Marking the first collaboration between two of contemporary cinema’s most acclaimed and admired actors—Academy Award winners Colin Firth (Magic in the Moonlight, The King’s Speech) and Nicole Kidman (Grace of Monaco, Stoker)—The Railway Man recounts the incredible true story of Eric Lomax, a British soldier who endured gruelling conditions as a forced labourer on the infamous “Death Railway” between Bangkok and Rangoon after being captured by Japanese troops during World War II. A quiet, middle-aged radio and railway enthusiast, Lomax (Firth) meets Patti Wallace (Kidman) on a Scottish train in 1983. After a whirlwind courtship, the couple are married— but on their wedding night, and for many nights to come, Eric is gripped by paralyzing nightmares that he refuses to explain to his new bride. Confused and hurt by her husband’s remoteness, Patti turns to Eric’s friend Finlay (Stellan Skarsgård, Melancholia), who finally reveals Eric’s harrowing story. Along with thousands of other British soldiers captured by the Japanese army, Eric was forced to work on the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway, which claimed the lives of more than 10,000 Allied POWs and 90,000 enslaved civilians during the war—and in addition to the memory of this torment, Eric still bears the psychic scars of his brutal torture at the hands of a Japanese officer. Realizing that there is only one way to save her marriage, Patti sets out in search of this man whose shadow still haunts her husband’s mind and soul. Ida September 29, 2014, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Pawel Pawlikowski Poland, 2013 Polish with English subtitles 80 minutes Principal Cast: Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska In Poland, few subjects are as controversial and emotionally charged as the relations between Catholics and Jews during the Nazi occupation. Following his success in England with films like Last Resort and My Summer of Love, director Pawel Pawlikowski has returned to his native country for the first time in his career to address one of his homeland’s most sensitive and painful topics. The result is one of the year’s most powerful and affecting films, which was awarded the FIPRESCI Special Presentations prize at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and Best Film at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival. In 1960s Poland, Anna is a novitiate nun about to take her vows. Instructed by her Mother Superior to visit her aunt prior to withdrawing into the religious life, the prim Anna meets her mother’s sister Wanda, a raven-haired sensualist and former state prosecutor, who reveals some heretofore unknown information about Anna’s past— including her real name, Ida. This launches a remarkable journey into the countryside, where secrets both familial and national are darkly, inextricably intertwined. Shooting in black and white and using the 1.37:1 Academy ratio (the almost-square frame of classic cinema), Pawlikowski crafts a masterful drama, which balances the intimate and personal with the historical. As the two women unearth ever more details about their family’s painful past, their search illuminates some of the darkest corners of Poland’s history under both fascist occupation and communist autocracy. Brilliantly structured, elegantly shot and impeccably executed, Ida will have all who see it reaching for superlatives. This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular admission is $7; Member’s admission is $4. January-April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and up)/NBFC Members). Memberships are available at the door. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632, [email protected], or http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/exhibition/monday-night-film-series. The NB Film Co-op in partnership with the UNB Faculty of Arts and the Toronto Film Festival presents the series. Back to top.

5. UNB Art Centre presents Lucy Jarvis: Sketches and Letters Sept 19- Nov 7 Lucy Jarvis: Sketches and Letters is a testament to a life well-lived. This exhibition explores the artist’s development, artistic process and lust for life through a display of letters, notes, photographs, sketchbooks and other ephemera curated by respected art historian Roslyn Rosenfeld. Selected from over 75 sketchbooks, the sketches in this exhibit show the artist’s evolution from the academic training received at the School Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the 1920s to the expressive drawings and paintings of her later years. These sketchbooks and letters provide a unique glimpse into the artist’s life and philosophy through the subjects she captured, the travels she chronicled, the thoughts she documented and the media with which she experimented.

It is important to bear in mind that during the past year, both organizations met with each of the four parties to support the following:

Recognition of the artist as a profession (the Premier’s Working Group on the Status of the Artist began its work in June, 2014)

Revision of the Cultural Policy (adopted in June, 2014)

In each of the next four years, a $4-million increase to the budget of arts, culture, and heritage, to implement the recommendations of the revised Cultural Policy (an initial increase of $3 million was approved in February, 2014)

The AAAPNB and ArtsLink NB would like to remind New Brunswickers of the important contribution arts and culture make to our province. The sector facilitates dialogue among our various communities, plays an important role in the education of our youth, has a positive effect on our collective well-being, and encourages a higher level of citizen participation. In 2010 the sector brought $910 million to the provincial economy (MQO Research 2012). In May 2014 11,800 workers were employed in New Brunswick’s information, culture, and leisure sector, which is higher than that of, forestry, fishing, mining/related extractive industries, and as well as oil and gas combined. (Statistics Canada, Table 282-2010). In addition to this, 99.7% of New Brunswickers took part in at least one artistic, cultural, or heritage activity in 2010 (Hill Strategies Research, 2012). The AAAPNB and ArtsLink NB encourage all media outlets to include discussion of arts and culture in the televised leaders’ debates. Back to top.

17. NFB Announces the Winners of the Tremplin 2014 Competition The winners of the Tremplin 2014 contest, organized by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in collaboration with Radio-Canada, are: Stéphanie David (from Dieppe, New Brunswick), Francine Hébert (from Cocagne, New Brunswick), Katia Café-Fébrissy (from Toronto, Ontario) and Marie Ka (from North Vancouver, British Columbia). They were selected from a group of 12 finalists who were part of a pool of applicants from francophone communities across Canada. Tremplin is open to emerging French-speaking filmmakers residing outside Quebec who wish to make a first or second professional documentary. This eighth Canada-wide edition gives winners a chance to direct a 20-minute documentary short under professional conditions and with the NFB’s expert guidance and support as a producer. The four films will be broadcast on Radio-Canada, the NFB’s Tremplin competition partner. The Tremplin jury included Marie-Claude Dupont, Programming Director, Radio-Canada Regional Services; Dominic Desjardins, Executive Producer, Canadian Francophonie Studio, NFB; Maryse Chapdelaine, Producer, Canadian Francophonie Studio – Acadie, NFB; Renée Blanchar and Luc Bourdon, filmmakers. Renée Blanchar led the scripting workshop in Moncton for the finalists from Acadie and Luc Bourdon led the workshop in Toronto for finalists from Central and Western Canada. The contest reflects the NFB’s mandate to discover and promote emerging Canadian documentary filmmaking talent. By providing access to hands-on production experience, the competition allows filmmakers to cross an important threshold in their careers. For Radio-Canada, broadcasting the work of these young Canadian filmmakers is an important means of addressing key contemporary issues that cover the spectrum of human experience. All films produced for the Tremplin competition have been broadcast on Radio-Canada. Those produced by the 2014 winners will be no exception. Short films made by past Tremplin winners have had successful screenings at events such as the Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie—winning a total of seven awards, including two for Daniel Léger’s Un dimanche à 105 ans (A Sunday at 105), one of the most popular films on ONF.ca—the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal and the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois, where Emma fait son cinema (Emma Makes Movies) by Mélanie Léger won the award for Best Franco-Canadian Film in 2014.
