YCAC‘s programs are supported in part with public funds from the

New York State Council on the Arts.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the quality of

life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing

opportunities for active participation in the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop

art programs and projects; coordinate,

schedule, and publicize events; develop & main-tain physical facilities.

From the Executive Director, Kris Pearson

From the Director’s Chair

Everything old becomes new again! We’re ringing in the New Year with some great new projects and plans that we hope will excite our friends, members and the community as a whole.

Our doors will close in January so we can finish the final piece of our Main Street Arts Center – installation of the elevator that will ensure that workshops, meetings and activities in the Rosenfeld Studio are easily accessible to everyone in our community. Our thanks to every-one who has given so generously to bring this project together in such a time-ly manner. While the doors will be closed to the public we’ll still be at work finishing our planning for a terrific new year. We can’t wait to start “elevating” artists of all ages and levels of experi-ence in our elevator and through our ac-tivities!

Watch for workshops that explore some new artistic direc-tions – poetry, ceramics, wa-tercolor jewel-ry, bonsai – and activities that expand our reach into the communi-ty, like the B&B tour fundraiser, which will take place in Ham-mondsport this year. Expect to see more activity at our wonderful lakeside facility, Sunny Point, and a wealth of talented artists from around the region and the state sharing their work at the Flick Gal-lery.

Keep watching as everything old be-comes new again at the Arts Center of Yates County! We hope you’ll take ad-vantage of all we have to offer in 2014. See you in February!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD The next exhibit at the Flick Gallery, opening Sunday, February 9, 3-5 PM, is built around the theme “FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD.” (Got your attention, didn’t we?) David Dorsey is a Rochester-area painter whose work can be seen at The Oxford Gallery. He will be exhibiting his colorful paintings, so luscious you could eat them! He is an award-winning painter who has exhibited international-ly, at museums, galleries and universities, in both America and Europe. His work depicts commonplace situations and objects, in a way that celebrates the formal abstract properties of each scene as well as the lustrous, purely phys-ical qualities of oil paint, with an emphasis on subtle color harmonies.

The Rochester Folk Art Guild will also be of-fering ceramic and wood items along the “food” theme...items worthy of filling with food. The gallery reception will be an “Empty Bowls” event. Many local potters, including students and professionals, are making soup bowls, and donating them to the cause. Visitors will make a donation ($20 is suggested) for a bowl, and then will taste a variety of soups provided by Keuka Restaurant, Penn Yan Diner, Oak Hill, Milly’s Pantry, and others. The money will be donated to the Backpack Program at Milly’s

Pantry, so children in Yates Country don’t go hungry. At the other end of the food spectrum, Deca-dent Desserts will be prepared by anyone enrolled in Sharon Corcoran’s new class be-ing offered on Tuesday, February 11, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Registration will be very limited, so call promptly. The class will pre-pare (and doubtless EAT) amaretto creme brulee, chocolate mousse, dark rum bread pudding and almond tuiles.

IMPORTANT DATES

Artists, drop off work Feb. 3, 10-3

Everyone, come to the EMPTY BOWLS reception Sun., Feb. 9, 3:00-5:00 PM

From the President:

Thank you to all readers of this newsletter, Members, Volunteers and Board Members for making 2013 a great year. I wish you all a pros-perous new year 2014. My wishes, also, go to the Arts Center itself for continuing to be a fabulous resource for the Community. In 2013, we had the pleasure of welcoming more than 10.000 visitors, we delivered 3.500 hours of workshops, we had a record number of applica-tions from new Volunteers and we kept the Cen-ter financially healthy. So, what is in the box for 2014? Starting December 26, the Center will be closed until end of January. This is for the good cause: the installation of the elevator! At the beginning of February all activities will start again: - new exhibitions with talented and renowned artists

- an extended catalog of workshops with new activities and new instructors - a full program of activities at Sunny Point

There will also be many more new initiatives which will be announced during the course of the year. Stay tuned by visiting the web site or by following us on FaceBook. All these activities need a lot of effort and time.

But we are lucky to bene-fit from the support of a large portion of the entire Community. Thank you to all who participate!

