DearFriends, TheWord “communication,”with all of its various connotations, is nowabasic elementofmodernliving. We have, for example, themass communication systems of the internet,Wi-Fi, cell phones, socialmedia, and of course we still have landline telephones, television, radio, newspapers and magazines—allhavingbecomeessentialtomuchofourmoderncommerce, politicsandeducation.Perhaps, mostamazingofthese, inmyownmind, continuetobecommunicationsystemsbetweencontrolstationsonearthandspacecapsulesasfarawayasMars! Allofthesesystemsgiveamechanical formandstructuretotheconceptof“communication.” Butincreasinglywearealsoemphasizingthevitalimportanceof“humancommunication,”bythiswemeananexchangewhichwouldreacheachperson,inpersonalandhumanway.Wehaveallfelttheneedforthistypeofcommunication.Whenweareinsomeconflict,frustratedorlonely,forexample,orwhenwejustfeel really happy about something, we seek out a friend to talk to. Other people, too, when they needsomeonemightseekusoutinasimilarway. Whattakesplacebetweenusthen, isthatspecialexchangeofideasandfeelingswecall“humancommunication.” Today’sGospelReading also concerns thismost human formofcommunication. But here, Jesus is presentedwith amanwho cannotcommunicate in the ordinary way. This dead man with a speechimpedimentisbroughttoJesusbyhisfriends. Theyyearntoreachhim,to talkwith him, to share thoughts and experienceswith him. So, infaith, theyaskJesustofreehimfromhisisolation. Jesus, respondingtothe faith of these friends and the love they held for the deaf man,performedahealingmiracle.AsSt.Marktellsus,“Andimmediatelytheman’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.” Jesus restorescommunicationbetweenthedeafmanandhisfriends. Wetoo, yearntocommunicatewithotherpeople. Themasscommunicationsystemsoftoday, aresoefficient, that they are now essential to our lifestyles. But even these, in themselves, do not provide thewarmththatthepresenceofanotherpersonbrings. Wecanbelonelywithalloftoday’ssocialmediaforms, withinternetusageandallofourfancy“smart”phonesaroundus. Weexperiencethesameneedtoreachand share with others, then, as the people did in today’s Gospel. Like them, we can find our efforts atcommunication blocked. The deaf man with the speech and hearing difficulty sharply symbolizes suchimpediments. Sometimes, wefindthatwecannotreallyhearorunderstandwhatanotherperson istrying, oftenwith pain, to say. Similarly,we find ourselves, at times, unable tomake clear to someone else ourthoughtsandfeelings.Theydonotseemtobehearingus. ThiswasthepainofthepeoplewhowenttoJesustoday. TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 5 SEPTEMBER 9, 2018

In today’s Gospel, (Mark 7: 31-37) we hear how Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!

On September 9, the Church also celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are were poor and suffering.

In living the gospel, we must open our ears to hear and recognize all the everyday opportunities for making God’s presence known, especially to those who find themselves suffering and are in need.

Is there an individual or family you know in our Northville community who needs assistance? Please have them call OLV’s

SVdP hotline (248) 349-2622, so together we can make God’s presence known to those who need help.

If you want to learn more about OLV’s St. Vincent de Paul Ministry, please leave your name and contact information on the OLV St. Vincent de Paul Hotline at (248) 349-2622 or e-mail to: [email protected] and one of our Vincentians will contact you. Or join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m., in the Neumann room.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 8 SEPTEMBER 9, 2018

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as TheGodDelusion and GodIsNotGreat. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God?

In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Bishop Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean by “God.”

OnTuesday, September 25, our Parishwill begin theMystery of God:WhoGod Is andWhyHeMatters, program. Thisweekly,6-weekprogramwillrunonTuesdaysform9-11a.m.,intheJohnXXIIIroom.
