STOP WINTER WATER

DAMAGE!

Testimonial:

“It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies

It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.”

Yours truly,Richard ReussIndependent Business ConsultantForest Row

Dear Residents,Welcome to the February issue.

With the day of love, Valentines Day, on our heels we’ve got a feature about it’s origins and some practical tips - see page 8.

We’re thankfully inching towards Springtime and as the garden starts to rise in the priority stakes we’ve an article about planting wild owers. There is a growing movement towards doing this, not least because of it’s assistance to nature.

Former Forest Row resident, the world famous surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe, will shortly be immortalised with a statue; see our fascinating feature where we hear from the sculptor Martin Jennings.

Thank you for any support given to our local businesses, hopefully you can nd the services/products you need here and remember, there are always new businesses coming on board.

If you have any community or local charity news/events please drop us a line any time.

Thank you for all your feedback.

All the best for a good month,

Tally & Chris

Grow Your Own Wildflower Meadow!

Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Wild ower meadows have become increasingly rare in our countryside.

More recently there is a growing movement towards bringing such meadows back to life in our own gardens not only because it gives you a slice of the beauty of the wild, it also attract a wide diversity of birds, bees, butter ies and other wildlife and this aids their survival.

Here are some practical steps to help get you started on your own meadow area:

Preparing the groundIt is desirable to clear the ground of coarse grasses and other perennials such as dandelion, docks and thistles. These can be dug up, or if a larger area, sprayed with a glysophate based weed killer - when using weedkiller please follow the instructions on the container.

Cultivate the ground by digging or rotavating. You are aiming to produce a tilth that the seed can be sown into. No fertilizer is required. The more impoverished the soil, the better. If possible, bring the sub soil to the surface burying the top soil as you go.

Sowing the seedSeed can be sown in the autumn or, especially on clay soils as the seed requires warmth and moisture, early March to May. To get an even distribution sow half the seed in one direction and the other half over the whole area again at right angles. Seed should be sown onto the surface then the area rolled using a roller. This ensures the seed has good contact with the soil. If the area is small, walking over the site is perfectly

adequate.

Seeding rates are usually 4 to 5 gms per square metre.

Wild ower areas can be more or less created anywhere in the garden. Some of the mixes available include Butter y meadow, Wetland, Shady, Late owering, early owering, Honeybee, or for a quick splash of colour try Corn eld Annual Mix.

Wild ower seed is available as purely wild ower or a mix of grasses and a percentage of wild ower seed. If you are starting a wild ower meadow from scratch choose a grass and wild ower mix.

Converting LawnsExisting Lawns can also be turned into a wild ower meadow.

To prepare you need to stop using fertliser and weedkiller and mow the lawn on a regular basis keeping the grass very short. You will need to do this for at least a year, possibly two. Scarifying the lawn will also help as this will expose patches of soil which the wild ower seed can utilise.

Maintaining your MeadowAt the end of the summer the meadow will need cutting after the wild owers have set seed. The best tool for the cutting is a strimmer.

Cut again in the SpringLeave clippings for a few days then gather up and remove so as to prevent nutrients being returned to the soil.

Love doesn’t have to cost the earth.

St ValentineWho exactly St. Valentine was is shrouded in mystery. There seems to be 3 St. Valentines connected with 14th February, 2 of which could have been the same person!

It is often believed however that ‘the’ St. Valentine was a priest from the 3rd century who lived in Rome. He had been caught marrying Christian couples in an era when early Christians were experiencing great persecution at the hands of the Romans. At that time Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns and there was di culty recruiting soldiers, so the emperor Claudius II cancelled all marriages within the City of Rome – married men were less inclined to leave their loved ones…

It is popularly believed that St. Valentine cut hearts from parchment, giving them to the soldiers, to remind them of God’s love and to encourage them to remain faithful Christians when they left for battle.

St. Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for defying the emperor’s decree. The legend unfolds that he was brought before Claudius who was impressed by him and attempted to convert him to Roman paganism. St. Valentine refused and countered this by trying to convert the Emperor to Christianity! He was thus sentenced to death.

