During her time at KU, Ashley participated in the design and physical construction of a variety of proj-ects, most notably the new University Center for Design Research for Kansas University.

After graduating in May 2011, Ashley relocated to New Orleans, where she has since continued to pursue intrests in design, community devel-opment, and construction. Ashley is currently pursuing her architectural liscence working as a project manager with a local Engineering firm.

The Center for Design Rsearcbuilding, located on the historic Chamney Dairy Farm in Lawrence, Kasas was commissioned by the Unviesity of Kasas De-sign Dsign Department and was designed and built in 2011 by the members of Studio 804_11. This facility’s design is a response to the emerg-ing culture and support of sustainability at the University of Kansas. This new building implements sustainable strate-gies to maximize the potential of existing resources, minimize environmental degradation, create an en-vironment that is safe, comfortable and efficient and provide an iconic representation of sustainability for the University of Kansas. The building will provide a space for professional collaboration and community education while displaying a wide range of sustainable strategies. The Center for Design Re-search is projected to be Studio 804’s fourth LEED Platinum Building, as well as the first Commercial Certified Passive building in North America. More information about the Center for Design Research and Studio 804 can be found at www.studio804.com.

“This building is important in both its purpose as a design innovation incubator for KU and as a reginal model for demonstration of the state of the art in sustainable design and construction. It is sensibly placed in a three-building complex with century-old farm

buildings that are now further enhanced by virtue of that placement, the building’s appropriate scale, and a remarkable aesthetic compatibility achieved by its desigers.”

-John Gaunt, Dean, University of Kansas Schoolf of Architecture, Design and Planning

As the suburban condition becomes less and less economically and sustainably viable, focus is turning towards the revitalization of the long-neglecte urban fabric. At the core of this transision is the issue of urban food production. The Center for Sustainable Living and Urban Argriculture is a speculative design project, sited on the south side of Chicago, aimed at exploring this issue. The program of this building attempts to both promote healthy lifestyles by re-enforcing the concept of re-use, reduce, and recycle and acknowledge the emerging importance of uban agriculture by empowering neighborhood residents to produce and prcess their own food. The design for this building visually represents this cycle by maximizing visal access to near-ly all of the Center’s programatic fuctions: a greenhouse, grocery store, restaurant and diing hall, teaching kitchen, and recycling facilities. The sustainable features of the building include a water-reclaimation system, pasive ventilation strategies and maximized southern exposure.

The Prairie Overlook Deck was commissioned by the University of Kansas Field Station and Ecological Reserves (KSR) a division of the Kansas Biological Survey and design and built in one semester by 15 third-year architecture students from Kansas University. Situated on the edge of the Rockefeller Prairie north of Lawrence, the trailhead serves a public outreach function, inviting the public to enjoy the lands of the KU Field Station and gain an understanding of the work being done there as KU and visiting scientists re-search plant and animal populations on the prairie.

The Overlook Deck was conceived as a pre-fabricated structure, and was built of galvanized steel tubes and wood in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning’s west campus warehouse, then transported to the prairie for installation. It consists of a suspended deck and an undulating bench structure, which emulates the waving prarie grass of the nature preserve.
