANDY GOLDSWORTHYEach work grows, stays, decays – integral parts of a cycle which the photograph shows at its heights, marking the moment when the work is most alive. There is an intensity about a work at its peak that I hope is expressed in the image. Process and decay are implicit. – Andy Goldsworthy

What materials are used by Goldsworthy? What type of reaction do you have to his work? What do you think Goldsworthy wants the viewer to experience?

What are some of the recurring images in Goldsworthy’s work?

What elements of art are used by Goldsworthy? How does he change the environment that we see?

Goldsworthy doesn’t use any materials or tools that he can’t find in nature.

He uses materials that he finds in the place he is working, but it isn’t easy. He has to plan. He may work with branches, leaves, moss, grass, dirt, stones, and even water. He often tries things many times before he has success. He takes no tools with him but finds his tools in nature. For example:

If he needed a hammer he might use ___________.If he needed to tie something he might use___________.If he needed to glue something he might use___________.If he needed to pin something he might use_________.If he needed to prop something up he might use __________.

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 1Download the app MIXALA & ADOBE PHOTOSHOP MIX & IMOVIE to your ipad or iphone.

We will use these apps to create Goldsworthy-inspired art with digital photographs & stop animation films.

MIXALA can be used to explore layering – with simple swipes and touches imagery from the collection can be dropped into mandalas and then those elements can be brought forward and back to construct simple compositions.

Use this app to consider the effect of colour, focal points, repetition, compositions, patterns, mandalas, and/or rotational symmetry.

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 1Using the app MIXALA.

There may be no prescribed ending points when you can layer techniques, save imagery to the photo gallery whenever an interesting picture emerges, return to and manipulate previous versions, as well as undo ‘mistakes’ easily. You are limited only by your imagination.

Use collage to create an image with multiple parts

Make as many as you like with the minimum number being 4

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 2Go outside and photograph leaves, trees, grass – anything you can find in nature.

◦ Take photos of clusters of leaves, flowers, branches.

◦ Take photos of a single leaf, flower, branch.

◦ Take photos of these objects from different angles.

◦ Don’t manipulate these objects.

◦ When taking a photograph, consider the light. (Don’t take photos of objects that are mostly located in the shade).

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 3Use the apps MIXALA and ADOBE PHOTOSHOP MIX to create your own mandalas.

In Photoshop, tap on the + sign and choose an image from your camera roll, Instagram account etc.

Use Photoshop to manipulate your photographs

-----tap on the ICON “cut out” – this will open a new window with your chosen image.

----- use the various tools to isolate the image that you want to use (mostly the + or – sign found on the side bar)

----- save the image to the camera roll once manipulated to your liking.

Import them to MIXALA and create your own Digital Ephemeral art

(create at least 2) – so this Digital Ephemeral art is to be created with original photographs

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 4CREATE WORK IN THE ENVIRONMENT!

Using the knowledge of Goldsworthy, get inspired! Go to our great outdoors and take a look at the environment as a source for art making.

LOOK! REALLY LOOK! AROUND YOU AND EXPLORE YOUR RESOURCES.

Collect natural materials that have visual appeal. Look for different textures, colours, shapes and sizes in a variety of organic materials such as leaves, rocks, sticks, dirt, etc.

Create an assemblage of these objects and you have…a beautiful photographic opportunity – take a photograph for every step!the starting point for a digitally manipulated/app-ed imageinspiration for a drawing, painting or sculpturethe beginning of a time-lapse film that watches the elements erode the work

ideas!…

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION– LESSON 4USE DIGITIAL TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE STOP-ANIMATION FILMS!

Use a stop-frame animation of your assemblage as it is constructed to produce a visual record of a rather ephemeral work and to document the creative process. (one film – 30-45 secs)

See the example.

PART A – DIGITAL EXPLORATION – CRITERIA2 Digital Mandalas using Mixala - only

◦ demonstrates an understanding of radial symmetry, colour, and layering.

◦ Demonstrates an understanding of radial symmetry, colour, and layering.

1 Stop-Frame Animation Film – 30 – 45 secs• Demonstrates an understanding of the concept of 1 Stop-Animation;

• Uses a variety of natural objects to create an ephemeral art piece• Creates an assemblage in the style of Goldsworthy (repetition, radial symmetry, colour, patterns, rhythm and/or layering);• Uses transitions to enhance the experience of the video;• Thinks about and uses exploratory & experimental approaches;• Uses music or sound effects to enhance the experience. These were appropriate in tempo to the video• Shows a title & ending page/slide (not more than 10 secs of the full film length)• Demonstrates a complexity with the media of both the ephemeral art and video making.• Shows care and good use of time to complete the project(s)