According to tradition before his execution, while incarcerated, Valentine fell in love with a young woman who visited him. Some sources say she was the blind daughter (possibly named Julia) of his jailer Asterius. He is reported to have performed a miracle by giving her back her sight. His farewell message to his love Julia contained the now timeless closing: “From Your Valentine.” The saint was executed on February 14 in around 270 A.D., Julia and her extended family of forty-six people became Christians soon after. His legend was cemented therefore for all the future generations of ‘loved ones’ to be inspired by.

Sir Archilbald MacIndoe, former Forest Row resident, was a world famous surgeon whose pioneering work in the eld of plastic surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital literally gave the life back to many horri cally burnt servicemen of WW II.

Martin Jennings (pictured on the left) was approached by Jacquie Pinney of the Blond McIndoe Foundation to

sculpt the statue of McIndoe for our town. With well-known and much- admired statues such as the one of John Betjeman at St. Pancras Station to his name, Martin seemed an obvious choice for the commission. At the time of asking, unknown to Jacquie a personal and poignant connection was yet to unfold. Here we nd out more from Martin himself:

What was your response when you were asked to sculpt McIndoe?

Astonishment and delight. Sir Archibald McIndoe played an

important role in my family history. My own father, Michael Jennings, was very badly burned as a young man in the Second World War. He was discovered bandaged up in Birmingham hospital when McIndoe was making one of his country-wide searches for patients and was brought back to East Grinstead.

How did you come to know about McIndoe?

My father mentioned him often enough for us to know how much he admired him. He felt indebted and grateful to McIndoe for what he had done for him. After some di cult years of treatment and recuperation my father had married and went on to become a successful headmaster with many children.

When my father turned 80, he could hardly believe he’d lived so long. McIndoe had warned his patients that they might not have long lives after their terrible injuries but many did nonetheless. My father was not an airman and so could not be a member of the Guinea Pig Club (formed from McIndoe’s RAF patients) but many Guinea Pigs bene tted greatly from the mutual support o ered by the club.

Tell us what happened when you visited the Queen Vic?

Remarkably my father’s medical le was still in the hospital archive. I found pictures of him as a 23 year old before and after his treatment. It was a very moving experience and it was painful to see how injured he’d been. When I showed the pictures to my son he said “so that’s where I got my curly dark hair!” – by the time my father allowed more photos to be taken of him, many years after he was burned, that hair had gone so we’d never seen it before.

What do you think the statue of McIndoe will do for the town?

It will not only be a statue of the great man himself but a tribute to the men of the Guinea Pig Club as well. And I hope to be able to emphasise the way in which, during the war, the people of the East Grinstead area helped to rehabilitate those severely

dis gured young men, by so openly welcoming them into the community. So perhaps this will be an unusual statue – a tribute not only to a single individual but to all those people as well, who should be very proud of what they did for those servicemen back in the 1940s.

The statue is to be funded entirely by public donations and

gifts are welcome big or small so anyone can feel a part of this amazing project. Donations can be made by cheque payable to McIndoe Memorial Account and sent to Mrs J Pinney, The Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, Queen Victoria Hospital, Holtye Road, E. Grinstead, W. Sx, RH19 3DZ or through Justgiving on the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation Site.

Standen is the National Trust’s Arts and Crafts Movement gem just north of the Ashdown Forest. It was built for the wealthy Beale family at the end of the nineteenth century.

James Beale was a prosperous London solicitor. He chose as his architect one of William Morris’s closest friends and colleagues, Phillip Webb. Webb built little because he built with such care. Indeed Standen is the nest surviving example of his architectural work and a testament to his love of craftsmanship and the use of vernacular materials.

Webb carefully preserved the existing old buildings on site and made them the main starting point for his new house. Standen is built from sandstone quarried from the garden, local bricks and tiles, and features oak weatherboarding and a rendered water tower giving sweeping views over the Medway Valley.

It is the Morris interiors for which Standen is now best known and

throughout the house are some of his most famous designs in wallpapers, textiles and carpets. At the forefront of the Arts and Crafts Movement William Morris and his like-minded contemporaries designed with the ideals of beauty, simplicity and utility very much in mind.

