GAS GENERAL MEETING was held at 3pm on Sunday 1st March

T his was an interesting and varied meeting, well attended by members. Our visiting guest was Wendy Ray, an Acrylic painter who has been

teaching art at the Lara community centre for many years. Wendy's favourite subjects are farm and rural scenes; she takes delight in visiting her daughter at Blampiede where she finds a wealth of painting subjects. Wendy will conduct a painting workshop at GAS on 14th March. Her teaching method will be step by step examples with students following. Wendy expects to hold classes in the Wednesday afternoon time slot term two at GAS.

T he next item on the agenda was a commemoration of Bill Warren the artist. Various members had brought to the meeting Bill Warren paintings they

owned. They talked about the paintings and recounted their memories of Bill. Sue Robinson reminded us that Bill had been a member of the Geelong Art Society for over sixty years and in all that time had rarely, if ever, missed a meeting. Margaret Woodhead first met Bill fifty years ago. The painting she brought to the meeting was a Scottish view, of a place where she had recently holidayed and where Bill had previously painted. Bill was also a skilled printmaker, she said. Robert Tantau, Bill's best mate, painted with Bill many times: on the Barwon River, at Nambucca Heads and in Scotland where they shared a rented cottage for a time. Rob pointed out that Bill was also keen on the theatre and regularly attended the performances at the Winged Unicorn at Ceres. He added that Bill had a quirky sense

of humour. Janet Baird first met Bill at Sparrow Park, where GAS had their studio

at that time. She recalled that Bill used Saunders paper which he wetted on the back; this was enough to stick it to the board. And if the paper dried as he worked, he simply lifted it, wetted it again and carried on.

"Bill was good at woodblock prints too. He was a good friend and I learnt so much from him" said Janet.

Brian Close, when a new member, spoke to Bill saying he was keen to sell his paintings. "Don't worry," said Bill with a chuckle, "you'll soon get used to taking them home again."

T he Lucky Date winner was then drawn. Christa Onyschko won the prize, the date being

13th May.

G regor Wallace spoke on the building

renovation and presented a slide show of the work from beginning to end.. He also generously donated to GAS a photo album of the building renovations. David Moore

SECRETARY’S REPORT W e have a few announcements to make to our

members and hope that you all greet the news as positive and as our ongoing commitment to keep the Art Society viable.

As you can see our building is looking much closer to its former glory, thanks to the hard work and commitment of M.D. Jennings who have done an outstanding job, way above our expectations.

I am happy to announce that we have received a letter from the National Trust of Victoria that our property has been selected to receive a Heritage Award for projects of excellence, i.e. restoration of a Heritage Place.

We shall be delighted to accept this award at the Heritage Awards 2015 event on April 17th, a lot of hard work has gone into this and we would like to acknowledge the grant from the Geelong Council, private members donations and the hard work of committed members of the Society. The work, of course has not finished but we are proud of where we are today and anticipate that things will continue to improve as long as we have a strong member support base.

W e have appointed David Hume as our Office Manager, David has many years of

experience with the society, holding the position of Secretary and an ongoing committee member. We need to project a professional image, this can only be done if we have continuity at our office level. We have relied on our members to do 'duty' for many years and appreciate their enormous effort in this task. We have found, in recent times that it is more difficult to keep a

full quota of roster members, so the decision has been made that we have a permanent manager Tuesday to Friday each week who will be able to keep the office running smoothly, David has offered his services and we are delighted that he has accepted this task.

W e have also explored the prospect of offering Artists in Residence space in our gallery. We

need to ensure we have enough income to keep the Society viable. We now have a lot of competition from other groups in Geelong offering classes and workshops, this is obvious in the decline in our class numbers, and workshops no longer attract the numbers required. We will seek to offer two to three places in our lower gallery area for this purpose, and hope that these artists will attract more visitors as well as giving the Society a regular income.

We encourage all members to give the Committee any feedback on the above, your involvement in the future of the Society is essential.

Michele Karakasch On behalf of the Committee

WENDY RAY WORKSHOP was held on Saturday 14th March

T he Wendy Ray acrylic painting workshop, 'The Barwon at Fyansford' was held in the GAS studio on Saturday 14th March. The subject was a view of the Barwon River at Fyansford. A photograph

of the scene was displayed constantly on a large TV screen. There was also a finished painting of the scene. Both images could be referred to by students as they progressed with their work.

Wendy's method of teaching was a step by step demonstration with students following.

She began with a pencil outline of the scene, (not a detailed drawing) and worked from background to foreground. A warm blue sky (cobalt blue and burnt umber) and distant trees (cobalt with a touch of magenta) were painted with with gel medium added to ensure a transparent / translucent effect.

The painting progressed through the day with warmer, stronger colours being used in the foreground trees, foliage and ground. Adjustments were made where necessary to the background with washes / glazes of cool colours and gel medium.

"Tell the story," said Wendy. 'Foreground, middleground and distance. Push the background back even if you can't see it in the photograph."

All in all, a very interesting and informative day. David Moore
