1. Theatre UNB presents Orphans by Lyle Kessler Dec 2-5

Theatre UNB is set to stage American playwright Lyle Kessler’s Orphans, a play that has had a prolific run on stages around the world since its premiere in Los Angeles in 1983, including a 2013 Broadway revival starring Alec Baldwin, Ben Forster and Tom Sturridge, and a 1987 film adaptation. Set in the early eighties, Orphans introduces us to two grown orphaned brothers living in a decrepit row house in North Philadelphia. Treat, a petty criminal, is the older, sometimes violent and impulsive, brother charged with looking after his younger brother, fragile and childlike Philip. The brothers’ lives are changed forever when one night Treat brings home Harold, a mysterious older man who claims a kinship with the orphans. Thinking Harold is a wealthy businessman, Treat decides to kidnap Harold and hold him for ransom. His scheme doesn't go according to plan when Harold turns out to be not what he appears, and more than a match for the brothers. Manipulating the brothers by finding their weaknesses and filling the parental void in their lives, Harold turns the tables on the orphans. Directed by Denise Richard and starring a trio of Fredericton’s finest actors in Bard in the Barracks, NotaBle Acts, and Theatre UNB veterans John Ball and Kevin Belyea and newcomer James Lamey, Orphans is a suspenseful drama, at times hilarious and at others profoundly moving. The play will be performed nightly at 7:30pm, opening Wednesday December 2 through to Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. Tickets will be available at the door, priced at $14 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for students. For more information, phone 447-3078 or email [email protected] Back to top.

3. Exhibition Opening at the Fredericton Library Gallery: History on our Hands & Icescapes Dec 3 Beginning with its opening night on December 3 at 7pm, and running for the month of December, the Fredericton Library Gallery presents photographic artist Gary Weekes’ solo exhibitions History on our Hands and Icescapes. With History on our Hands Gary Weekes reveals the stories that individuals carry upon their hands. Using sensitive but dramatic lighting and engaging written word from his sitters he has created original works which are not only a delight to view but also to read. As a complete change of pace, Icescapes are photographic tableaus created in the mind and the garage of the Artist. These montages revel in time standing still in a cold and desolate land; thereby forcing you to look deeper, beyond the disrupted surface to the created beauty within. Two very different exhibitions, each attempting to push “photography as art”, just a little bit further. Back to top.

4. Andrew Johnston with guest Camilo at Grimross Brewing Co. Dec 3 Andrew Johnson will be playing for us in the taproom of the Grimross Brewing Co. on Dec 3 at 7:30pm; there is a $10 suggested donation. Growing up in Ottawa and now calling Montreal home, Andrew has been releasing albums under his name, or the moniker Andrew Vs. the Enabler since 2006. Prior to that he was one of the driving forces in the critically acclaimed group The Gentleman’s Club, and has also recorded and played with other artists, appearing on Jf Robitaille’s album Calendar. Recorded by Andrew and his band the Hurricane at Seratone Studios in Montreal, Brace for Impact is the precursor to the Murray Lightburn produced album The New Great Game set for release later in 2015. The E.P includes collaborations with some of Montreal’s most gifted musicians, and features a gorgeous orchestral arrangement on “Night Owl” by Ben Wilkins, as well as drumming by legendary George Donoso (Sam Roberts, the Dears, High Dials). The E.P even got the all star treatment, with a mix by Jesse Malin’s producer Don Deligo, who came onboard to mix lead-off single “Living in the Free World.” Andrew recently gained massive exposure when his song Go Get Another Dream was featured in the Joss Whedon film “In Your Eyes.” The song plays the role of a hit single, and there is dialog between Michael Stahl David and Nikki Reed about the song in the film. The song is also featured as the lead off track from Lakeshore Records original motion picture soundtrack, which also features Iron and Wine, the Lumineers, and Santigold. Back to top.

5. Branch Out Productions presents A Christmas Story: The Musical Dec 3-5 Direct from Broadway, A Christmas Story: The Musical was nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Of course he's met with a few hiccups. A kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a cranky department store Santa and a triple dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the obstacles that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas dream. 8. Cinema Politica Fredericton screens Project Power Dec 4 On Friday, December 4 at 7pm at 180 St. John St. Cinema Politica Fredericton will screen the last documentary of its fall 2015 season, Project Power (Jon Mann, 2014, 102min). Project Power is an observational documentary which follows the massive social movement against the sale of New Brunswick Power to Hydro-Quebec by the New Brunswick provincial government during the winter of 2009. A grassroots campaign against the sale of the public utility, organized by the citizens of New Brunswick, became the official opposition to the $ 4.75 billion "done deal" between the New Brunswick and Quebec governments. Battling a provincial government, a multi-national public relations firm, and a monopolized provincial media pushing the deal, New Brunswickers took to the streets, in what became a fight for more than just a power utility. This film is cohosted by the Council of Canadians, Fredericton Chapter, and some members will be around for the discussion following the film. Films are free to the public. Donations are welcome to help with network membership fees. (Washrooms are not accessible, sorry!). For more info visit http://www.cinemapolitica.org/film/project-power or the Facebook Event

18. NB Film Co-op’s Monday Night Film Series presents A Walk in the Woods (Dec 7) A Walk in the Woods December 7, 2015 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Ken Kwapis, 98 mins, USA, 2015, English Principal Cast: Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman A long-time passion project for its star Robert Redford, A Walk in the Woods adapts travel writer Bill Bryson’s acclaimed memoir of the same name into a playful road (or trail) movie about growing older and reconnecting with your past. Redford stars as Bryson, who returns home to the US after two decades in England and undertakes a 2,000-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail to get reacquainted with his native country. The trip is not without its risks, however, and his wife (Emma Thompson) demands that he find someone to accompany him on his journey. Unable to rustle up a suitable companion, Bryson turns as a last resort to Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte), a long-estranged and out-of-shape friend who is struggling with alcoholism. The pair of mismatched septuagenarians soon discovers that their trek is far more demanding than a simple “walk in the woods.” Confronted with eccentric fellow hikers and townspeople (including turns from Mary Steenburgen and Nick Offerman), unanticipated forces of nature, and the challenges of each other’s company, Bryson and Katz manage against all odds to bring out the best in each other and overcome the obstacles that face them. Staying true to the spirit of its source, the film is filled with the same wry, insightful humour that has made Bryson a household name. With standout performances by two legendary actors and the natural beauty of the Eastern United States on full display, A Walk in the Woods is an affecting and memorable journey. This year, 26 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a yearly $18 student film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632 or [email protected].