Standen was, of course, home to James, Margaret and their seven children from 1894 until 1901, when the children began marrying and moving away to set up their own homes. For the next 70 years, however, Standen remained the focus of family life to which the younger Beales’

brought their own burgeoning families (nineteen grandchildren in all!) for summer holidays and Christmas.

When Margaret Beale died in 1936 at the age of 89, she left her spinster daughters Maggie and Helen to look after Standen. The two sisters devoted much of their time to local good works; Maggie founded a home for the mentally ill in Ashdown Forest and Helen was appointed vice-chairman of the newly enlarged Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. During the war years, in association with the now famous hospital, Standen took in many of it’s patients. It was also a sanctuary for those Beale family members bombed out of their London homes and a storeroom for their valued possessions. Standen’s beautiful gardens were turned into a huge vegetable patch.

Standen remained in Beale family ownership until it was taken on by the National Trust in 1972.

Although best known for the house and its collection, the gardens have always played a crucial part in the enjoyment of Standen, both when a family home, and for the public who

A croquet and tennis lawn was created in the garden for the Beales by their landscape designer, George Simpson. This photo from the early 1900s shows James and his daughter Dorothy (left of the net) teaming up in a game of doubles.

now visit. However, over the last 40 years much of the unique style and structure of the garden has been lost with its planting and layout simpli ed to reduce maintenance costs. Now with recent funding of £500,000 the gardens will be restored to their former glory over the next ve years, placing them rmly as one of the most important Arts and Crafts gardens in the country alongside more well known places such as Sissinghurst. The restoration of the garden will put back the vision of its creator, Margaret Beale. A great collector of plants, Margaret created a unique garden blending an exotic and colourful planting scheme within a

loose Arts and Crafts structure.

Now enjoyed by over 90,000 visitors a year, it is a huge e ort to keep Standen open to the public. A fairly modest team of sta is supported by over 300 volunteers who get involved in every aspect of running the property. With major projects getting underway and an increase in opening hours this year Standen is now on the look out for new volunteers to join their friendly team. From behind the scenes work, to visitor services, gardening and tour guiding there’s many di erent opportunities available. “I love to be able to give my

time to other people and in such wonderful surroundings,” says Keith Hodgson, Room Guide and Garden Tour Guide Volunteer.

Standen wants to hear from you if you are passionate about heritage and conservation. To nd out more, please email Bleau Hudson at [email protected] or call 01342 323029.

Disguise Vegetables!Chop broccoli into tiny tiny pieces and throw a couple of handfuls into the Bolognese or lasagne...

mums the Word...

A Sweat Treat & Healthy! (minus all that sugar)

Blend berries, kiwi, etc. or whatever you choose plus bananas into a good mixture (or use a pre-made smoothie if you’re short on time) and put into ice-lolly making kit, and into the freezer. A perfect ‘treat’ for kids without all the junk, and 1 of their 5 a day!

Pocket Money? To Give or Not to Give that is the question.

It’s always di cult to know how much to give especially when the kids are getting so much anyway! Every family will have their own system. A friend swears by this method: Every chore done around the house/garden is rewarded with money, not lots but enough for them to make the e ort and build it up the kitty. On the ip side if nothing is done, there is no pocket money and cleaning their own room doesn’t count as a chore. So really it’s all down to them as to how much they get at the end of the week...

A Mothers Quote of the month: Sir Archibald McIndoe’s mother

(see our other article) always stressed to him that:

“you can make whatever you like of your life when the time comes,

but the preparations for it you must make now” Mabel McIndoe

Screens v. Real-lifeIn our never-ending search to nd alternatives to screens here is a suggestion:

Kids demanding to play hours on the DS or Wii? Get them to make yummy pancakes instead! They are so easy to make, ingredients are simple (2 eggs, 100mg plain our, 300 ml milk) and the kids love them and we love them too! So it’s a win-win. Given a bit of guidance, trust and con dence they will be cooking them in no time.*

*We feel we ought to say that allowing a child to use a frying pan may not be suitable for all families or for all ages. Some children may need to be supervised (certainly at the beginning) so please use common sense.

