1. ARC Presents Two New Exhibitions in THE NNEX June 16 - Sept 12 I am not a romantic. I am the victim of a loveless heart: The four photographic prints in this installation-work by Nicole Kelly Westman document the meandering thoughts that make up parts of the experience of the everyday. Using the vernacular of stream-of-consciousness writing, each panel tours us through the vague romances of memory, recalling awkward moments that would otherwise escape documentation. With each text speaking to unidentified companions, we are left to imagine their relationship to the speaker.

THE DUMPS: Always and For Never: Alisa Arsenault’s project for Connexion ARC explores the ever-shifting stories of her mother’s former relationships, the telling and retelling of these anecdotes and how they morph through time and retelling. In a video playing along the far wall of the gallery, the artist enacts imagined conversations between her mother and her mother’s former lovers. Taking up these unstable narratives, Arsenault highlights their distance from lived reality. Masks and other ephemera stand enshrined along the adjacent wall, recalling family photographs and teen idol worship. Alisa Arsenault is a contemporary artist based in Moncton who uses video and installation to explore the ephemeral and malleable construction of reality through narrative. These exhibitions run from June 16 – September 12, 2014 at the NNEX Gallery, with a closing reception on September 12, at 5pm. Both artists will be in attendance. THE NNEX is Connexion ARC’s project space, located at The Fredericton Playhouse (686 Queen Street). Professional exhibitions in this space pair an exhibition by a New Brunswick based artist with an exhibition by an out-of-province artist. NNEX exhibitions are made possible through the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, The Government of New Brunswick, The City of Fredericton and The Fredericton Playhouse.

Auditions | Call for Artist Submissions & Awards

1. Call for Submissions: NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival’s My Most Cherished Letter How long has it been since you received a thoughtful hand written letter? NotaBle Acts Artist in Residence/Festival Dramaturg, Heather Inglis is seeking handwritten letters to be featured as part of a Performance Installation My Most Cherished Letter, presented on July 28 and 29 as part of the NotaBle Acts Festival. My Most Cherished Letter will animate cherished handwritten letters sourced from Fredericton and area. Receiving a handwritten letter is becoming an experience of the past. In the world of electronic media we write increasingly short notes that are delivered instantly. We take less time with our communication and in turn it gets less precise. Handwriting is becoming a skill we no longer need; but receiving a loving written letter was once one of the most significant experiences in a person’s life. Not so long ago, letter writing was both an art and an act of love. My Most Cherished Letter celebrates letters and letter writing via interactive performance installation. Fredericton and area residents are invited contact Ms. Inglis to set up an appointment to share their cherished letters with her. The letters will not be damaged or altered in any way. Messages can be left at 452-6356 or 458-7406 or via email at [email protected].

2. Youth Advantage Project for Culture Inc. If possible, artwork(s) need to be submitted no less than two days before the event; on July 24, 2014. The Youth Advantage Project for Culture assists underprivileged youth from the ages of 8 to 17 in pursuing their individual dreams and interests. We offer up to $250 in scholarships to fund youth with tutors, courses in art (visual or digital), dance, music, acting, etc., in order to assist them in pursuing their dreams and reaching their own goals. We also hope to branch out into smaller communities and support youth who do not have immediate access to the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. We look forward to working together as we strive for a world where no child is left behind and every child is given equal recreational opportunities—especially in the arts!
