Economic and political reformation

through the Renewable Energy

strategy and Energy Efficiency savings.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is famed for its natural

beauty and rich, diverse cultures. Home to 60 million

people from over 100 ethnic nationality groups, Myanmar

is rich in natural resources, including vast oil and gas

reserves, a variety of metals and minerals, precious

gems, and lush rivers and forests. Along the banks of the

country’s many rivers - the Irrawaddy, and the Mekong --

and throughout the country many indigenous peoples and

ethnic nationality groups continue to rely on land and

natural resource-based livelihoods.

“Electricity demand projected to increase 700% between

2012 and 2030.”

According to a recent report by the World Bank, Myanmar’s economy is growing at around eight per cent a year. The country's government is seeking to mobilise foreign investment in its energy sector in the wake of the relaxation of trade embargoes that accompanied recent political reforms by the ruling junta.

Large solar power generation projects are increasingly taking root in Myanmar as the government races to alleviate a serious electricity shortage and reduce the country's dependence on hydropower.

With electricity demand projected to increase 700% between 2012 and 2030, the government is racing to develop power generation facilities to keep up with the expansion.

The World Bank Group is committed to Myanmar’s energy development and announced in January 2014 that they will provide $1 billion in nancial support to expand electricity generation, transmission and distribution in the country.

As part of this effort, the World Bank Group and its partners are working closely with Myanmar’s government to develop

and implement a National Electrication Plan. The goal: universal electricity access by the year 2030. Approximately 7.2 million new household electricity connections will be required by 2030. To achieve this will require an average of 450,000 new connections per year – more than double the current rate of expansion.

Myanmar is a rapidly growing country with rich natural resources and strategically located between East and South Asia. The second series of Renewable Energy and Energy Efciency Myanmar 2016 will be the platform for all industry players to share and bring in the best practices and solutions to Myanmar
