AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM INFORMATIONMorning Care: The ASP program provides care for students prior to school’s start beginning at 7:30 am at no cost. Although pre-registration is not required, we do ask that parents escort students to the After-School Room and check them in for safety.

Kinder Corner: 2:00 pm - 3:20 pmKindergarten students are welcomed to the program beginning at 2:00 pm, while waiting for a sibling’s dismissal or simply enjoying additional unscripted free time with friends. Kindergarten students are asked to pack an additional snack and will be encouraged to eat leftover lunch items. Parents can make arrangements through Mrs. Helmgren to have students exiting the program at 3:20 walked up to Lincoln Avenue for pick-up. Students remaining in ASP past 3:20 must enroll in one of the ASP plans. Siblings and/or parents may also come to retrieve kindergarten students from the program by properly signing them out with a counselor.

Kindergarten-5th Grade: 3:20 pm - 6:00 pmStudents will be greeted and checked into ASP by qualified counselors, then led through age appropriate activities with intermittent supervised play and/or attend ASP classes until picked up by a parent no later than 6pm. Students participating in ASP Enrichment classes must be signed in and out of ASP for safety reasons, but will not be charged for time spent in classes. All students remaining on campus after 3:45 will automatically be signed into ASP and be charged accordingly.

Middle School:Middle School students must sign into ASP in Mrs. Peter’s office by 3:45 p.m. Students may then get a snack from the Jayhawk Cafe and/or gather materials for supervised study hall. Students must check into the Read Library by 4:00 pm. Students will remain in the library until 4:45 pm when they will break for a snack in Room 101. All Middle School students in attendance will be expected to work quietly in study hall and must come prepared. No middle school students may remain on campus unattended after 3:45 pm. Students who have not been picked up by 3:45 will automatically be signed into ASP and will be charged accordingly.

Snack: We’ll provide a nutritious snack for students daily at 4:30 pm, which is included in the outlined fees. Kindergarten students are asked to pack an additional snack and will be encouraged to eat leftover lunch items. All students are welcomed and encouraged to bring additional snacks!

Sign-Out: A counselor will be stationed right inside the gatehouse doors on Lincoln Avenue to receive parents, sign-out and call students to meet their parents at the gatehouse on Lincoln Avenue. We ask that no parents call the program directly in advance to have their students sent to Lincoln Avenue. Please plan accordingly. ASP closes promptly at 6:00 pm. Students remaining on campus after 6:00 pm will be charged $5 for the first minute and $1 per minute thereafter. There is a ten minute grace period for parents picking up students after an enrichment class prior to drop-in billing enforcement.

Costs: All-INclusive Plan: $3100 = $4.70 per hour for families needing full time care.Includes teacher workdays, vacation camps and discounted Enrichment Class rates.Year Long Unlimited Use Plan: $2620 = $6.00 per hour for families needing full time careIncludes teacher workdays and discounted enrichment class rates. Year Long 5:00 Pick-Up Plan: $1975 = $7.55 per hour for families needing care until 5:00 pm.1 Hour Rate: $10.50 per hour, for families needing care after Enrichment Classes or occasional drop-inDaily Drop-In Plan: $28 per day for occasional use over one hour per day.

Beginning Band : Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:30-4:15, Grades 3-6 New Students

Intermediate Band: Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:15-5:00, Grades 4-6 Returning Students

Band is a wonderful opportunity for students to bond with classmates, meet new friends, develop personal discipline, build self esteem, and begin the practice of an art form that will deliver joy and satisfaction from their school days to beyond. Beginning Band is for students with little to no experience, while intermediate students will have completed at least one full year in band. The band performs at Lower School Assemblies and takes a field trip to a local school or retirement community in May. The school has a limited number of instruments to loan to families. There are also several local companies to rent instruments from at a reasonable cost. Students do not have to choose an instrument prior to bands’ start, where they’ll be given the opportunity to explore the instruments before making a decision. Requests for instrument loans should be directed to [email protected].

