I didn’t know that about

ChRIstmAs In Britain, eating mince pies at Christmas dates back to the 16th century. It is still believed that to eat a mince pie on each of the Twelve Days of Christmas will bring 12 happy months in the year to follow – so now you have a good excuse!

Festivities were banned by Puritan leader, Oliver Cromwell, who considered

feasting and revelry, on what was supposed to be a holy day, to be immoral. The

only celebration was by a sermon and a prayer service.The ban was lifted only

when the Puritans lost power in 1660.

The Yule log custom was handed down from the Druids (ancient pagan priests). During the ancient 12-day Christmas celebration, the log burned was called the “Yule log.” Sometimes a piece of the Yule log would be kept to kindle the fire the following winter, to ensure that the good luck carried on from year to year.

Frankincense is a sweet smelling gum resin derived from certain Boswellia trees which, at the time of Christ, grew in Arabia, India, and Ethiopia. Tradition says that it was presented to the Christ Child by Balthasar, the black king from Ethiopia or Saba. The frankincense trade was at its height during the days of the Roman Empire. At that time this resin was considered as valuable as gems or precious metals. The Romans burned frankincense on their altars and at cremations.

1.75 miles/3km

From Linton’s car park cross the road (with care) into Ridgecar park (summer only). Walk out of the rear past a seat ontoa grass path and in about 50m turn left onto a ride. Remain onthis gently descending ride, ignoring another that bears offright, for about 400m.

On both left and right are linear quarries,now filled with scrub and trees. Suchquarries dot the Forest landscape andprovided stone for roads. Typical heathlandbirds such as nightjar, stonechat, tree pipitand woodlark usually breed in this area andthe ride edges in particular are one of thebest places on the Forest (indeed in Sussex)to see, in May, the yellow flowers of thesmall spiny shrub, petty whin.

The ride bears left, then right through a break in the quarriesand continues descending for 400m to a metalled drive (SandyLane) . On the left is a bowling green and ahead are thecricket pitch and pavilion of Coleman’s Hatch Cricket Club.

On the hill-top in the distance is Gills Lap Clump, the Galleons Lapof the Winnie-the-Pooh books. One old name for the Clump was TheCamel’s Hump, from the shape formed by the silhouettes of its pinetrees. In the 1920s, when the picture (left) was taken, there werevery few trees on the surrounding slopes, just open heathland.

Cross the drive and walk to the right of the cricket pitch. Wherethe ride divides, bear right, leaving the pitch, and bear rightat the next divide after 300m . The ride descends more steeplyand swings right and downhill into woodland and to a bridgeover a stream .

This area is known as Tabell Ghyll. Itswoodland is most unusual for the publicpart of the Forest with its many largetrees, especially beech, and severalhectares of planted sweet chestnutcoppice. The area was sold off from thecommon land of the Forest in 1693 andonly ‘returned’ during World War Two inexchange for the compulsory purchaseof land elsewhere for military reasons.In the map of 1931 (below) the heavilywooded Ghyll is in marked contrast to the heath to the north of thestream – a reflection of different land use over 250 years.

November has been a good month with some fine days and a good opportunity to see the forest in Autumn . A good time for walking .

Sheep are now off the grazing area on the South Chase except for a few straggelers butyoumayencounterourownsmallerherdof Hebrideans which are being grazed in a temporary enclosure on the West Chase . So please put the family pooch on a lead when in the vicinity of sheep .

At least a thousand people gathered at the Airman’s Grave to pay their respect on Rememberance Day. Horse riders, dog walkers and families stood in silence for two minutes . The tiger moth then flew in, circled the Airman’s Grave and dropped poppies which was very moving . I should thank the pilot Nick Parkhouse, on behalf of us all who were there, for creating a memorable day and also Ranger Beal for maintaining the Airman’s Grave over the years.

On the way home that evening I saw a Hen Harrier flying low across the road at Duddleswell. A few hours earlier cars, dogs, horses and hundreds of people had packed the forest. There are only 6 nesting pairs of Hen harriersinthecountrysoitisnotablewhenwesee them on the forest and reassuring that they are still here inspite of pressure from such a large gathering earlier in the day.

The deer rut is keeping Rangers busy with deer being hit on the roads daily. The worst places locally are Crowborough Army Camp on the A26 . Pippingford Park to Wych Cross on the A22. Coleman’s Hatch Road up to Wych Cross and to Goat Cross Roads. On any woodland road stop and wait if deer are crossing . It is possible that 10 or 20 deer may cross in front of your vehicle. Please take care.

Home made paper chains are always a winner Youneednothing more than paper, scissors and glue (decorations like glitter to add to the paper as you like)

Looking after a “bird table” (anything flat and raised will do) and make them responsible for looking after the birds by topping it up regularly with bread crusts etc.

Home-made Christmas Tree Decorationsone option is to make Christmas biscuits, but before baking them pierce them well with a skewer, then after they are cooked & decorated, thread through ribbon (or even wool/thread) and hang on the Christmas trees.

