ASM Upgrade On LINUXASM Upgrade On LINUX

The ASM upgrade steps described in this document can be used for the next upgrade paths:

a) ASM upgrade from 10.1.0.X release to 10.2.0.X release.

b) ASM upgrade from 10.1.0.X release to 11.1.0.X release.

c) ASM upgrade from 10.1.0.X release to 11.2.0.X release.

d) ASM upgrade from 10.2.0.X release to 11.1.0.X release.

e) ASM upgrade from 10.2.0.X release to 11.2.0.X release.

f) ASM upgrade from 11.1.0.X release to 11.2.0.X release.

In order to upgrade CSS & ASM instance to 10.2 or 11g release the next steps needs to be accomplished:

1) Install the Oracle Server 10.2 or 11g.

2) Shutdown all the database instances that are using ASM as storage option.

3) Shutdown the ASM instance.

4) Oracle cluster Synchronization Services (CSS) needs to be upgraded as follow:

Connect as root user and execute:

$ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig reset

Where: $ORACLE_HOME is your new ASM Oracle Home.

5) Startup the ASM instance (connected as Oracle OS user) as usual (using the old ASM Oracle Home e.g. 10.1.0.5).

6) From another graphical session, set the environment variables(ORACLE_HOME, PATH, etc.) pointing to your new ASM Oracle Home (e.g. 11.1.0.6).

7) Execute the DBUA from the new 10.2 or 11g ASM Oracle Home:

$ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbua

Where: $ORACLE_HOME is the new ASM Oracle Home

8) DBUA will show 2 options:

=)> upgrade a database

=)> upgrade ASM instance.

9) Select [upgrade ASM instance] option. The DBUA will upgrade your ASM instance to the latest release automatically.

10) Finally, please startup the databases that are using ASM as storage option.

Note: The databases will not be affected with the ASM upgrade. The databases will remain in the original release since they do not share the same Oracle Home.