About our Director Nzingah hails from New York State's Hudson River Valley. She studied at Harlem's Jazzmobile with the Basie alumnae: Frank Foster, Frank Wess and Bill Baron. She also studied at Carl Berger' Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY, Berkeley School of Music in Boston and at Rutger's University where she received her BA in Music.  In 2000 Nzingah received her Orff Certification from Mills College.   Since relocating to CA, Nzingah has worked with a variety of ensembles including the Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra, Azucar y Crema (a women's salsa band), the Junius Courtney Big Band and in 2008 was a featured artist for the annual concert series, Afro Solo.More recently she has performed with R&B legend, Johnny Tolbert; vocalist, Denise Perrier and violinist, Sandi Poindexter.  In addition to leading her own jazz quintet, Nzingah currently performs with the Latin Jazz ensemble, Azucar con Ache, and the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music Orchestra and Count Basie Tribute Band.  A dedicated music educator, Nzingah teaches private lessons, general music, woodwinds and band.  She has taught at a number of public and private schools including The San Francisco School, the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music, Elmhurst Community Prep, Alliance Academy, Lick-Wilmerding High School and San Pedro Elementary School.

PIANO WITH KARIN MCPHAILKarin McPhail studied at Julliard School of Music and has taught at Head-Royce for over 30 years. She has a passion for helping students transform classical training into a love of music that enhances their lives. Days of Week: Monday-Thursday 3:30-6:00

PIANO WITH SARAH NOLLOur beloved Lower School Music Teacher returns to sharing her love of piano instruction with our students.Days of Week: Tuesdays 3:30-5:30, Thursdays 4:30-5:30

CLARINET WITH MICHAEL WIRGLERMichael is retired from the Oakland Public School District where he had a successful 33 year teacher career. He is the conductor for the Golden Gate Park Band and Alameda Community Band. He holds both an BA and MA in music from San Francisco State University. Days of Week: Tuesday, Thursday 3:30-5:30

TRUMPETWITH HENRY HUNGHenry has a Bachelors of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, New York City where he studied trumpet. An accomplished teacher in several Bay Area schools, Henry also has a vibrant passion for performance where he has made a name for himself as a talented player. Days of Week: Thurs. 3:30-5:30

GUITARWITH BILL SWARTZBill is a guitarist and music instructor who’s been teaching at Head-Royce for over 15 years and a professional musician for 40 plus years. Highlights of his career include playing with Tom Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater and The Swing Fever Band.Days of Week: Wednesday & Thursday 3:30-5:30

FLUTEWITH JANE MAGIDJane has been teaching at Head-Royce since the fall of 1989 and has a degree in flute performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Jane also teaches band, chamber music and has a private home studio for her students. Days of Week: Tuesday, Thursday 3:30-5:30

VIOLIN WITH STEPH NGAmong others, Stephanie is a member of the “Freeway Philharmonic”. Upon graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Music, Stephanie was granted a scholarship which she used to study in London with Paul Silverthorne of the Royal Academy of Music and London Symphony Orchestra. She holds an M.M. in Performance from San Francisco State University. Days of Week: Wednesday, 3:30-5:30

PIANO WITH YOUNG CHOELiz (Young) Choe has earned a BM degree in Music Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and an MM from Northwestern University. She has performed with many orchestras and performed chamber music throughout the states. She has won numerous awards, including a Young Musician Foundation, Fremont Young Artist Concerto competition, SCMF (Southern California Music Festival) Korea times music competition and Burlingame solo music competition. She has also studied at music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Julius Baker master class. Days of Week: Tuesdays 3:30-5:30, Thursdays 4:30-5:30

TROMBONEWITH MARA FOXMara has been teaching for over 15 years and has traveled internationally as a performer. Mara has also successfully established our Summer Program Jazz Improvisation course for local Middle School students. Days of Week: Tuesday 3:30-5:30

ASP PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONSLessons are available to students in 1st grade and above as a full year commitment. Teachers will provide thirty-minute individual lessons once a week for $38.00 per lesson, billed by trimester. Please consider your student’s schedule carefully before committing to lessons. Absences for a scheduled school related conflict (for example, sports) will not charged, but all other absences will be charged for teacher’s time. Students needing to cancel lessons indefinitely will be required to pay for lessons unless a replacement can be scheduled.After School Music Lessons will take place from 3:30-5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday, and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Childcare prior to lessons is free for Lower School and Middle School students enrolled in an ASP plan. For students not enrolled in an ASP plan, a $2 per lesson fee will be added and care after the lessons will be billed at the regular rates. All Lower and Middle school students remaining on campus prior tolessons must sign into the After School Program before their lessons and must be signed out properly.Lower school students signing into ASP will be sent to lesson by ASP staff to ensure a timely arrival.PLEASE NOTE, If you are interested in registering for lessons, but the teacher’s below availability does not match yours, please send a request as there are often alternate possibilities. If you are interested in an instrument not listed, please contact us, as we may be able to accommodate your needs.