Volunteer Spotlight

The Arts Center has been very fortunate to recruit do-cents who are artistic or have a strong interest in promoting the arts. This month's featured volunteer, Jennifer Gibson, has both qualities. Jennifer expresses her love for art in the following words:

I was born and raised in Penn Yan and, like many people, remember going to the Arts Council when it was on Elm Street. Being a docent on Main Street is great, and I love sell-ing the artists' work. I have always loved art since I was in elementary school and on up. I went on to the study of fine arts in Pittsburgh, PA, and then got into library science. Most of my artwork is drawing and painting, and I have exhibited it in Pittsburgh and Ithaca. Right now I am trying to get into chil-dren or young adult book illustration and have attended some conferences and workshops in that area. My website is www.jgibsonillustration.com.

Be sure to check out Jennifer's website. She is a talented young lady! Jennifer Gibson

Save the date!

The Arts Center's Third Annual Bed and Breakfast Tour will be held in Hammondsport, N.Y. on Saturday, May 3, 2014. This year we'll be featuring six exciting B&Bs including a unique octagon house, a couple of homes whose original owners were pioneer wine barons, as well as a former 19th century winery building. Tickets will go on sale April 1.

Fred Brockway offers a new class, and explains how he came to this...

I am a retired educator, having served 30+ years as a Guidance Counselor first in an Adult Ed, Program and the next 15 years in Nottingham High School in Syracuse. During those years I wrestled with a burning question: “Is there a better way? Is there a better way for the young to explore and learn? Is there a better way to sustain the adult desire to learn? Is there a more efficient way to recognize misinformation and correct it? Is there a better way to exercise our freedom? Etc.

This question “To find a better way” lingered for years without an answer even into my retirement., until I completed the training to be a Hospice Volunteer. I assist others as they initiate the process that terminates in taking one last breath. The training that pre-pared me for this kind of relationship was truly unique because it required that I envi-sion and embrace my last breath; it was like grasping the anchor of life with both hands. Everything that truly matters is now “in my hands”. The realization that it has always been this way is comforting so I bring this attitude to each new day but especially to every new Hospice patient that I befriend.

Experiencing life from this perspective reshaped my thinking. It ‘s much more than just a new paradigm; it is the realization that there is an on-going mind-body dialogue. I feel the unfinished work of the caterpillar transforming me and my need to be transparent. The class “A Butterfly Experience” is a way of celebrating life and changing the world at the same time. (See class listing on page 10.)

Penn Yan Art Guild monthly meetings will resume in the spring. Over the winter, there will be Open Studio time for individuals to pursue their art at the Rosenfeld Workshop in the Arts Center on the first and third Mon-days of each month (except January, when elevator installation interrupts us) , 9:00 AM til noon. PYAG exists to encourage all artistic endeavors. Guests and new members are always welcome. If you wish to join, please bring 3 examples of your work to a meeting for the group to admire as a way of introducing your-self. Dues are Active Member $20 , Associate Member (not displaying art) $15. Send PYAG dues to Sally Thomas, 3598 Sid White Rd., Keuka Park, 14478

“Palm of the Hand” Writers: Jan. 6, Feb. 3 and 17, 4-5:30 PM

The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-of-the-Hand” memoir writers meet, usually in the Board Room of the Arts Center. Note: due to elevator installation mess, the January meeting will be at the Penn Yan Library. And in February, we will experiment with meeting twice a month! The concept of this writing is to take a single anecdote expressed in no more than one page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each read and offer feedback if requested. (And we each kick in $1 to ACYC.)

Char DiGennaro, co-president Helga Poreda, co-president Sally Thomas, treasurer Bonnie Barney, secretary Fran Bliek, membership chair

Improve your “seeing” and drawing this winter...try contour drawing:

Contour drawing is the single best way to master the skill of “seeing flatly.” Here are a few things to keep in mind: A contour is any edge you can see around, in or on an ob-ject...the outside edge, any interior shape, wrinkle, abrupt color change, etc. The essence of contour draw-ing is drawing while keeping your eyes on the thing you are drawing, and not on the paper. Pick a point on the outside edge, put your eyes on it. Place your pencil tip on the paper. As your eyes move up,

down, around the object, your hand moves the pencil up, down and around...but don’t peek! Pretend you are touching what you are seeing with your pencil. Imagine the pencil is tracing the shape your eyes are on. Draw slowly. It may come as a pleasant surprise that just taking the time to really look closely and patiently is all it takes to do a good drawing. Keep a sketch pad handy, and use a few minutes a day to im-prove your ability to look at a three-dimensional object, and render it on a flat paper.
