  • Christie, 9 other presidential hopefuls spar overdomestic security, more in lively Cleveland debate

    Ahighly anticipated Republican presidential candi-

    date debate lived up to its billing Thursday night

    and featured an all-out verbal slugfest involving

    New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, with a rival pok-

    ing Christie about his hug of President Barack

    Obama in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

    Christie and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky have long

    disagreed on what constitutes proper government surveil-

    lance to combat terrorism. They argued again over the Patri-

    ot Act and the role of the National Security Agency.

    But this time Christie yelled at Paul, and Paul got back by

    bringing up whats known in conservative circles as the

    A Holmdel man has been arrested and charged in theMonday night shooting that critically injured two menoutside a hip-hop concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center,state police said Thursday.

    Quran Powell, 27, was charged with attempted homi-cide, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose andcertain persons not to possess a firearm. He was arrest-ed Wednesday in East Orange and is being held at theMonmouth County jail on $750,000 bail with no 10 per-cent option.

    New Jersey State Police and the Monmouth CountyProsecutors Office identified Powell as a suspect andsecured a search warrant for Powells home. It was sub-sequently learned he was possibly hiding in East Or-ange, where he was later arrested.

    Powell previously was convicted in 2012 on drugmanufacturing and/or drug distribution charges, ac-cording to Superior Court records. He received oneyear of probation.

    The shooting at the PNC Bank Arts Center parkinglot left two men in critical but stable condition. Theshooting happened around 11 p.m. The victims, ages 23and 24, both of Neptune, were shot multiple times, au-thorities said. Their names were not released.

    The shooting capped a busy evening for law enforce-ment at the arts center. At least 102 people were arrest-ed, many on charges of disorderly conduct and resist-ing arrest, state police said previously.

    The arena was hosting the J. Cole: Forest Hills DriveTour, featuring hip-hop artists J. Cole, YC, Big Sean andJeremih.