Make Home-made jewellery Ingredients: 1/2 cup corn starch, 1/2 cup salt warm water. Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Add warm water gradually until the mixture forms a dough, optional: put the dough into sections and add food colouring for different colours. Before working with the dough, dust with flour to reduce stickiness. The children can shape the dough into different shaped beads. A hole can be pierced in each bead with a toothpick. Dry the beads on baking paper.

Make Fun Play Dough Ingredients: 2 parts flour, 1 part salt, 1 part water, food colouring. Mix andkneaduntilit is doughy and the colour is mixed in well. Store in a covered container.

Bolebroke Castle Henry VIII Hunting Lodge

Built in 1480 & located just north of Hartfield, Bolebroke Castle is the earliest brick-built building in Sussex. It is known that a castle existed on this site since Anglo-Saxon times and indeed a Roman road passes nearby. The architectural style of the building is unmistakably Tudor.

Although called a castle, when it was built the need for a “fortified” house had passed. However the stone mullioned windows on the ground floor were placed high above ground level so that no one couldlookintotheinteriorroomsfrom outside.

henryVIIIusedBolebrokewhenhe went hunting in the nearby Ashdown Forest for wild boar and venison.

And in one of history’s most famous love stories, Anny Boleyn, who lived at Hever Castle just five miles away, was courted by King Henry from Bolebroke. Indeed, itiswhereAnneBoleyn’sauntonce resided.

The castle has been loved and cared for through the centuries with a wealth of history. It was owned by the famous Sackvilles – the Earls & Dukes of Dorset – who, with many strong ties to this area also built nearby Sackville College in East Grinstead.

It boosts the second largest fireplace in England - the largest being at Hampton Court. And from the hall rises one of the finest Elizabethan solid oak staircases still in existence. The solid oak treads, some 9 inches thick, rise through four landings right to the roof. It seems inconceivable that in Victorian times the staircase was painted stone colour!

The whole of the interior of the castle is oak-framed and massive beams support exposed oak ceiling beams. Many original beams remain and it’s interesting to note that some of these were probably used in sailing ships before being used in the construction of the house. Due to widespread felling at one time it was forbidden to use oak trees for the construction of buildings.

The house has a commanding view over two large lakes to surrounding woodland and the Ashdown Forest can be viewed from the top floor.

It is believed the reason a settlement has always existed atBolebrokesinceearlytimesis because there was a good water supply. An old well has been found in the inner courtyardbut500yardsawayisa natural spring.

Amazingly nature seems to have followed suit with a 9 foot diameteroaktreeasoldasthehouse itself, just a few yards from the north corner of the castle. It still comes into leaf each year.

Bolebroke Castle is in private ownership and is not normally open to the public. It is,

however, a venue for wedding receptions, private dinners & birthday celebrations. Plus offers Bed & Breakfast accommodationwithahenryVIII 4 poster suite!

Preheat the oven to 180 C, Gas Mark 4, 350 FPut bicarbonate of soda, ginger and sifted flour into a bowl. Add the condensed milk and stir until it has become one with the mixture..Pour the butter, sugar and condensed milk mixture into the bowl and spoon them to-gether, then with your hands bind the mixture together until it forms a dough. This feels odd as it is warm and feels crumbly, just go with it and work quickly with the warm dough.On a floured surface roll out the dough to a thickness of 0.5cm. Have your parchment pa-per ready on the baking sheet. Cut out the biscuit rounds and place onto baking sheet.Now for the hole in the middle – you might want to experiment in size depending on the effect you want, use a knife or small round cutter to make a hole in the centre.Put the boiled sweets into the hole. Put them into the oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown.Let them cool and decorate as you wish.

Now they are ready to brighten your table, or put in a box and give as a present. Note: Gingerbread biscuits will go soft in a few days if not kept in an airtight container.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organisation with an international network of over 1.3 million men and women members in 44,000 clubs spread through 200 countries who strive to provide community service for their local communities.

Crowborough Lions Club was formed in 1974, every pound raised goes directly to a charitable cause. The time individual members give to Lions depends on their own personal circumstances and on the community service activities the club undertakes.

Crowborough Club is currently seeking new members. Membership provides opportunities for the kind of volunteer experience to suit an individual’s lifestyle as well as scope for fun and developing friendships.

The club has three primary committees: the welfare committeewhichresearchescharitablecausestakenonboardbytheclub,afundraising committee which,asthenamesuggests, endeavours to raise funds for the clubs charity account. Finally the club has a social committee to organise social events for members to partake in if they so wish.

Examples of fundraising events

are the Easter Egg Raffle, which raised over £1000 this year. A bookstall in the town on Saturday mornings where paperback books are sold.and exchanged with a similar facility at Crowborough railway station. A Darts Marathon recently completed promises to raise in excess of £2,000. The Club also supports local fetes and fairs.

The Social committee arrange a variety of events, Theatre trips, Fish & Chip supper with aQuiz,Countrywalkswithan evening supper as well as arranging a formal dinner dance to celebrate the anniversary of theClub’sFormationChartergranted in 1974.

The Club are holding a XMAS lunch for members and guests on the 12th of December.

The Club meet at Croft Road Social Club (opposite Waitrose Supermarket) on the second Tuesday of each month and would welcome visitors wishing to find out more about the Club and its activities in the community.
