TRANSCRIPT
A nurturing community in Jesus Christ reflecting God’s love for the world
as we Worship, Grow and Serve.
September 12, 2021
Welcome and Announcements
We are glad you joined us for worship today! Please take a moment and sign the red
friendship pad and let us know you joined us in worship today!
* Preparing Our Hearts for Worship “Bind Us Together” David Cherwien
(this is a prayer we will sing to prepare our hearts for worship) First time through Praise Band,
second time congregation joins in.
Bind us together, Lord;
Bind us together with cords that can not be broken.
Bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together, Lord;
Bund us together with love.
* Call To Worship (responsive) Psalm 19
One: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day
to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
All: here is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes
out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
One: In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom from his
wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
All: Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and noth-
ing is hid from its heat.
* Hymn 475 “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing nettleton
Come, thou Fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
mount of God’s unchanging love!
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart; O take and seal it;
seal it for thy courts above.
Prayer Of The Day (unison)
Dearest and most wonderful God who Jesus taught us was our father, our parent loving us like a
father watches over his children and like a mother guards those who are hers, we come to you in
prayer for in you is wisdom, in you is hope, in you is life. You call us out of our small worlds and
our narrow vision to a place to see the world as you do. You called forth Abraham and Sarah
from a world of false gods to a land that flowed with milk and honey, and Moses led us from
slavery to freedom through the Red Sea. But we turned away. Yet you did not lose patience with
us, but through the voice of the prophets you once again beckoned for us to follow, and though
we might take a few steps on the path that you set for us, we were destined to wander. Finally,
out of your love for us and our brokenness you sent your son to call us and lead us. Today he
asks his disciples and us, “Who do you say that I am.” And we wonder can we truly say you are
our Lord and Savior and we will follow you all the way to the cross. Peter felt a deep fear when
Jesus told him that the way ended in the cross and Peter rebuked him. He rebuked Peter saying
“Get behind me Satan.” Peter could not fathom the depth of your son’s call and we too find
ourselves wondering if it could be true. We hear his words, "If any want to become my followers,
let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life
will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.”
And we shutter. You demand much of us. We want to follow, but we are comfortable where we
are and not ready for such change. Please strengthen us for the journey that is ahead that we
may truly follow you even if it takes us to the foot of the cross, for in you is the one true place of
life. Amen
Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession (unison)
Jesus asks us, “Who do you say that I am.” We want to answer as Peter did "You are the
Messiah," but we know that it comes with consequences that like Peter we are not sure we can
face them. We can see that the times they are changing and that we need to find a way to bring
those changes into our lives and into our worshiping community. But it is hard and challenging
work and demands deep commitment. We are just not sure that we have the energy. We are not
sure that we want to change. The river of life is flowing all around us, and we cling to a rock in
the middle of the river fearing what might come downstream. Open us, Lord, to trust that you
are that river and that if we move into its flow it will be your hand that we guide us. May we
become new people through your son, Jesus Christ. Who held on to no rocks, walked our dusty
roads, and placed his life, wellbeing and total faith in you. It is through his faith and love that we
can find a way forward. Amen
Silent Prayer of Confession
Assurance of Pardon
• Song “Living Hope” Wickham
How great the chasm that lay between us.
How high the mountain I could not climb.
In desperation I turned to heaven
and spoke Your name into the night.
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
tore through the shadows of my soul.
The work is finished, the end is written.
Jesus Christ, my living hope.
Who could imagine so great a mercy?
What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory
to wear my sin and bear my shame.
The cross has spoken; I am forgiven.
The King of kings calls me His own.
Beautiful Savior, I’m Yours forever.
Jesus Christ my living hope.
(chorus) Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free!
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me!
You have broken every chain.
There’s salvation in Your name.
Jesus Christ my living hope.
Then came the morning that sealed the promise,
Your buried body began to breathe.
Out of the silence, the roaring lion
declared the grave has no claim on me.
(chorus 2 times)
(ending) Jesus Christ my living hope.
O God, You are my living hope.
Prayer for Illumination (unison)
Guide us, O God, by your Word and Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover your peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scriptures Proverbs 1:20-33; Mark 8:27-38
Proverbs 1:20-33
Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I
will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you
refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you have ignored all my counsel
and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes
you, when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and
anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me
diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the
LORD, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit
of their way and be sated with their own devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the compla-
cency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without
dread of disaster."
This is the word of our Lord
Thanks be to God.
Mark 8:27-38
Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disci-
ples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and
still others, one of the prophets." He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him,
"You are the Messiah." And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to
teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief
priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter
and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human
things." He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers,
let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life
will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For
what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in re-
turn for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful genera-
tion, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the
holy angels."
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Sermon “Who Do You Say Jesus Is? ” Rev. Eric Markman
* Hymn 157 “I Danced in the Morning” lord of the dance
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth.
At Bethlehem I had my birth.
(refrain) Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
and I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I'll lead you all in the dance, said he.
I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
but they would not dance and they would not follow me.
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John.
They came with me and the dance went on. (refrain)
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame.
The holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,
and left me there on a cross to die. (refrain)
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black.
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I'd gone,
but I am the dance and I still go on. (refrain) (cont. on next page)
They cut me down and I leapt up high.
I am the life that will never, never die.
I'll live in you if you'll live in me,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. (refrain)
* Affirmation of Faith (responsive) Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into
hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness
of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
* Song “Great I Am” Anderson
I wanna be close, close to Your side
so Heaven is real and death is a lie;
I wanna hear voices of angels above
singing as one.
(chorus) Hallelujah, holy, holy,
God Almighty, great I Am;
Who is worthy, none beside Thee;
God Almighty, great I Am.
I wanna be near near, to Your heart,
Loving the world, hating the dark;
I wanna see dry bones living again
singing as one.
(chorus)
The mountains shake before You;
The demons run and flee
at the mention of Your name, King of majesty;
There is no pow'r in hell or any who can stand
before the power and the Presence of the great I Am.
The great I Am. (5 times)
(chorus)

Prayers of Intercession and Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
* Hymn 722 “Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak” canonbury
Lord, speak to me that I may speak
in living echoes of your tone.
As you have sought, so let me seek
your erring children lost and lone.
O lead me, Lord, that I may lead
the wandering and the wavering feet.
O feed me, Lord, that I may feed
your hungering ones with manna sweet.
O teach me, Lord, that I may teach
the precious truths which you impart.
And wing my words that they may reach
the hidden depths of many a heart.
O fill me with your fullness, Lord,
until my very heart o'erflow
in kindling thought and glowing word,
your love to tell, your praise to show.
O use me, Lord, use even me,
just as you will, and when, and where
until your blessed face I see,
your rest, your joy, your glory share.
* Charge and Benediction
* Song of Sending “Shine, Jesus Shine Kendrick
Lord, the light of Your love is shining,
in the midst of the darkness shining;
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us,
set us free by the truth You now bring us,
shine on me, shine on me.
(chorus) Shine Jesus shine, fill this land with the Father's glory;
Blaze Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth Your word, Lord, and let there be light.
Lord I come to Your awesome presence,
from the shadows into Your radiance;
By the blood I may enter Your brightness,
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness.
Shine on me. shine on me.
(chorus)
As we gaze on Your kingly brightness,
so our faces display Your likeness;
Ever changing from glory to glory,
mirrored here may our lives tell your story.
Shine on me, shine, on me.
(chorus)