Kedgeree with a kick

What to do:1. Cook the rice in boiling water for 12 minutes, until

tender. At the same time, hard-boil the eggs for 10

minutes.

2. Put the chunks of sh into a large frying pan and add a

little water. Heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the sh

is opaque. Drain.

3. Shell the eggs and quarter them. Drain the rice and

add it to the sh with the curry powder, peas and parsley.

Heat, stirring gently, for 2-3 minutes. Season with black

pepper and serve, topped with the eggs.

Tip 1: Look out for ready-prepared plain sh pie mix

from the fresh sh counter - also sold pre-packed.

Tip 2: Use mild curry powder, or none at all, if you’re not

keen on spicy avours.

Tip 3: Another time, use frozen mixed vegetables

instead of peas.

To the south of Ashdown Forest is the village of Scaynes Hill. We thought you might nd some of its history of local interest:

Scaynes Hill has a long history. Originally named Hen eld, it formed part of a scattered estate that, in 765 A.D., was given by the last South Saxon King to the monks of St Michael.

The Domesday Book is, of course, the great land survey from 1086. In the survey, Norman Lords held the ‘Rapes’ into which Sussex was divided – each Rape being subsequently divided into ‘Hundreds’. Scaynes Hill was situated in the Rape of Lewes and the Hundred of Streat. At the accession of Henry I in 1100 William de Warenne held the Rape of Lewes. Incidentally, he was one of the very few proven ‘Companions’ of William the Conqueror, and known to have fought at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Subsequently he became a great landowner in England.

It is from this background that the village’s local history is formed, and, in the following centuries, there came the establishment of the grand properties of the district, and names such as Massetts, Bedales, and Sennotts can be seen on old maps. The village was not of the size it is today, but was nonetheless situated between the historical

and well established settlements of Lind eld, Fletching and Chailey.

The name Scaynes Hill has had variations over the years, Skerns in 1586, Skaynes in 1588, Scarnes, Skermes, Skirns, Skeines, and others. Originally known as ‘Hean eld (or Heanfelde) Common’ - the old English ‘hean’ meaning high. In the collection accounts of the infamous ‘Window Tax’ in 1747 it is also described as ‘Scarmes Hill’.

Geographically the ridge that starts at Scaynes Hill is the most southerly ridge before entering the low lying country to the foot of the Downs south of the village. Records show that a promontory fort existed here known as the ‘Southern Fort’; as opposed to the ‘Northern Fort’ which existed six miles to the north at West Hoathly.

There was a Chapel, dedicated to St Peter, that was built or rebuilt about 1100 A.D. by the Third Earl De Warenne. The site of the Chapel was probably on a small plot which now bears the name ‘Chapel Plat’.

Scaynes Hill really grew up in the nineteenth century around the junction at the main East/West through road which to this day provides an important long distance route across the county. At the corner where St Augustine’s House is built, was a tollgate.

Moving towards the more recent history the village Sign, erected in honour of the Silver Jubilee depicts an anchor, a builder’s trowel, a wood saw and a bunch of grapes. The pub, now the ‘Inn on the Green’, built in 1751, was formerly known as the ‘Anchor’ relating to the hill by which it stands; it is thought that the term ‘Anchor’ comes from the method, in days gone by, when heavy loads were on the hill, an ‘anchor point’ was provided using ropes for assistance. There was a working village quarry at Anchor Hill (last working in 1913) and yellow sandstone was taken to build the stunning Lancing College.

The wood saw represents the now defunct rm of Lewes Road Sawmills, formerly of Church Road, and the builder’s trowel signi es the old village building rm of F Dale and Co. Lastly the grapes signify the small vineyard at Rock Lodge also at Anchor Hill which thankfully is still very much in existence and produces local wine to this day!

By Local Resident William Coleman

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back.

Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”.

She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, fl ooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her

kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Rachael can design a kitchen that fi ts you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality.