ASP CAMPS The ASP Camp program is open to all school-

age students, regardless of enrollment at Head-

Royce. Camp days are full of a variety of activities as well as workshops from our

enrichment programs. Camp is available from

7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is charged at a rate

of $65 per day or $225 per week. Camp

registration must be completed one week prior to the camp date to ensure adequate

enrollment. A minimum of 15 students is

required per camp. Registrations are non-

refundable as staffing is dictated by enrollment.

C a m p e r s a r e w e l c o m e t o b r i n g “wheels” (excluding bicycles), but must also

provide helmets and protective gear. Campers

may also bring Wii games and equipment to

share. Campers must bring a sack lunch,

afternoon snack is provided. Camp agendas will be sent to registered families prior to camps’

start.

BILLINGAll ASP charges will be added to your student’s account. Classes are billed on a trimester basis. Students not enrolled in an ASP plan remaining in ASP care after a class will be charged at a rate of $10.50 for the first hour. Students staying in ASP longer than one hour will be billed the daily drop-in rate of $28. There is no ASP drop-in charge prior to enrichment classes.

SIGN-IN/OUT PROCEDURESAll students registered for an ASP class must sign-in to the program upon dismissal. ASP Enrichment teachers will come to ASP to collect students after they have been properly signed in. Parents can follow the general ASP pick-up guidelines to pick up their students.

REGISTRATIONRegistration can be completed by turning in the form or by the preferred method of email. Once forms are turned in, registration is considered complete, you will NOT hear back unless enrollment is not met. Classes have limited enrollment. In the event that a class you’ve signed up for is full, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list. Early registration is recommended! Space permitting, students will be allowed to join a class in progress, but no proration will be granted.

ENROLLMENTClasses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are subject to cancellation if a minimum enrollment of six students per class is not met. Unless noted, enrollment is for an entire year. It is not necessary to re-register for the same classes at the trimester break. Please note, you must let us know if you are canceling enrollment at the trimester’s end. Students automatically re-enroll unless we have notice in writing (email).

CHANGES/CANCELLATIONSWe ask that you make your selections carefully as staffing and enrollment goals are affected by changes. All changes must be made in writing (by email). Changes will be subject to a $15 processing fee and will be made on a space-available basis. Once the class is underway, no refunds will be issued. At the discretion of the director, a credit toward another class may be issued.

KINDER ART EXPLORATIONStudents will explore the world of art with various art materials and techniques to make beautiful creations. Studying the art methods, palettes and techniques of arts and crafts helps students understand and appreciate the foundations of art. Colors, forms and shape are emphasized. Discover your talent and stretch your skills! Samples of projects will include: Acrylic paint on canvas, clay sculpture, puppet making, bookmaking and more! ART WITH THE MASTERSStudents will learn art through the emulation of the Masters! Art designs will be colorful, exciting and fun! Having returned from a recent trip to Venice, Jenai has a number of Venetian Masques to study and reproduce. Degas’ ballerinas are models of evocative art: simple, yet moving. Roualt’s Stained Glass style of painting reflects the German Expressionism of the early Twentieth Century. These are various sample projects which will expand your student’s understanding of art! Emphasis will be on historical understanding, technique and proper use of materials! TAEKWONDO MON. & WED.Class meets twice a week! Instructor Han Jiwhan is a former member of the Korean National Judo team and an Olympian who competed at the 2000 Sydney Games. His amazing balance of discipline and gentle instruction makes this class an ASP favorite. Instruction will focus on respect, determination, self-discipline and meditation. All students will need a uniform, orange belts and above will need protective sparring gear. CHESSChess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily. Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science and math and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. KIDS’ CARPENTRYThe foundation of the class is safe and proper use of hand woodworking tools. A benefit to carpentry is the lessons in applied mathematics. Project options are boats, trucks, bird feeders, clocks and more. KINDER SOCCER CLINIC-BOYSJoin Coach John Miottel for a weekly introduction to soccer for kindergarten students.  Students will get a fun, action packed introduction to the game of soccer including basic skills such as kicking, dribbling and controlling the ball.  All of the activities will be developmentally appropriate with an emphasis on fun and learning to love soccer.   John Miottel, father of Annatie and Woody, has been coaching soccer for 30 years at all age levels.  John is the Assistant Director of the Mersey Soccer Club in Berkeley (a club he helped create in 1984.)  John has a Masters in Education and has taught at all school levels locally and on the east coast.  John holds an Advanced Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association and still plays competitively in the East Bay Senior Soccer League and in Marin County.Grades: KindergartenTime: 2:15-3:00Taught By: John MiottelRate for ASP Plan Users: $175Cost: $195

