Somemes it may seem that we make too much of this online connecon with others. Perhaps we fear it will impede our abilies for personal, real contact. Or me may think it opens the door to invasions of our privacy and security. Whether this is a danger or not, we cannot ignore social me- dia. And, it has some benefits as far as maintaining contacts with others. Good as the leer might be or perhaps a phone call, they were oſten infrequent, and long- distance relaonships were harder to maintain with family and friends. The various forms of social media provide the opportunity for connual and immediate connecons. They assist us in remain- ing in touch with one another. They offer us a type of presence with one another. Social media constute a useful way to see the role of the ascension in our faith and life. When the Scriptures speak of the ascension, it may seem that Jesus is somehow leaving his disci- ples. But when we look more closely at the Gospel accounts it is clear that they speak of Jesus both leaving and at the same me staying. In fact, Jesus remains among his disciples. The classic image of the ascension of Jesus is captured in the story that we find in the Acts of the Apostles. The writer of the Acts tells the story of the earliest Chrisan communies aſter the resurrecon of Jesus. Acts begins the story with the account of Jesus leaving the disciples and ascending to heaven, or put another way with the return of Jesus to the Father. It is, however a story of “leaving yet remaining.” Aſter telling of the appearances of the risen one to the disciples and of the way in which Jesus promised them the giſt of the Holy Spirit, the disciples are called upon to be the witnesses to all they have heard and seen, that is, to the message and the mission of Jesus. Filled with the promised Spirit, they are to take what they have experienced to the whole world, to the ends of the earth. In this way the disciples have been given two important pieces of their call as followers of Jesus – the giſt of Jesus presence in the Spirit and the sharing of his mission. Thus, they are to be the ongoing presence of the risen Jesus for our world. Every one of us has received the giſt of the Spirit. We acknowledge it at every bapsm and every Eucharist. We are the real presence of Jesus for our world. That is the point of what Mahew’s Gospel reveals in the “Sermon on the Mount” and in what we have come to call “The Beatudes”. If we live these Beatudes, we are the connuing presence, the real presence of the risen Jesus. Jesus leaves and yet remains and the Kingdom of God is built through Jesus, in us. Fr. John Jennings

Ascension: A Story of Leaving Yet Remaining Whether we like it or not, social media has made a huge impact on us and on our time. Sometimes it may seem that we make too much of this online connection with others. Perhaps we fear it will impede our abilities for personal, real contact. Or me may think it opens the door to invasions of our privacy and security. Whether this is a danger or not, we cannot ignore social me-dia. And, it has some benefits as far as maintaining contacts with others. Good as the letter might be or perhaps a phone call, they were often infrequent, and long-distance relationships were harder to maintain with family and friends. The various forms of social media provide the opportunity for continual and immediate connections. They assist us in remain-ing in touch with one another. They offer us a type of presence with one another.

Social media constitute a useful way to see the role of the ascension in our faith and life. When the Scriptures speak of the ascension, it may seem that Jesus is somehow leaving his disci-ples. But when we look more closely at the Gospel accounts it is clear that they speak of Jesus both leaving and at the same time staying. In fact, Jesus remains among his disciples.

The classic image of the ascension of Jesus is captured in the story that we find in the Acts of the Apostles. The writer of the Acts tells the story of the earliest Christian communities after the resurrection of Jesus. Acts begins the story with the account of Jesus leaving the disciples and ascending to heaven, or put another way with the return of Jesus to the Father. It is, however a story of “leaving yet remaining.”

After telling of the appearances of the risen one to the disciples and of the way in which Jesus promised them the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples are called upon to be the witnesses to all they have heard and seen, that is, to the message and the mission of Jesus. Filled with the promised Spirit, they are to take what they have experienced to the whole world, to the ends of the earth. In this way the disciples have been given two important pieces of their call as followers of Jesus – the gift of Jesus presence in the Spirit and the sharing of his mission. Thus, they are to be the ongoing presence of the risen Jesus for our world. Every one of us has received the gift of the Spirit. We acknowledge it at every baptism and every Eucharist. We are the real presence of Jesus for our world. That is the point of what Matthew’s Gospel reveals in the “Sermon on the Mount” and in what we have come to call “The Beatitudes”. If we live these Beatitudes, we are the continuing presence, the real presence of the risen Jesus. Jesus leaves and yet remains and the Kingdom of God is built through Jesus, in us.

this ministry, we need more volunteers, including a coordinator/s. If you can help,

there is a sign up sheet at the back of the church, you can also call Sheryl at 622-5720

phone calls, helped in the kitchen or donated food over the years, we hope you know
