Dora Longo Bahia(Brazil)

The work I have been doing this past year consists of figurative paintings almost totally monochromes where the image itself appears in a pictorial mist.

The first works of this series are white paintings portraying men with the proportions of documental photographs. The paintings are ghosts, remains of images. In 1998, during a working period in Paris, I made misty landscapes paintings appropriating the grey and beige colours typical of the city as well as the diagonal incidence of the sun light common there and directly opposed to the white vertical light of the tropics (Sao Paulo) and covered them with fog through veils of paint.

The photographs of the paintings were considered bad by the technicians from the laboratory because the images were not clear enough (this being related to the painting itself but ignored by the technicians). I became interested in how photography can deceive and what bad photography is.

Starting a research on friends and family archives, I selected antique photographs and grouped them, following alterations of colours or of the image itself (for example, interference of fungus).

From some of these antique 6x6 slides, I continued the monochrome series, using images of mothers with babies, that through a peculiarity of the old film or an alteration due to time, had become totally red. The images on the paintings continue to appear as red ghosts, in a red environment, involved by a red mist. I also transfered them on different surfaces like glass, parchement or leather, through transfer (photo-copies) or prints and rephotographed them, printing them as cibachromes.

In 1999, during a working period at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam I explored the image made un-clear, with no definition or considered wrong or damaged through painting, printing and photography. I painted

the images from old slides on red canvas and after covering them with greenish veils of paint, scratched them until the red showed through. The name of the series is «who’s afraid of red?» hommaging Barnett Newman’s work «who’s afraid of red, yellow and blue?» and whose painting was badly damaged by a maniac at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

I also did a series of silkscreens, «Infected images», using images from musty slides. I stressed the damage on the surface, creating a relief through etching similar to pimples or warts on human skin. Rephotographing the slides on a white canvas with someone under or over it, I intended to propose an ambiguous surface to the images. The person appears ghostly on the scene, altering the proportions and straight lines of the photographic perspective. I am planning to make light boxes with transparent film only on the infected spots.

Related to a current master course at the University of Sao Paulo, I am developping a different project. It consists in creating a documentation of the work of a fictitious artist who would have lived in Brazil during the dictatorship years (late sixties, early seven-ties). His name is Marcelo do Campo and his work consists of performances and ephemeral installations having sex and vilence as the main theme. I have started documenting two of his supposed perfor-mances through video and photography. As various artists involved in politics fled Brazil during these years (Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica, Antonio Dias…) some of Marcelo’s work could be developped in Europe.

I would like to stress my difficulty in establishing a well prepared and concrete working plan as I am doing various researches and would like to let the influences of a different environment act on them.

During my working period at the ECAV, I would like to explore images of an unclear, blurred identity-: with no definition or considered wrong through painting, printing or photography.

I would like also to stress my difficulty to establish a well prepared and concrete work plan as I am also doing various researches with mono-prints through cut supports (paper, parchement, leather), videos and small embroideries and objects. I would like not only to take something in progress from Brazil but also to let the different environment I will be submitted to change my work.I have had a period of great reflection upon my work and now I am starting to do something that may arrive somewhere. I know that ECAV has a wonderful orientation and, that, above all, is what appeals to me the most-: to stimulate the reflection upon the artistic doing.