MUSICAL THEATER IMAGINATION TROUPECan’t decide between music, dance, art and theater? No Need! The Musical Theater Troupe invites young performers to creatively collaborate and express themselves through art, singing, dance and acting as they prepare for a full scale musical production. Class will focus on character development, blocking, prop development, costume creation and much more! The class is taught by beloved teacher, Ms. Miranda, a Yale graduate who earned a degree in Theatre-Performance. After graduating, she toured the world with Yale’s all female A capella group and then moved to New York. Currently she is working on her own recording project, “Jazz Musical” with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, featuring his band Ratdog. ROBOTICSLearn about buidling and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms system. In addition to having fun, participants learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Working in small groups, students will complete several projects and mini challenges through which they will learn how to control the robot to avoid obstacles, pick up and carry objects. Projects are structured to allow students to work in an open-ended investigative environment while having fun. Enrollment is limited. MARIMBA MADNESS Experience the invigorating sound of marimba music, while working on coordination and rhythm. This joyous and upbeat class is taught by Ronnie Daliyo, visiting artist from Zimbabwe. Ronnie is a member of the Mhembero music and dance group from Harare and is here with the Chinyakare ensemble from Oakland. MATH GAMES FOR GIRLS! We just want to have fun playing a variety of games and reinforcing math along the way! Most card games and board games already use logic, reasoning and strategy. We adapt games to give them more of a mathematical element. For example, we might change Checkers so that a player is required to do a quick addition problem every time she makes a move. We’re excited to offer a girls only edition of this great class to allow students to compete, cooperate and practice math. WEST AFRICAN FUSION DANCEInstructor Kim Agnew is a multi-disciplined dancer, choreographer and dance educator teaching throughout the greater Bay Area, including outreach with the San Francisco and Marin Ballets. Kim brings over 15 years of specialized study of West African dance and music. Her passion is passing on the many teachings of her mentors. The class will explore the specific community dances, basic technique and music from all over Africa. ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALSStudents take on real-life engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical and structural engineering with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO material. SWIM LESSONSThe Head-Royce after school swim lesson instructors have taught in our Summer Enrichment Program and are both WSI certified swim lesson instructors. The Red Cross swim lesson program guidelines frame the program. You may choose either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday lessons for three week sessions, totaling 6 lessons per session. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length. Students may leave swim gear at school for the duration of the lessons. The ASP Staff will supervise changing into swim clothes as well as prompt arrival to lessons. Parents are always welcome to observe! STEEL DRUMSSteel drums were developed on the island of Trinidad and are known for their sweet, melodic sound. Playing the steel drums or “pan” provide an excellent vehicle for learning musical timing, hand-eye coordination and teamwork by combining rhythm skills with melody and harmony in a small group. KINDER SOCCER CLINIC-GIRLSJoin Coach John Miottel for a weekly introduction to soccer for kindergarten students.  Students will get a fun, action packed introduction to the game of soccer including basic skills such as kicking, dribbling and controlling the ball.  All of the activities will be developmentally appropriate with an emphasis on fun and learning to love soccer.   John Miottel, father of Annatie and Woody, has been coaching soccer for 30 years at all age levels.  John is the Assistant Director of the Mersey Soccer Club in Berkeley (a club he helped create in 1984.)  John has a Masters in Education and has taught at all school levels locally and on the east coast.  John holds an Advanced Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association and still plays competitively in the East Bay Senior Soccer League and in Marin County.Grades: KindergartenTime: 2:15-3:00Taught By: John MiottelRate for ASP Plan Users: $175Cost: $195
