1. Fredericton Arts Alliance presents Art Talk: How to Avoid Non Payment & Litigation in Art Sales May 2 Speaker: Bruce Gray Date: Saturday, May 2 at 2pm Place: Fredericton Public Library If you sell your art or are commissioned for art work, you run the risk of non-payment. The Fredericton Arts Alliance is offering a free talk by New Brunswick artist, Bruce Gray, to help artists learn how to protect themselves from such problems. The talk will be held on May 2 at the Fredericton Public library at 2pm. Bruce Gray is a highly esteemed and experienced New Brunswick artist who has learned how to work with “challenging” clients. He will give advice on measures to take to avoid litigation, discuss contracts which offer legal protection, provide insights into best approaches if litigation does become necessary, and discuss why artists are prone to collection issues. He will also teach participants how to “read” clients (i.e., how to detect those likely to renege or be difficult). An informative handout will be provided at this Art Talk. For more information, please contact The Fredericton Arts Alliance at www.frederictonartsalliance.ca or [email protected]; or call Sabine Campbell at 454-1139 or George Strunz at 453-1113. 2. Exposure: New Work from the New Brunswick Photography Studio Graduates of 2015 Apr 17-May 11 Come be exposed to new work by the graduating photography students from The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design from April 17-May 11 at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery. The work in this show is eclectic, showcasing the specialties of students who have been developing their styles while honing their technical abilities for the past two years in the photography studio at NBCCD. The work ranges in style, emotional content, and intent. See vivid fashion photography, fantasy inspired landscape, documentary, and portrait photography. It's bold, sensual, rustic, fantastical, whimsical, and honest. This year the photography studio is delighted to have three international students in the mix - Kehninde Akinsanya, from Lagos, Nigeria; Inderpal Singh Virk, from New Delhi, India; and Whitney Carolan, from St. Lucia. Inderpal Virk was named by PhotoLife Magazine as one of the emerging photographers to watch in Canada for 2015 and had work featured in the February issue of PhotoLife. Exposure opens Friday, April 17, 2015 and will run until May 11, 2015. Everyone is welcome. For more information please contact Karen Ruet at 457-6805 or by email [email protected]. Back to top.

3. Howard Zinn's Marx in Soho returns to Fredericton Apr 30-May 2 The Mayworks Fredericton arts festival is proud to present a return engagement of its hit production of Howard Zinn's Marx in Soho at the Black Box Theatre at St. Thomas University, from April 30 to May 2. Zinn’s acclaimed one-man play, written in 1997 and performed around the world, offers a compelling portrait of one of the most influential thinkers of the modern era. Karl Marx comes back to life to tell stories about his family and writing career, and to dispel certain myths and misinterpretations that have emerged around his ideas. "I'm not a Marxist," he insists, yet he speaks forcefully but intimately about the social and economic inequalities that continue to plague western society. Humorous, wistful, and passionate in defence of the oppressed, Zinn's Marx is an inspirational figure to spend an evening with. Starring Jeff Bate Boerop and directed by John Ball, Marx in Soho was enthusiastically received in its first run last September: as UNB history professor David Frank wrote after seeing it, “For me, Jeff Bate Boerop was the spitting image of Zinn’s Marx, and the production had all the liveliness and humour in the script, and then some. Everyone I have spoken to agrees.” Marx in Soho returns to Fredericton as a feature event in the Fredericton and District Labour Council’s Mayworks Fredericton – the festival of working people and the arts. Performances of are at 7:30pm from Thursday April 30 to Saturday, May 2, with a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. Running time of the play is approximately 85 minutes, and admission is by free-will donation at the door. Back to top.

