From Mike, Margaret, Karrah and Aaron

In a dank cave along the banks of the Gave River – just outside of Lourdes, France – a young French girl by the name of Bernadette Soubirous had a vision of the Virgin Mary on the morning of February 11

th, 1858. She witnessed eighteen apparitions between

February and July. Bernadette was just fourteen years of age when the apparitions began. At first, she was judged to be delusional. Bernadette did not know who the lady was, and neither did she ask, they would simply pray the rosary together. Eventually, her pastor told her to ask the lady in white who she was, and when Bernadette did so, she said she was the Immaculate Conception, a name, a title, Bernadette would not have easily related to or even understood. This was enough to convince her local priest that she was not delusional, and had encountered the presence of the Virgin Mary. For one hundred and sixty years, Lourdes has been a place of pilgrimage. There have been many miraculous healings. Once I was with some pilgrims, and one of the ladies in the group who had lost her sight, received it back. But one does not go to Lourdes to witness physical healing, but to experience the loving, and healing presence of God, through His Son, Jesus Christ. Mary always leads us into the presence of her Son. In Lourdes the sick always have priority, and are treated with the most profound love and respect. It reminds us that those who are physically weak and vulnerable have pride of place in God’s heart. The ministry of Jesus proves this is so, just read the Gospels.

As today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11th), our

Patronal Feast (and Diamond Jubilee Year), we will use prayers and readings in honor of the Virgin Mary. Before the final blessing at the Saturday Vigil Mass, and at our Sunday morning Masses, we will pray a decade of the rosary. Following today’s 9:30 Mass, a free Continental Breakfast is served in the School Cafeteria. After our Sunday evening Mass, as they do each night in Lourdes, we will have a Candlelight Procession, followed by Pizza and Wine in the School Cafeteria. This is a very special day and we want to celebrate it accordingly.

On Wednesday, February 14th

, we begin the Season of Lent, a season of fasting and abstinence. Ashes are distributed at all Masses: 7:00 and 9:00am, 1:30 and 7:00pm. Yes, it is Valentine’s Day, an appropriate day to begin this season of grace and opportuni-ty, as we focus and reflect on the depth and power of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus, His Son. Let’s make it the best Lent ever! I am very excited about our Lenten Jubilee Mission, presented by ValLimar Jensen, from February 24–28. ValLimar is an international singer and speaker, and the last time I saw her was with Pope Francis at World Youth Day in Poland.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have made a pledge to the Annual Pastoral Appeal. I hope and pray that every household in the parish will make a gift to the essential mission of Christ’s Church across the five counties of the Diocese.

FORMED FEATURE OF THE WEEK Bernard Guillaumet, a non-Christian French journalist, is assigned the job of doing a story on Lourdes in the late 1990s. Just before he leaves for Lourdes, Bernard learns that his wife is pregnant. However, he is not told that this pregnancy could put her life at risk--and that doctors are suggesting an abortion.

While researching for his report on Lourdes, Bernard comes across the pages of an old family manuscript. The manuscript was written by his ancestor, Henri Guillaumet, a positivist scientist and nonbeliever who met Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858, a meeting which profoundly affected Henri and forced him to reconsider the miracles performed following the apparitions of the Madonna of Lourdes. One of the most important miracles H. Giullaumet had to reconsider was the healing of his wife Claire, who had been on her death bed as a result of tuberculosis, and was completely restored by the miraculous waters of the grotto in which Bernadette saw Our Lady.

This intriguing film uses the pages of the manuscript to trace the stories of three lives—Bernadette, Henry, and Bernard—three characters whose lives intertwine as they pursue parallel journeys according to the designs of Providence. Check out more features at www.formed.org! PARISH CODE: 4M3GQG

2018 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL Everyone should have received their personal invitation from Bishop Parkes for participation in the 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal. Remember that APA not only assists our parish in fulfilling our commitment to the ministries, programs, and services of our larger Church, but also helps to provide the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of thousands that we could not serve from our parish alone. Your pledge or gift to APA on behalf of our parish funds these services that are essential to advance the mission of Christ and help those in need. While reflecting on your own blessings, consider how you can bring the joy of Jesus Christ to someone in need. If you have any questions about APA, the services it funds, or how it benefits our parish, please call our parish office or visit our diocesan website at www.dosp.org/apa. If you have not yet responded, please know we want and need your participation! Every gift, every prayer, and every sacrifice brings hope to someone seeking the love and mercy of Christ. Be part of that blessing!

Thank you to all Parishioners and Visitors

We are blessed to have such a loving parish family. You are always in our prayers!

Thank you to Area Printing for donating the design and set-up for the candle guards being

used in the procession today.

LEND A HAND Parish volunteers are needed to occasionally "Lend A Hand" to fellow parishioners. Through volunteers we offer one-time or temporary services to parishioners, assisting with small chores normally done by homeowners them-selves, but which they cannot perform due to a temporary inability or illness. Examples of services include changing light bulbs or smoke alarm batteries, minor home repairs, walking dogs, yard clean-up, grocery shopping or moving light furniture. Work requiring a permit or professional licensure is not included. For more information or to volunteer, contact Antje Anderson at (727) 656-9741 or [email protected].

KEEPING A HOLY LENT: PRAY · FAST · GIVE ALMS

Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness.

• Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal

another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

• Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Lenten Almsgiving Our Lenten Almsgiving will be directed to Catholic Relief Services (Rice Bowls) and to our Twin Parish and School, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Acul des Pins, Haiti.

• At all the Masses on Ash Wednesday you are invited to take a Rice Bowl. We are asking each household, as part of our Lenten journey, to fill the rice bowl through sacrificial gifts. With your support every year, the Catholic community in the United States assists more than 100 million of the world’s poorest people. Rice Bowls will be collected on Holy Thursday, March 29, at the Mass of the Last Supper.

• Our Twin Parish and School, Sacred Heart of Jesus located in Acul Des Pins, Haiti is also part of our Lenten Almsgiving. Please visit the display located in the Narthex beginning on Ash Wednesday. Please use the special envelopes provided in the pews and place them in the Sunday offertory collection or return them to the parish office.

DAILY MASS DURING LENT

Beginning February 15, there will be an additional daily Mass

at 7:00am.

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP PARKES CONCERNING ASH WEDNESDAY,

FEBRUARY 14 Bishop Parkes has received questions regarding whether a dispensation from the discipline of fasting and abstinence will be granted on Ash Wednesday as it coincides with Valentine’s Day. He is not inclined to grant a dispensation from this discipline for two main reasons:

1) Ash Wednesday is one of only two days on the liturgical calendar (the other being Good Friday) when fasting and abstinence are observed by Catholics and

2) For most people, Valentine’s Day is primarily a secular celebration rather than a religious observance. Members of the faithful may be encouraged to observe Valentine’s Day with greater simplicity, due to its convergence with Ash Wednesday or they may choose to celebrate the holiday on Tuesday, February 13 or even during the previous weekend (February 10/11).