Coming up at the Fredericton Playhouse May 6-14 May 6, 6:30pm Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada presents HOMEbody with Sharron Litzenberger HOMEbody is an exploration of identity, belonging and place through the lens of my own experience growing up on a Saskatchewan farm and later moving to the largest city in the country – Toronto. While my family’s farm is nearing its centennial anniversary, the property to the north and south of our home quarter has long been vacated, the houses left abandoned – decaying monuments of their pioneering roots. These homes represent not only an abandonment of place, but also characterize the mass exodus of my generation from rural life. HOMEbody is both an intimate portrait of my childhood prairie home and a tribute to the importance of where we come from.” - Shannon Litzenberger May 8, 7:30pm A special celebration of George Jones & Tammy Wynette: Georgette Jones & Brian Mallery The daughter of Country Music Hall of Famers George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Georgette Jones will take the stage with east coast country star Brian Mallery a special celebration show to remember May 8. 17. The Roots and Soul Music Room presents Washboard Hank May 8 On May 8 at 2pm the Roots & Soul Music Room, located at 58 Eatman Ave., presents Washboard Hank. Washboard Hank will be bringing his unique music and humor to us, and there will be an adult show in the evening at 8pm as well. Washboard Hank plays an amazing conglomeration of bells, licence plates, duck calls, etc…and actually gets music out of it! He also plays banjo, kazoo, and dobro. He will probably break a lot of guitar strings too. If the proper plumbing supplies are available and space allows you can expect a solo or two on the "Fallopian Tuba," made out of 1 1/2" PVC pipe and a stainless steel sink One reviewer called Washboard Hank "a cross between Jerry Lewis (not Jerry Lee) and Stompin' Tom Connors." His repertoire includes bluegrass, rockabilly, country, television themes and Oktoberfest. He can go from sensitive to manic to ridiculous in an instant. Don't blink, you'll miss something good. Hank has appeared on dozens of TV shows (Elephant Show, W5, Mr. Dressup, etc.) recently performed on CBC's Madly Off In All Directions, and spent the last four years as a member of Fred Eaglesmith's band, doing 200 + shows a year all over North America. Working so steadily with Fred was letting Hank's own career slide, but he's getting it built up a bit now. Tickets for the children’s show are $10/ adults; $5/ children; maximum of $20 for a family. 18. Scott Shea and Thom Swift in the Wilser’s Room May 9 Scott Shea is a honed singer songwriter, music storyteller currently living on the west coast of Canada. The son of legendary guitarist Red Shea, known for his distinctive pick work and memorable leads for Gordon Lightfoot, Scott was immersed in music from the earliest of ages. Scott wrote his first songs when he was nine, composing melodies and verses in the backseat of his father's car where he found the solitude and resonance of the guitar inspiring. By the time he was 12, he was garnering public speaking awards related to, not surprisingly, storytelling, and in his teens was winning national songwriting competitions. In the 90s Scott and his brother formed a band known as The Sheas. They attracted industry attention and landed shows with some of Canada’s best acts, before the group went their separate ways. Pair that with Thom Swift. His most recent record, The Fortunate Few continues his winning ways. 8. Auditions for Collective Theatrics’ production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood Collective Theatrics will be holding auditions for its upcoming musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Gibson Memorial United Church. Based on the unfinished Charles Dickens novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, it was the first Broadway musical with multiple endings (determined by audience). At a break in the show, the audience votes on who killed Drood, the identity of the mysterious Dick Datchery, and on which two characters will become romantically involved in the end, creating a happy ending. Since every audience differs in temperament, the outcome is theoretically unpredictable even to the actors, who must quickly tally the votes and commence with the chosen ending. Auditionees may choose from one of the pieces listed below to prepare in advance of the audition. Auditionees will also be required to do a cold reading from the show at the audition. The show will run October 1-3, 2015 at the Tom Morrison theatre at Fredericton High School. Rehearsals will begin early June 2015. The extended rehearsal process is to help compensate for missed rehearsals due to summer vacations. For further information, or to schedule an audition time, email [email protected] or visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/557578371011668/. Character descriptions are available on the Facebook event. For those unable to schedule an audition time on May 12, there are limited spaces available for Sunday, May 10. This special evening and all supporting activities and endeavours presented by the centre will be known as Third Shift. Third Shift will occupy a small section of the Trinity Royal historic district between 7pm and 12am on August 21, 2015. Third Shift aims to inspire Saint John residents to reimagine their city, reclaim vacant and under-utilized areas and engage with the Trinity Royal historic district of the uptown area. We are encouraging artists to propose projects that employ the use of sound, light, sculpture, and performance. All Third Shift activities are free and open to the public.

Although this project will take place in St. John, Fredericton-based artists are welcome and encouraged to apply,

Project proposals will be reviewed and selected by a committee of Third Space Gallery members,

Artists are encouraged to specify the preferred location for their projects. Given the mysterious nature of the area for artists who are from out of town, Third Space Gallery is happy to work with selected artists to find appropriate spaces for their projects. Third Space Gallery will be paying selected artists an honorarium fee in accordance to the 2015 CARFAC fee schedule. The fee will be paid in 50% increments before and after the completion of the project. Third Space Gallery cannot provide financial assistance for project materials or equipment, but if you advise the Committee of any specific needs, they will help facilitate your project to the best of their ability. All projects must be prepared for inclement weather. Third Space Gallery will not be covering damage to art or installations. Participating artists will be required to sign a waiver to this effect.
